Looking into Low, Random, 7DeadlySnares and more from BEATSURFING

Today I'm looking into "LOW" and some of the other Beatsurfing plugins. To me, all of them are actually romplers with effects. They really try to hide it and lead you to believe it's a "real" synth. The definition of synthesizers is fluid, but I think most people don't expect to buy a sampler with 15 samples and basic effects for 150 bucks.

I also kinda tried to hack the plugin and extract the contents. I found 60 very, very short samples, some are for the sub oscillator and some Illustrator graphics inside the 16MB VST3.

I'm not sure if I want to make this video public because I don't want to get sued for some of the things I say, so I'm making it visible here on Patreon only. Maybe I can save some of you some money.

Atm I'm waiting to get my money back for LOW (49 bucks), fingers crossed. But it was worth it to test the plugin.

Let me know what you think. Have you already bought a plugin? Are you okay with the website's wording? (I know ads are always misleading.)

$150 for 15 Samples? The Truth About Beat Surfing Plugins

In this video, I investigate whether the "Low" plugin by Beat Surfing is a scam after a Patreon member asked if I could replicate it in Bitwig. Despite their marketing claims about "DNA tone mutation" and complex synth engines, my tests reveal that this $150 instrument is actually just a small collection of pitch-shifted samples. I demonstrate how the developers use forced modulation and limited octave ranges to hide the fact that you are essentially paying a premium for a 60MB sample pack. Save your money, because I’ll explain why this marketing is misleading and how you can easily achieve these results in your own DAW. 00:00 - Introduction: Is "Low" a Scam? 00:33 - Marketing Claims & Pricing 01:26 - Testing the Audio Engine 02:07 - The Reveal: It’s Just Pitch-Shifted Samples 02:51 - How They Hide the Static Nature (Forced Modulation) 03:53 - Why Upper Octaves Are Blocked 04:53 - The Most Expensive Sample Pack Ever? 05:42 - Previous Experience with "Seven Deadly Snares" 07:11 - Thoughts on Other Beat Surfing Plugins (Random, Lunch Table) 08:40 - The File Size Giveaway (16MB) 09:29 - UI/UX Design Quality 11:00 - Deconstructing "DNA Tone Mutation" 12:10 - Final Thoughts & Conclusion Video transcribed, summarized and Q&A on my Blog (no ads): -- 💕 Support me on Patreon: https://bit.ly/3PgbxZz 💰 donate via Paypal: https://bit.ly/3cae9t8 🎧 my Music: https://polarity.bandcamp.com/ 💾 my Tools: https://polarity.me/posts/articles/2024-08-04-polarity-tools/ 💻 my Gear: https://kit.co/polarity/polarity-music-kit 👉 Discord: https://discord.gg/eWwFBww 👉 Website: https://polarity.me -- 🛒 Buy/Upgrade Bitwig Studio & Support me https://bit.ly/3yQEyDU 🛒 VST/AU Plugin Deals https://bit.ly/3zcvo66

Yeah, I'd say probably don't publicly release this video until you've got your money back. 🤣🤣

I bought 4 plugins from beatsurfing at a decent price (around 30 bucks). You're probably right about the rompler thing, but the interface is nice and usable. I would never buy these for 149. Cheat code is ok.

Weigh your options: take your concerns with them in the hope that it can improve things or generate something which will go in the flood of clickbait. Because, what you describe isn't just about one plugin maker. Nor is this one example particularly egregious. Personally, I really like the Playground app which became the Beatsurfing app. Random has surprised me positively. Their Beatfader concept is rather neat. Besides, their business model isn’t nearly as bad as it sounds, in broader context.

In case you were not aware, Plugin Boutique was giving away both BeatSurfing 7DeadlySnares and BeatSurfing Random a month ago, as “free gift with purchase”. Which seemed about the right price. It looked fairly obvious the prices were mostly anchor prices, and people were supposed to get them in a sale and then feel they’d got extra value. There’s also an Alckemy video about 7deadlysnares from last year, which suggests it’s partly sample based and morphing the samples, and at least some “engines” being scrolling through the (noise) samples. Overall his review is a bit more positive than yours, if somewhat weakly recommending it - eg “not terrible” sounds. (And it’s worth remembering Alckemy’s process is mostly experimenting to create and then resample sounds and filter/transform them.) Ewen

Yeah you're right about these.. Personally I wouldn't buy any of them, but I don't feel like there's anything inherently wrong with romplers.

Apoplexia

Yeah their plugins are dog shit. Which is why they don’t have trials for any of them, just like Phil Speiser.

Apoplexia

Maybe you should publish this. Maybe send it to Weaver Beats because he seems to have a lot of experience dealing with shady plugin developers

So there's a video on youtube called "Is This the Future of Bass? (LØW)" by Underdog Music School that has some insight into the making of Low. I watched it and it was interesting enough. Give it a watch also and see what you think. I have The Random plugins and 7 deadly snares but they came as gifts from various other places. Worth it if cheap otherwise not that much, but still fun to play with. Had to sub to post and watch this vid hehe :) Cheers!
