New experiment! In this video, I’m discussing how many music producers, myself included, sometimes get stuck in cycles of perfectionism and overthinking during music production. This often happens when we spend too long tweaking sounds, mixdowns, or mastering, which can ultimately make things worse instead of better. My approach is to set internal time limits, keeping the flow of creativity alive without overanalyzing. I reflect on how technical skills should come naturally with practice, and overthinking can hinder the creative process. I also touch on the importance of self-reflection over chasing new gear as a solution to creative blocks.

Key points:

Overthinking and tweaking too long can harm creativity.

Setting internal time limits helps stay in the flow state.

Creativity works best when technical skills are instinctive, not forced.

New gear can be inspiring, but it shouldn't distract from internal challenges.

Self-reflection is crucial in overcoming perfectionism and finding creative balance.

Is it an overstatement to say the more I think about things, the worse they get? Are your first ideas always your best, and any further refinement always makes them worse? "In truth, the good artist's or thinker's imagination is continually producing things good, mediocre, and bad, but his power of judgment, highly sharpened and practiced, rejects, selects, joins together; thus we now see from Beethoven's notebooks that he gradually assembled the most glorious melodies and, to a degree, selected them out of disparate beginnings. The artist who separates less rigorously, liking to rely on his imitative memory, can in some circumstances become a great improviser; but artistic improvisation stands low in relation to artistic thoughts earnestly and laboriously chosen. All great men were great workers, untiring not only in invention but also in rejecting, sifting, reforming, arranging." Friedrich Nietzsche, Human, All Too Human

Oof. Flashbacks from ELIZA. “How does it make you feel that…” You could have accomplished more by cutting the chatbot, which is more of a prop device to let you “tell us things”. Otherwise, it’s somewhat interesting that the model has internalized the generic advice that we hear so much. A problem occurs when we let that direct our attention, for instance about the conditions for Flow State. Having said all this, I’m glad you can use this conceit to address a few of the most glaring issues with the current state of #MusicTech. Mostly thinking about socialized approaches to “brute force problem-solving” and the “shop therapy” aspect of buying the latest devices (plugins or hardware gear).

Loved this! Topic was great and really insightful info. You hit spot on with a lot of the ideas around gear getting in the way, about time limits, overthinking etc. Wow loved it and found new ideas in it. I def do that with plugins, think they will solve something and get in the way. Although I have also gotten great plugins that do help. I keep thinking how I need to time limit myself to get more done. But I also need to target specific goals otherwise I just end up meandering with synths (which is fun but over time I get nothing finished). So goals like working in a genre, or using a track as a guide, or selecting 4 or 5 track ideas to finish and release. Well at least that's what I am trying to do. I enjoyed the format you used here! I found it helpful for Chat to rephrase and summarize your statements/ideas and to prompt you like a discussion. I can see how it gets a little boring, but this should also allow you to create content faster. Whereas if you cut out the Chat you might as well summarize the talking points and do a different type of video. So this was nice that it felt just raw and real while being insightful and informative. I'd watch more like this.
