In 2023, the world was blessed with two fantastic remakes. Nintendo's Super Mario RPG remake left the original game almost entirely intact while giving the presentation a thoroughly modern coat of paint, while Capcom's Resident Evil 4 remake rebuilt its predecessor from the ground up to suit today's sensibilities. And somehow, both approaches were entirely successful and vaild! On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey,  Maddie Copp, Gary Butterfield, and Kole Ross (of Duckfeed.tv) as the crew celebrates the fact that everything old is new and also $59.99 again.

Geno has a cool design, but it's great to see everyone who was foaming at the mouth to get him in Smash Bros for 20-odd years receive definitive consensus that Mallow was always the superior companion. I'm kidding. Put them both in. Put Fat Worm of Blows a Sparky fame in Smash Bros.

First of all, it's totally awesome to have Gary and Kole on the same episode! And second, speaking of modern remakes, it's genuinely heartbreaking that the just-released Game Center CX 1+2 Replay in Japan (aka Retro Game Challenge) looks to have no English translation on the horizon. I'm still at work so I haven't listened to this episode to see if GCCX is mentioned in it, but I felt obligated to comment especially after GCCX and it's lack of translation plans was mentioned in the Retro Re-release Roundup post on the main Retronauts site. And to continue raising awareness in hopes to eventually kick up enough dust for Bandai-Namco to change their minds!

I asked Maddie in her stream today when she would be on Retronauts next and here she is!

I have the most nostalgia for SNES, but never did play Super Mario RPG. I think I would like to experience the original for the classic look and feel. I recently played Donkey Kong Country 2, for the first time, and loved it.

my favorite remake leon line is during the krauser fight when he goes: *snort* “congratulations on your new faith.” 😏

I thought the presence of the analog stick helped the platforming in the Mario RPG remake. It was much easier to do the diagonal jumping on the beanstalk which was a relief. The stick also made breaking into the Marrymore chapel so much easier which was the point I got stuck at for the longest time as a kid.

A little off topic, but there were whispers of a Dark Souls 2 episode here, and buddy, I am here for it

There's a short documentary on game development that talks to some of the Resident Evil 4 team. Even a month out from release the game was riddled with bugs to the point they were afraid it would be delayed. I'm sure they pulled it off with no crunch whatsoever. /sarcasm https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/ondemand/video/5001412/
