Update: the Script can now generate more than one bar of notes. up to 8. theres a slider and default is 1bar. you can re-download, link to Github is at the end of the post.

Update: changed the download link from the "zip" to Github directly and added install instructions. Hopefully it doesn't trigger the windows defender anymore. have fun.

I’ve created an experimental Bitwig Studio controller script called Melody Maker to simplify generating random, scale-based melodies directly in the piano roll. Frustrated by Bitwig’s piano roll limitations, I designed this tool to automate melodic ideas while retaining musicality. Here’s how I use it:

Steps I Follow:

Install the Script:

Download the .js file from my GitHub/Patreon (linked in the video description).

Drag it into Bitwig Studio or place it in the Controller Scripts folder (under Documents/Bitwig Studio).

Enable it via Settings > Controllers > Add > Polarity Melody Maker.

Set Up Parameters:

Choose a scale (e.g., Aeolian/minor) and root note (e.g., C♯).

Adjust sliders for:

Rest Probability: Controls gaps between notes (0% = no rests).

Repetition: Adds looping motifs within the melody.

Note Length Variation: Mixes short and sustained notes.

Octave Start: Shifts the melody’s octave range.

Repeating Notes: Toggles whether identical consecutive notes are allowed.

Note Probability: Weight how often specific scale degrees (tonic, dominant, etc.) appear.

Generate Melodies:

Click Generate in Arranger/Launcher to create MIDI clips in the timeline or clip launcher.

Use Repaint to revert to the last generated sequence if manual edits don’t work.

Experiment and Refine:

Regenerate melodies with new parameters to explore variations.

Adjust note probabilities to create “darker” (lower tones) or “brighter” (higher tones) melodies.

Why This Works:

The script uses Bitwig’s Controller API to automate MIDI note generation while adhering to musical scales.

Parameters like Repetition and Note Length Variation add human-like phrasing.

No third-party plugins needed—everything runs natively in Bitwig.

Future Plans:

Add GUI improvements (dividers, visual organization).

Expand parameter controls (rhythm patterns, velocity randomization).

Your Feedback Matters: Let me know if this helps your workflow or what features you’d like next!

Extending the Bitwig Piano Roll

Hey Everyone, I've read many posts about the Piano Roll and wondered if I could contribute something there. And I came across something and have here extended the Piano Roll with a Melody Maker. With this, you can project random sequences directly into the Piano Roll. Everything is based on scales and probabilities. - The entire script is freely available: https://bit.ly/40X2Pb2 (download raw button top right) - put it in your bitwig controller script directory (usually documents/bitwig studio/controller scripts) - open settings 👉 controllers and click "add controller" at the bottom - select vendor "polarity" and then "melody maker" Video transcribed, summarized and Q&A on my Blog (no ads): https://polarity.me/posts/polarity-music/2025-01-29-melody-maker-bitwig-piano-roll-extension/ -- 💕 Support me on Patreon: https://bit.ly/3PgbxZz 💰 donate via Paypal: https://bit.ly/3cae9t8 🎧 my Music: https://polarity.bandcamp.com/ 💾 my Tools: https://polarity.me/posts/articles/2024-08-04-polarity-tools/ 💻 my Gear: https://kit.co/polarity/polarity-music-kit 👉 Discord: https://discord.gg/eWwFBww 👉 Website: https://polarity.me -- 🛒 Buy/Upgrade Bitwig Studio & Support me https://bit.ly/3yQEyDU 🛒 VST/AU Plugin Deals https://bit.ly/3zcvo66

Hey Robert. Klasse Script, danke dafür. :)

Lynn Johnson

I could not download it because it is being stopped on my Windows 10 as a virus.

It's dope! I was hit by a lack of inspiration lately - working on a trance-like track - and this was the script that did unlock it? Thanks so much! Those little sequences are very well balanced! Would it be possible to make them longer than 4 beats? The main pattern could be 4-beat long, and repeated (with subtle random differences ;) )

Thank you for this - it's already wonderful, and I hope that you will continue to refine it. Does it currently work only in lengths of one bar, or am I just being dim?!

Paterfiets

I hope Bitwigs new updates to the arranger and pianaroll won't break this script or I am stuck to 5.3 forever...

Problem at my side: I use 12 controllers and on the top right it schows me max only 9 controllers. Yours (Melody Maker) is out of range... do you know how to handle that? (It is not possible to hide other controllers on the top right)

next task, make a hardware device that controls this and other ideas that you might have 😅

Nice! Pretty clever! Almost like MIDI Transformers for that other Berlin-based DAW… Didn’t realize controller scripts could work this way (without processing some kind of input) or that they were actually JS. Maybe the opportunity for a collab with Jürgen Moßgraber (DrivenByMoss)? An obvious thing to do, at this point, is add more “modes”. While it’d be hard to fit all the 1490 scales in Ian Ring’s list, it could be useful to have something like a structure to get access to more scales. https://ianring.com/musictheory/scales/ In fact, both of your scripts could probably do something fun with chords. (Been playing with a kind of “chord dictionary”, for the past little while. It’s fun to have options. And chords which go all the way to 13th notes are heptatonic scales, structured by layering seven thirds…) Your scripts are giving me some further ideas as well. While I’m not a coder, these are readable enough that I might be able to get something together, especially with help from LLMs. Sure, there’s very little in way of interface. Still, the clips themselves can provide some of what’s needed. Really wish Bitwig GmbH could start doing significant work on the DAW’s pianoroll. It’s time. (Remember having issues with controller scripts when I first got into the Bitwig world through 8-Track, which was stuck in the old BWS codebase, at the time.)

Oh, and a feature which would be fun in this one: a percentage of glides/legato. At one point, it gets fairly close to Riffer. The “Acid sequencers” are also a bit like that.

Hi, thanks for this! I must be doing something wrong. The option Polarity is not appearring for me in the controller section.. The 2 files are in the folder Controller scripts. What am I doing wrong?

Jonatan Granner

Cool script - easy to use and super fun! Thank you so much for this! The Hirajoshi scale doesn't seem to give the notes I would expect - maybe there's a small bug with that scale? Controller scripts seem to have a lot of potential for extending the piano roll! Wishes for the future: Maybe this could be used for adding groove/swing to notes based on e.g. certain drum machines like Ableton (I find that Bitwig's 'shuffle' is not sufficient for a lot of genres). Or an arp extension with more complex patterns.

hey guys, polarity doesn't show up in the controller script drop down menu, its just copying it in the controller script folder right ? Oo
