I need to learn more about water control i often destroy a picture with too much ester not enough pigment etc

Emily

Carnival glass and other colored glass

Mary Lugo

maybe more urban (NY?) holiday scenes?

Cyndie Tozzo

I love landscapes and urban sketch types

SueLuvsthebeach

As a beginner (and retired engineer), I would like to see exercises in the different skills to gain a better understanding of how to paint with watercolor as opposed to following along but not understanding the why of the process.

Suzanne Burchman

Water control...how to gauge just the right amount especially when using high quality cold pressed paper.

Virginia Dudley

Technique in painting clouds and reflections in water.

Toni Wilkes

I enjoy your East Coast coastal paintings; however, West Coast has not been quite as abundant. I’m thinking about people back, lit under an umbrella, enjoying the West Coastal views. They would be sitting on the sand, possibly a blanket so it would be mostly shapes rather than details of people. Sunsets are nice, but not essential the landscapes are quite different on the West Coast. you could include a lifeguard stand if you find that interesting.

Patti

More urban sketches/painting--fall and winter

Ellen Crimi-Trent

def have to play with it Baohong takes more than arches you have to gauge thats why playing with the paper helps

Dawn Cerbone

My paintings look flat a lot of the time, I would like to learn how to add more life and movement without the muddy flat look taking over.

Heather Marasse

I would like to practice landscapes, especially prairie skies and fields. But any landscape type will be great practice.

Darcy Miller

Landscapes - rural; with techniques included. Thanks.

Gay Bauwens

Objects; primarily cut glass reflecting sunlight

Maggie Shontz

My husband is a glassblower and I would love to learn how to paint some of his work. I’ll send a couple examples. I recognize this may not be of interest to anyone else here, so feel free to ignore!

Patti

Oops, I wasn't paying attention to "Summer" poll. Urban sketches of any area any season would be helpful now. Thanks for all you do, Ellen.

Lally

Water control is an issue for me, would like to get more proficient in judging how much to use to avoid backruns.

Gulla

I'd like still lifes and I can always do some more techniques, all kinds.

Ellen Moran

Paint mixing/water content/brush selection/shadows

J

I love any ink and wash.

Linda Reid

Techniques while doing landscapes, flowers and/or still life’s. Following the seasons is fun too as I can change out my summer ones for fall etc…..

Patrice

Painting from my own photographs please!

Julie Marquette

water control especially in landscapes. With foreground, I have trouble duplicating 2nd or 3rd layers such as grasses. They seem to always blend in with the initial glaze. The timing and how damp the brush should be.

Patty

I need help with shading, such as in flowers to give them dimension/depth.

Myra Oakes

I like to do watercolor cards, ideas for birthdays, get well, new baby, maybe even wedding. I purchased a book on watercolor cards and none of these were included.

Debrah Binard

I would love to see how a glass vase is painted with reflections.

E Stuck

I would like help on mixing colors, I know you do a lot of greens, but I don’t really understand why you mix brown or pinks with other colors to do different shades.

Mary Jo Altom

Watching you paint landscapes, your comments about water control are great.

Veronica Konieczny

My flowers and landscapes always look too heavy! I need to lratn layering!

Karen Daigle

I always overthink and then over paint! Ideas on when to stop painting!

Diana

Techniques of painting waves, water, reflections, and objects too!

Tanja Brownlee

I would have ticked all of them if I could. Cute cards for beginners appeals to me. I like to spend time with youngest granddaughter painting as she shy's away from painting on her own. Together, working on making cards that are interesting and cute, bleeding colours together and playing around with abstract techniques is considered having fun 1:1 with grandma.

Joe Coley

Landscapes that include a structure. Like farmhouse in Tuscany, Od barn, etc.

Barbara Clark

I’d love to see Christmas card ideas! I need to start painting them!

Robin

Landscapes of the American West and Southwest?

Lois

loose painting, abstracts, mystical use of light

Pat

Water control & amount of paint I tend to overwork my brush strokes & ruining the areas, especially landscapes, skies I’ve tried less H2O, more pigment, the tea to coffee consistencies & do ok on other subjects. You are a great teacher. I wish I could afford to attend an in person retreat After I recover from upcoming knee replacement surgery I will try.. your tutorials have gotten me through a lot the past year 1/2💖

Cathy Knapp

Still life with maybe some flowers as part of the scene

Julia Lowe

Techniques, including water control, and using correct brushes in different ways. Love yo see more skies.

Linda McCrackin

Vases in both glass and brass. (Especially filled with roses!)

Dawn Mullaly

Still life - a single object like a vase of flowers is great, but something where there is a background, like seeing part of a room behind the vase of flowers. For techniques, I would say glazing, I always disturb the layer underneath.

Patricia B Greenberg

French countryside landscapes and also animals, cats preferred!

Eliz

Techniques. Layering. Texture.

Carole Parsons

Animals! Grizzlies, moose, wolf, birds in their habitat, otters, horses!!!

Carole Parsons

That's what I've been working on today! I only knew how to make one type of wave (courtesy, Ellen) I've been studying pictures and watching videos while grumbling about mixing paint colors.

Denise Putnam

light and shadow to create depth, etc.

Marie Louise Davidson

Love all of your tutorials, but techniques would be fabulous and so would how to work from a photo to a painting and how to simplify a photo to plan a painting. Thank you!

Diana

I don't know why waves are such issue with me, but I just keep plugging away. :)

ralph herrick

The ways to use and preserve charcoal in sketching and watercolor painting

Judy Werrell

Re: Animals barnyard animals?

Kathie

How to make watercolors more vibrant would be helpful.

Vera Johnson

I’ve not done much of glazing and would like to know more on that technique and lifting techniques, I like to stay loose and easy.

Angela

Glazing. For techniques. Flowers gladiolus. Surprise Lily also called naked ladies. I have them popping up now in my garden. Glass vases with textures

jody

Hiking paths in wooded area! Rivers, streams, swimming holes!

Lynn

Tea sets or tea parties

Maureen N

I love painting objects, furniture, rooms. I know perspective isn't your favorite thing but a couple tips on perspective as it relates to object would be great! Thanks for asking Ellen!

Jeff Nicla

I'd like to see paintings/tutorials on painting everyday objects. Things like hammers, pencils, bugs, whatever. I've been experimenting and some of them turn out pretty nicely

Maria Hay

Christmas cards please.

Amy Rodgers

I need to learn how to add more depth using shading, glazing, complementary colors. My paintings seem to flat in color schemes.

Tanja Brownlee

I agree. When looking at photos be it Landscape, flowers, still life etc, how or where does one focus to start, build and finish. What colours do you consider to lay down first from your palette that you continue with to next colour. I think it's yellows to Blues/Reds to greens/oranges but, how do you plan this for your project. It's the basics to start with light washes I usually struggle with.

Tanja Brownlee

I agree with new baby or wedding/shower definitely. For birthdays, I'll often paint a scaled back version of a 10x7 or part of a 12x9 down to a 7x5 or 6x4 and leave any wording to the inside. This way the recipient can choose to frame as a small picture after.

Jean

Lupines, hollyhocks

Susan Guenther

Parisian cafes, Parisian squares, French villas and flower gardens, French countryside and flower shops. Loved your Monet house and garden tutorial

Diane

Would love to paint Dahlias!

Susan Guenther

Colourful Mexican villages and streets hung with colourful flags. Mexican haciendas. Mexican beaches with palm trees and umbrellas, life guard chair, etc.

Tanja Brownlee

Completely agree!! I painted a constellation earlier this month and tried to capture the picturesque depths and emptiness of space. Often done with purples/pinks, blues, greens and yellows. Where does one start. How much to wash/splatter main colours and black/prussian blue. Stars are almost the easy part.

Susan Guenther

Banff, Lake Louise glacial mountain landscapes. English countryside, English cottages and flower gardens. Landscapes of English Lakes district, Yorkshire Dales. Beatrix Potters house and garden.

Susan Guenther

Still life’s of painting supplies . Jars of painting supplies . Hopefully some good ideas here. Would love help with water control would like to see a few tutorials where we can see your water container to see how much you’re using. Thanks, Ellen. Love your tutorials. 💕

Donna Taylor

Trying to get an even tone on a dark night sky with glistening moonlight on mountain outlines, pretty tough for me!

Susan Guenther

Would love to see the mini Monday paintings return. Quick sketches and paintings are fun sometimes. Thanks.

Tanja Brownlee

Yes!!! Bodega Bay!! Malibu beach, Santa Monica Pier, Long Beach.. anything LA.SFO,etc. Or Mediterranean: Nice, Monte Carlo, Positano, Athens. Drifting off topic, the Nile.

Nina

Cute cards and techniques about color blending, composition, sketching….all those things that you make look effortless. 🤷🏻‍♀️sigh!😊

Mketch

Water control and glazing. Often end up with mud.

Rhonda

Landscapes of mountains etc and help with compositions. Learning more of how to paint from my own photos as in how to know how to simplify the scene. I get overwhelmed with all of the details. Thanks for all of the time and effort you put into your tutorials. You make everything seem achievable.

Coral's Page

Mountains, canyons, interesting buildings, small towns, flowers in gardens, or arrangements, unique places.

Dorothy Brennan

I like your "smooshing" and would like to learn more about how to go back to finish after the smoosh!

susanna bonardi

I would like to learn more about water control in skies

Deirdre ‘Holly Girl’ Greene

Hi Ellen, I think the poll closed while I was thinking about my answer. I picked techniques, maybe as a little warm up at the beginning of the painting you are going to be doing. Thank you!

martha nagle

American landscapes. Small for cards.

Nancy Ann Barr

Water control and how to get dark shadows and light reflections.

Lynn

I need help in blending washes, like sunsets

Kelly Kolker

Urban scenes - especially European buildings, street scenes, ink and wash. I love to travel and like making paintings from my photos and experiences. More tips, demos and techniques would be appreciated! I love your art and teaching style!

Carol Collins

Silver tea service pieces -more Plain than highly decorative, fruit, cake, flowers, high contrast background

Deb O'Bannon

I would enjoy techniques of water control also. Not sure what you mean when you say consistency of " tea". Also how to paint glass and metal would be fun.

Carol Collins

I think I meant how to paint metal items in still life format. Brain fog

Gail Halloran

Landscapes of New England, mountains, lakes, woods.

Erin Barnes

Thanks so much, Ellen! I'm really excited to learn more about your techniques for painting water—whether it's oceans, waves, streams, or lakes—and those beautiful clouds from sunrises, sunsets, stormy skies, and big puffy clouds. I also find cauliflower blooms challenging—would you share some tips on how to avoid them? 🎨🙋🏻‍♀️ I see you have already posted a tutorial on some of these techniques. I’ll go take a look, thank you!!!

Leslie Turco

I would like to know how you decide which brush to use...firm vs floppy, etc

RioRita

Water control with landscapes and, when is it done? I seem to get very wrapped up with details which results in screwing it up!

Ramona Froehle-Schacht

Water control, especially how to effectively paint transparency, as in multiple flower petals. Also the forest. I hike in the BC rainforest and the evergreens and maples inspire and centre me. I would like to paint cards for my hiking buddies.

Terri Burns

Line and wash. I love the look and would like to learn more

joan cervisi

Washes, preventing blooms, layering and when adding water creates blooms

Martha

Would like some help with waterfalls

Jean Olsen

I have trouble with perspective. Especially with roads and paths fading into the distance.

Grace Horton

I chose still life because to me they are difficult. They just evade me!

Lisa Bird

I would like to have had animals on the list. I am working on adding animals into my landscapes to help add life, movement and interest.

Amy N.

As far as cards go, I like to get an early start on painting them. I see a need for fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas coming up as well as the usual--birthday, sympathy, thank you (always nice to have a few on hand) etc. I paint my cards 4 X 6 and just glue them on to cardstock (cut it 7 X 10 and fold it to 5 X 7). Fits into a standard envelope no problem. Atmospheric landscapes work well--could add a few holiday motifs in those for something different. Would love small scale atmospheric tutorials with holiday/seasonal motifs added.

Laura Roper

I'm not sure if this is a technique exactly, but I'd love to get better with shadows, particularly mottled shadows on the ground.

Amy N.

I would like to see Indian corn with husks attached and a background using special techniques such as salt, watercolor pencil shavings and plastic wrap.

Alice Moore

I wondered about doing a series on famous sights in well-known cities: e.g. Pike's Place Market in Seattle, Fanueil Hall in Boston, or Fenway, The Bean in Chicago etc

Alice Moore

I had trouble with my own painting of trying to show the light from a lighthouse at night. I did not think I hit the mark and had trouble making the surrounding night sky dark enough.

Ellen Crimi-Trent

I don't build a palette for the project the palette is always there with all the colors I use- I just mix the colors for the painting- you look at the colors in your photo or where you are and just paint the colors you see I have so many videos here showing you how to mix greens, paint skies, flowers etc, you just take that knowledge and paint- its that simple.

Leslie Turco

Leaving white spaces, for some reason, is really hard for me! How do you retrain yourself since kindergarten where you fill the whole page to leaving white spaces?

Krista Kahn

I would like some pointers on how to paint a dog- an Aussie doodle.

matthew garrett

1. Values. 2. Composition. 3. Also should one wet front and back of paper? Or spritz front of paper?

PR

Same!!

Claudette Cardey
