Edited but I don’t know which one is not revealed? Gaoshun here clearly stated they need more pawns they can trust, it is historically documented that ancient China’s inner palace is a political nightmare, and in one of Jinshi’s monologue in season one I think it was clearly stated that he became Jinshi so he can be free? Edit: if it was the d part, I swear there was a flashback in one of the episodes where they talked, will look for it but until then it is edited.

😼I love when the cats distract yall, lol. ✨️Great discussion as always. I'm glad this reveal was okay with ya'll. Like you said, it's a three pronged attack and I can appreciate how the characters' feelings fit into that. ✨️I agree with Lindsey on the part with Jinshi lifting Maomao's leg. It's a light ratcheting up of the sexy sexual tension that Jinshi must be feeling. Maomao didn't seem too happy about it to me tho, she seemed shocked. She even thought about kicking him. And honestly, I think he would stop if Maomao wanted him to. But he definitely was imposing HARD on her. ✨️Oh yeah, remember? Kousen was just the coverup name Jinshi requested Basen, Maomao (& I guess Gaoshun) to use when they are not in the room during the hunt. ✨️Totally agree that knowing more would be better for Maomao. Though her being averse to knowing more is a great character flaw imo. Considering how smart she is, it's frustrating but I think well done.

yeah Jinshi did overstep there (Maomao considered kicking him to get him off of her and she was closing her mouth, not puckering her lips when he got closer) which he realized (hence why he offered for them to have the discussion through the closed door) Maomao doesn’t hold it against him here since tensions were high and she did push him into wanting to “prove” his masculinity by making a move (personally i’ve always viewed the leg lifting as a move to make her “feel” that there is a “frog” there through the clothing, without intention for it to go anywhere further on the below the belt front) not exactly behavior i would be a fan of irl but this is historical fiction sooo

it’s basically the next level of the honey finger scene from season 1, Jinshi going for something that Maomao isn’t exactly comfortable with but not actually going through with it, perhaps more out of a lack of awareness/being a product of his environment (status and looks), than actual predatory intent

apothecary diaries falls into that similar category as chainsaw man wit me where it has SEXUAL CONTENT but not FANSERVICE, like there's a clear difference and it always annoys me when ppl mix the two up because they serve way different purposes

I think there's the combination of Jinshi not being told "no" in (either role of) his life, and Maomao's upbringing and personality making it difficult to actually express her actual intent and desires. It looked to me that for the anime they tried to make it a little less uncomfortable than I found the novel or manga: she considers kicking him, but it almost looks like they focus on her leg clinching Jinshi, not winding up to land a kick.

Don't forget that the Emperor has failed on several occasions to pass the test of the Shrine of Choosing, whereas (technically) Jinshi passed it first time with aid from a "consort": even without revealing Jinshi as his son, the traditions of the land do seem to imply Jinshi should be the current emperor over the claim of his brother/father.

at least in the translation i read, Maomao starts sweating when she realizes she pushed him too far and then considers kicking him, but then Jinshi immediately stops because he hears the dog approaching, no mention of her heartbeat anywhere during that interaction

@ImZeaT I'm days late but my reply to that is, no...she didn't. I read the light novel this past week for my own pleasure tbh and I got to that part. Nothing about it seems like Maomao was reciprocating. In the LN, Jinshi actually pushed up BOTH her legs and then when he leaned down to kiss her, she thought about kicking him as a response. Nothing about her heartbeat is mentioned at that point. She also thinks she "escaped by the skin of her teeth" with Lihaku and the dog showing up. She also hugs the dog and says good boy after he jumps right on Jinshi's back. Everything that Maomao does or doesn't do says she was not into it, more so shocked and befuddled. I think she probably would have laid there and took it (kiss or whatever) because she wouldn't want to get in trouble for hurting Jinshi by kicking him, fighting back, etc.

@Craig Payne Yea, Jinshi raise BOTH her legs in the light novel, like whoa. I don't think she clinched her leg around Jinshi though. I think that was him just hiking her leg up further.
