Today, I explored the new Step Access module in Bitwig Studio 5.3, which simplifies creating polyrhythms, polymeters, and euclidean sequences in the Grid. Previously, this required complex patching, but now it’s streamlined. I combined it with other modules, like Pitches, to create intricate patterns and explored how its stereo and voice stacking capabilities open up unique possibilities.

Key Points:

Step Access Module:

Easily set loop length, total steps, offsets, and playback speed.

Outputs a phase signal compatible with other Grid modules (e.g., Pitches).

Playback Speed: Works in musical units (e.g., eighth notes, quarter notes), with creative control by adjusting total steps or sequence length.

Polyrhythms & Polymeters:

Voice Stacking: Assigns different parameters (e.g., step length or offset) to each voice for layered rhythms.

Example: One voice loops over two steps while another loops over four, creating polymetric patterns.

Stereo Processing:

Every signal (audio, pitch, gates) is stereo, allowing independent left/right channel manipulation.

Used Split/Merge modules to create unique melodies or sequences on separate stereo channels.

Adjusted stereo width to control how far apart left/right signals sound, or blend them back together.

Creative Modulation:

Modulated step lengths and offsets dynamically with the Steps module.

Experimented with melodic variations by introducing octave shifts and stereo differences.

Efficient Design:

Stereo signals allow for dual processing (e.g., independent pitch/gate manipulation) with a single module.

Example: A single stereo oscillator can act as two distinct oscillators for left and right channels.

This new Step Access module makes complex rhythms much easier to create, and its integration with the Grid's modular tools provides endless creative potential. Let me know what you think, and happy experimenting!

Access your Steps

Step Access is the latest Grid module in Bitwig Studio 3.5. It lets you control sequencers with pinpoint accuracy and access specific steps in a sequence. You can define where the loop starts and ends and at what speed it runs. It’s perfect for polyrhythms, polymeters, or Euclidean step sequencing. Plus, it works great with voice stacking and other creative tricks in Bitwig! Holy smokes! This stereo pitch manipulation is nuts! I don’t have the beta but I’m already exploring this to great results! You should do a video just exploring this more! Basically I stereo split pitch info used the width then quantized the output and used voice stack to modulate the width which sounds like it’s working to give different pitches per voice.
