Today I explored Smart Comp 3 by Sonible and found its compression approach with the interactive map both intuitive and effective.

Instead of manually dialing in settings, I can simply position a dot on the map to achieve consistent compression across multiple tracks, which is ideal for projects like albums or EPs where cohesion is important.

I also compared it to the APU Loudness Compressor, which lets me match dynamic ranges between different drum loops for a uniform sound. While Smart Comp 3 only offers single-band compression for now, its workflow feels like a step forward for achieving fast and consistent results.

Introduction to Smart Comp 3 by Sonible and its unique approach to compression using a visual map system

The map allows you to move a dot to intuitively set attack, threshold, release, and ratio, simplifying the process

Useful for achieving consistency across different drum tracks and projects by placing the dot in the same spot for similar results

Analyzing and matching compression “vibe” or settings on different drum loops for a coherent album or EP sound

Commentary on traditional compressors versus this visual, goal-driven approach

Smart Comp 3 currently only supports full-band compression, not multiband

Discussion of APU Loudness Compressor with its learn function for matching dynamic range between source and target signals

Personal workflow: using band splitters and multiple APU compressors per band to match dynamic range in Bitwig

Preference for tools that let you match dynamics directly, instead of manual tweaking of compressor parameters

Not many plugins offer this map-based or learning dynamic range function; user encourages experimentation with these tools

This is How All Compressors SHOULD Work - sonible smart:comp 3

In today’s video, I want to show you why I think Sonible’s Smart:Comp 3 is doing something genuinely revolutionary. They’ve introduced a "Map" feature that changes the fundamental way we interact with compression. Usually, when we use a compressor, we are forced to work indirectly—tweaking attack, release, and ratio settings to hopefully arrive at a sound we have in our head. But what if you could just tell the plugin exactly where you want to end up? I break down how this "target-based" approach makes it incredibly easy to match the vibe of different drum loops, which is a lifesaver when you are trying to get consistency across different tracks on an album or EP. I also compare this workflow to the APU Loudness Compressor and show you a custom multiband setup I built in Bitwig to achieve similar results. This is exactly how I think compressors should operate in the future. No more guessing—just matching. I'm a huge Sonible fan so let's see what you have to say about this new iteration as I wonder if this 29€ update is really worth it.

looking forward to using this one, it sounds incredibly useful! i agree with you about having a certain sound in mind and this may just make it easier to achieve that quickly, which is often just the best thing in music

Where's the fun in that? If achieving a result is all that matters, you might as well just go and make music in Suno or something imo.. I actually enjoy the manual process and listening to the nuances of different compression characters and behaviours and these kind of tools are not my thing.. Each to their own though.
