Happy Feature Friday Y'all!!! (and happy belated May the Fourth!)

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this movie! Did you love it? Hate it? I definitely found it entertaining, but noticed some problems as well. Either way, I had fun and am looking forward to the final film in this trilogy.

You may have missed releasing it on May the Fourth but it's in time for Revenge of the Sixth.

Rose Tico is the single best character of all time.

Matthew s

I personally think this is the best of the sequel trilogy, but I’m more into the prequels and originals. Clarification: the planet at the end has red soil covered with salt. It is not the wintery planet from Empire Strikes Back.

Kristine Friling

I am an outlier in all of this. I actually really enjoyed all of them. I enjoy all Star Wars content. Do I put expectations on all of it? No. I just want to be entertained. And I was. I have to usually try to enjoy these in a vacuum because there are many people who like to nit pick and point out everything they consider a flaw. (Not saying there aren't any, just that it was not a game changer for me) People only pointing out what they think is negative, lessens my viewing experience. I like to have unspoiled views going in so I can form my own opinion. I still get excited about the universe and love that we are getting more. So I always say, make your own opinion. Don't let others mar your viewing experience. :)

Philip Davetas

Oh my goodness. I will actually watch the full length version of this. Because there's no way I'll watch this on my own. Too scary.

Dooly

I remember walking out of the theatre just utterly confused. I was in disbelief that this is what Star Wars ended up as. Sure, Rose Tico, single best character of all time, the savior of mankind and all, but not even she could save this dumpster fire of a movie.

Seth Workman

Why do you, Natalie, and other people in these comments act so arrogant about film making and editing choices. You think you could do better? Don’t hate too much on this comment plz. You know I’m not completely wrong

Paul G

Nat just a note nobody was liking or disliking this movie due to blocking or editing choices.

Alvin Baca

Im so sorry you had to watch this movie.

Omni Jacala

When it comes to this movie, any time a youtuber says "I'd love to know what you all think," I can't help but say "Oh boy... you probably don't want to know what people think of this one." =P

Not red salt. White salt on top of red ground. It's not the same base as Empire Strikes Back. Not snow. Not cold. Those were dice hanging in the Millennium Falcon. It was in the original trilogy, too. They're a take off on fuzzy dice. Luke got them off the Falcon on the island. He never gave them to Leia because he was never there - the dice Leia had and Kylo found were projections, same as Luke. It's Star Wars and I enjoyed parts of it, but it was a horribly written and edited movie. I can't blame Luke for yeeting out at the end. One thing I really liked was Luke's projection didn't have a gray beard, and he had his Episode 4 lightsaber, even though we had seen it be destroyed with Kylo and Rey's fight. Luke was projecting an image of himself as he sees himself, so the projection wasn't as old and still had his first light saber. That was a very nice touch.

John Piazza

Fun fact. The reason you felt this movie seemed different was because this is the only Star Wars movie in the sequel trilogy not directed by JJ Abrams

djKENTO

Once again… nobody ever takes into account that Kylo Ren was shot in the guts by a gun that had been sending people THROUGH THE FUCKIN AIR when it hit NEAR THEM… Nobody ever takes that into account when it comes to Rey and Finn holding their own… It’s all on the screen.

Thomas Malley

Somehow I enjoyed it more watching it with you, than I did the four other times I've watched this. You're right the comedy only worked some of the time. I specifically hated how it would undercut the seriousness of a scene with a joke, but then again, everything felt more soap-opera than previous installments ... although, to be fair, Star Wars has always been a soap opera just set in space. :)

Daniel Vezina

It's an OK movie, but the problem is "Episode VIII". It has NO RIGHT to be an episode of the Skywalker Saga, at best it's a side quest!!! +Your face when they explain the Canto Bit plan

Alan Kobb

Cur - A mean dog. It comes from the Norse. I seem to recall Loki using the word as well. That may be where you remember it from.

Chris Lane

I finally did it, I re-watched this movie in its entirety for the first time since seeing it in theaters. Honestly I enjoyed it slightly more but there's still a TON of flaws and story changes that don't sit well with me, especially coming off of what was set up in The Force Awakens. The Rose Tico saying "omg for love" when Finn could have saved everyone with a bold, heroic move was REALLY off-putting (and nothing against the actress AT ALL, I feel terrible about how she was treated for the role of her CHARACTER and not her portrayal, stupid fanboys). Also Leia having her Mary Poppins moment out of nowhere, the endless "running out of fuel" bit which makes no sense....I could go on...lol

Andrew Courtney

I enjoyed this trilogy and honestly I enjoy all three trilogies. Just because some of the characters are ones we’ve seen before is no reason to keep things status quo. I really like the chances this trilogy as a whole takes. I enjoyed seeing these older versions of our characters behave in ways I see as plausible based on experiences we learned that they had gone through. In my opinion I approach every movie with the goal of being entertained and this trilogy always entertained me as did the others. It has its flaws but every movie does. I really enjoyed the reaction Nat. Stay Golden.

Rey, the last Force Bender.

Mike Yocom

"...that library contained nothing that the girl Rey does not already possess [because she yoinked the books]." — Yoda, trolling Luke even from beyond the grave Yes, you saw correctly, the kid at the end did use the Force to get the broom. This is first place in the Sequel Trilogy ranking for me, and right smack in the middle of the overall ranking, ahead of I, II, VII, and definitely IX, but behind III through VI. It's got some pacing issues and about 45—60 minutes of fat that could be trimmed, and the experimental approach is both its greatest strength and greatest weakness. It would have been a whole lot better if they'd done what they'd told us they were going to do and used the story group to maintain continuity between the movies as they produced the trilogy, instead of "VII was too much Star Wars by-the-numbers, so let's give VIII to a very experimental director and give him free reign and minimal instructions to work off of."

Jason Dolan

Ironically, most of the things you liked about this movie are the things people who hated it didn't like. I think hamminess is every Star Wars movie, even Rogue One. I'm a person who enjoys the sequel trilogy more than the prequel trilogy and I think that's the dividing line in Star Wars fandom, and there are some who hate both and some who like both. Looking forward to seeing you finish out this trilogy with The Rise of Skywalker. Hopefully you do it this month!

Vincent Valentin

hated this movie in theatre and yeah its still a mess. I thought i might like it more now with some space but no.

Ruben Daniel

The planet at the end is actually called Crait and first appeared in the book Leia: Princess of Alderaan. The book deals with Leia's introduction to the rebellion as a teen and also introduces Amilyn Holdo as a teenager.

Andrew Fortner

I think it can be a fun movie if that's all you want but if you think about a lot of things the plot just kinda falls apart. I don't care about realism but they should at least be consistent. There are a million things I could mention but the worst is the lightspeed ramming. If that was a thing that they knew about then why not do it before and why isn't it used in every space battle. It basically makes every large space battle from the past and future trivial and dumb. They could have just made a few lightspeed droid ships and wipe out an entire fleet. I could rant about this forever but this series was doomed when they pitted directors against each other and had no unified plan for all three movies. I wish I liked more about this movie but I've thought about it too much to enjoy it anymore.

Marty McGee

This movie was both brilliant and horrible. It's very inconsistent in it's story. When it's good, it's really good, but when it's bad...well you know. The good: For all the complaints about Luke's character, I actually loved his arc in this film. He made a mistake. That mistake led him to question his own faults and the faults of the things he had blindly believed. I loved the Kylo/Rey storyline. Yes it mirrors the Luke/Vader story a bit, but the connection they have and the conflict in both of them I would argue makes it so much more compelling. We all know Rey is more powerful than she should be. Yes that's a plot convenience, but it honestly doesn't bother me as much as other things in this story. The Leia Poppins scene was just poorly executed visually. The concept I really like. It's not mentioned really in the movies, but it can be assumed that Leia took limited Force training. As a Senator and later General it would have just made sense to do so. Survival skills would have been first and formats. With minimal warning, Jedi can put themselves into a hibernation trance to slow their body functions in a critical situation. This was explained in the books which are no longer canon. They can also pull objects to them. Which is what she essentially did. The ship having much greater mass and the vacuum of space allowed her to force-pull herself back to the ship. It really is pretty cool, except they completely botched the visual making it look silly. And of course, the fight between Kylo, Rey, and Snoke's guards is one of the coolest looking fights in all of the SW films in my opinion. The bad: The whole Resistance storyline was very bad in my opinion. Poe is a great fighter pilot yes and I love his character. But Leia was absolutely right about his decision to take on the dreadnaught. Or was she? If they hadn't the dreadnaught would have just followed them with the rest of the FO fleet. Being a superior ship it probably could have destroyed the Resistance fleet before they could outrun it. Which brings me to the chase sequence. Kind of reminded me of the OJ low-speed chase. A little ridiculous and convenient story device to stretch the plot. The Finn and Rose mission wound up being pointless as well like Nat mentioned. Finn sacrificing himself to cripple the big gun would have made a great plot point that could've been used in the next movie. Rose saving him to make a sentimental point makes no sense in either story or execution. Guy is going to crash into a weapon, possibly saving the rest of your comrades. Instead you fly INTO him purposely to stop him. Both of you in badly serviced vehicles which are basically convertibles. Not too smart. The ugly: Vice Admiral Holdo vs. Poe. This made absolutely no sense. All he asked was if there was a plan. She could have said yes. She could have informed everyone there was a plan. She didn't have to go into details. By not giving ANY explanation, she sowed the seeds of mutiny and ultimately to the mission that wound up exposing her plan to the enemy. Instead she was more concerned about using her authority to put Poe in his place. I really enjoyed your reaction Nat! All in all I still like this movie even with its flaws. I really don't know why so many people take it personally. There may be technical and story flaws in any film, but enjoyment is completely subjective. My real issue with the sequel trilogy is coming up. But I'll save my thoughts for that reaction.

Ulrich Unterbrunner

The movie has received a lot of hate, which in my opinion is unfounded. My biggest criticism is Disney not sticking to a prewritten concept, like the other two trilogies did. Yet, they learned from it at least. The movie itself was actually quite well made and thought out (like Luke not moving the salt over the red minerals, when stepping on it), but a lot fell away on the cutting board. Johnson made the movie about an hour longer and there is no Star Wars Director's cut, so we are left with what was considered long enough for a theatrical release. The Progs (little flying creatures) were a necessary evil, because they shot on a monastery island off the coast of Ireland, where hosts of puffins exist which got into almost every on-site shot. So they had to create a cover-up design - and of course merchandise. Also a lot of hate went towards the suicide-jump with the argument, why not doing it always? There are multiple legend sources, which explain why it isn't common practice and why someone has to be one hell of a navigator to even consider pulling it off, while willing to sacrifice himself. Another issue many had was Holdo not giving Poe information which led to his mutiny, but everyone who actually serves or served in the military could count the number of times a rank 8 officer talked to a rank 3 officer about his plans - especially if communicating having a plan alone could compromise the secrecy of said plan (after all they weren't sure how the FO tracked them through hyperspace - on a hand without fingers. Also Poe only went into action AFTER he discovered there was a plan, which he simply did not like, because it screwed up his plan. And THAT is not what a low ranking officer in a military hierarchy should do. Also if the Star Wars department at Disney would not have let itself be intimidated by the loudest criticism towards the Last Jedi they might have been able to complete the trilogy on way better terms than they finally did. They could have even made two trilogies out of it (7, 8 and another 9, as well as a 10, 11 and 12 out of the actual 9)

Ben Solo is just a boy standing in front of a girl.. and getting rejected. Feelsbadman

David Sumner

This was my least favorite Star Wars Movie. until Rise of Skywalker. You want a really good movie? Watch Roadhouse!

Michael Patrick

Hello. What happened to the reactions to episodes 4, 5, and 6? Did they get taken down?

John

This video critique sums up a lot of my problems with 7,8, and 9 and why the choices made by the writers and directors made these films fall short of the first 2 trilogies. It's not just a rant bashing the films. He actually points out creative reasons why something worked in one film but doesn't when used differently in another. I found it an interesting analysis and I agree with most all of it. https://youtu.be/XtArKawnWNI I would not watch this until after you've seen all three sequel trilogy films. It does contain spoilers for all of them.

Philip

This new trilogy has several problems. In my opinion though, the biggest issue is that there was no real vision and too many hands on the pot. I'm so happy Favre is in charge now.

FoH Film Club

oh there are problems. Regrettably I can't bring myself to relive this, 😆 y'all that can, or have yet to see it, godspeed.

Stoned Misthios

I luv the last jedi &will never understand the vitriolic hate it received. Glad u enjoyed it &can't wait for Rise of Skywalker!

Cody Steele

I'll see you on the recap!

MightyHobo

Easily the most divisive movie in all of Star Wars. This movie feels so much like it was being made by three people all with different visions. The threads that Abrams built with the first movie, the story Johnson wanted to tell and the product that Disney wanted to be able to sell to kids. You can see the bones of a good story in this movie but it's just not executed properly.

Jay Robert

I very rarely use the word "hate" but I hate this movie. I may make my own video about why some day. There was no character I could relate to or get behind and that's just one of the problems I had with it. I was pleased to hear every negative criticism you had of it.

Just Shelve It

There are def problems with this movie and all the Sequels. But this is one of my favorite SW movies. I haven't read all the comments, but Crait, was not the same planet from Empire. That was Hoth. Crait was a mining planet, and the salt was the white on top of the red. If you rewatch, you'll see Luke never disturbs the salt, a clue he wasn't there. I loved that they did Snoke that way. And I can't say much more without getting into the final movie, so I'll stop now. But I'm glad you didn't hate this.

Adverb

By far the best Star Wars movie since the Empire Strikes Back.

panacamanana

That planet at the end wasn't from the original films. The White was salt. The earth underneath it was just Red Rock. It wasn't snow, or a place we had ever been.

Thomas Richter

This movie was so shit, I didn't rewatched it after I saw it in the movies for the first time.

Adrian G Ramirez

Mmm these comments took me back to the dumpster fire that was 2017 internet arguments. So much nostalgia :-)

Kyle Larsen

Dannyb You the fucking man. Don't let these bitches hold you down. You come with facts and they don't have shit and they come after 1 of like 5 things you point out not even mentioning you right about the rest. Don't let the bitches get you down. They are our greatest strength! Hate is envy! 🖕🏽

Kyle Larsen

Hey J.C.G Want you to know I respect everything you say and it has merit.... but kindly go fuck yourself you faggot!!! Fucking twat ass cunt don't know fucking shit trying to act like a fucking critic in a fucking patrons comments. Go KYS you fucking loser! Thank again for comments. BAN

JackRan only if JackChased

Sincerely there is only one issue with this movie that I can't ultimately look past. Are there things I would have liked to see done differently? Sure. But ultimately it all works within the universe and its keeping this franchise alive and that's what's important. Because stories that spark imagination are the foundation to progress and that's never a bad thing. No what irks the heck out of me is the lack of time jump between films. It's such a small but important thing.

Gilbert Gonzalez

Didn’t know this, but apparently some of the resistance fighters that appear in the trenches on Crait at the end are Mark Hamil’s children, and one of them is Gareth Edwards, the director of Rogue One lol

Richard Maurer

In truth each trilogy has its problems, but they start out minor in the original, escalate in the prequels, then turn into a raging inferno in the sequels. In the first two these flaws are tolerable, in third not so much.

Toasty

My biggest problem with this movie is how Luke was kinda just thrown away as a character to make way for the new era of jedi. His story was pretty much, saved the galaxy from the Sith by believe in the light side of his father and putting faith in him; to attempting to kill his nephew cause he saw a little bit of dark side and ruining everything he had worked towards. Then he hides on an island for years in shame. Now this is canon and so many possible stories are just thrown out the window as possiblities.

jamie jones

I loved this movie. The next one however…..just makes me sad with how bad it turned out.

jamie jones

But star wars has always been about lukes struggle with the dark side. Him making the mistake with ben, seeing what he would become, and then blaming himself only to return to save the rebellion is classic star wars.

Slick447

This movie has some great moments, but I'll never understand why they didn't choose to write all 3 films in one go. Or even filming them back to back to back, LOTR style. This is one of the biggest franchises in film history and they were like, "Yeah, let's swap up directors, writers, and producers as we go. It'll be fun!"
