Rotary Control Bitwig Integration (Patreon)

In this video, I checked out the new Bitwig Studio integration for the Roto Control MIDI controller by Melbourne Instruments. While the controller has been around for a bit, this beta integration is new and introduces some pretty slick interaction between Bitwig and Roto’s hardware features, especially its motorized knobs and tactile feedback. I walked through how its modes work, how remote controls are auto-mapped in Bitwig, and how you can also do manual mappings that the controller actually remembers across DAWs and devices.

Key points:

Three control modes: MIDI mode (basic CC output), Plugin mode (device/VST control), and Mix mode (mixer control with mute/volume).

Automatic Bitwig mapping: Open the remote panel in Bitwig to get instant parameter mapping for devices, motorized knobs mirror changes and offer tactile feedback.

Motor feedback & precision: Knobs and buttons offer physical limitations, stepped feedback, and button presses that feel better than typical MIDI controllers.

Manual mapping feature: You "learn" from the Roto Control side, select a knob, then turn a DAW parameter. It detects value types (buttons, lists, ranges).

Device-stored mappings: Mappings are saved on the controller itself, allowing portability across setups and DAWs.

Transport control included: Start/stop/record/etc. directly from the device.

Pinning remote panels: Lock a remote page in Bitwig so you don’t lose it when switching views.

Firmware & script required: Update firmware and download the Bitwig controller extension to access features.
