Jeremy

Earlier than usual 👍🏽

charlie

it was Arlong park Luffy wasn't there during the backstory which is a nice call back

Sanji Joestar

Franky's over emotiveness at anything is why i love him so much Bro is the SUPRA EMPATHIZER

Sanji Joestar

Nami and Jinbe's dynamic is already so good the way she acknowledges her suffering but decides to look at hope instead ❤️

Sanji Joestar

Neptune got a lot comments clowning on him but this is what I was personnaly anticipating the most. Everyone in this story has faults and learns something and for him he couldn't bare the contradictions of his past with Otohime's intent. Thus his inaction. Minister of the Left reminding him of what he can still do now was really good too. And the Neptune children are just amazing, with phenomenal growth but also empathy and understanding of their mother's wishes and the people's feelings.

Sanji Joestar

Crunchyroll locking in for the subtitles. Poor translations always just translate Sanji's line as '' K!ll yourself '' which completely misses his intent. Like you mentioned he talks about Harakiri and as commonly known it's an action intended to restore one's honor for their 'sins'. Sanji too is conflicted about Jinbe. He knows he helped Luffy but is also enraged that a crew/family member got hurt because of him. And this isn't the first time he reacts like that, and not because Nami is a woman. On the sea train, when he saw Usopp with Franky he called him an ''Ex Friend''. Since they separated. Right after Franky introduces himself and Sanji goes for the kicking defending '' Our Long-Nose '' as he called Usopp. Bro saw Franky and just forgot everything lmao. He's always very emotional when it comes to the crew and here again, he's trying to defend her. Thankfully this is Nami's story and she gets to decide what she wants. And she chose forgiveness. Which they all accepted. If he was really that unforgiving he wouldn't even give Jinbe the option and just kick him like he did with Franky. The fact he proposed it seems like a test more than anything to see if Jinbe was genuine. Again they just met the guy, story and all while we/the audience spent way more time with him and know him better. Sadly all this context is often very misunderstood or misrepresented.

Yeah someone on here was relentlessly dogging on Neptune for not participating in Otohime's efforts, but he pretty plainly states his reasons why and it feels completely rational. I don't know how that could possibly be misconstrued as him being a lazy and negligent husband.

Sanji Joestar

🤷🏾‍♂️it do be like that. Trolling can get distracting I guess.

Sanji Joestar

Yep First Nami appeared and he said nope i'm not moving then fell on the ground taking a nap. When he heard Nojiko say '' Nami's story '', he left lol.

hussam abdelalim

It is literal translation, "hara" is stomach "kiri" cut, also note luffy says "haraheta" when he is hungry, and if you separate it will be stomach and empty, The funny one here is zero's move "onigiri" because "rice ball" separated can be, "demon" and "slice" , Japanese puns are fun 😁

Sanji Joestar

Nami's Pinwheel tattoo serves a similar purpose as the Sun Tattoo and I love that

EDIT: I'm sorry for the essay - this comment was intended to be like 1/3 of its lenght... lol __________ I really like the Japanese original words when Fukaboshi is asking Fish-men people to move on and try to reach for their dreams from zero again. The translation says: "You probably are not going to be ready for the World Summit in 2 years [...]". It sounds alright but I would say it sounds more like they maybe can't shake their fear until then or make it with collecting signatures or just the preparations in general. But what he actually says is more poetic (that's why I love this language): "Until the World Summit in 2 years, your hearts may probably not make it / may probably not be ready yet [...]" Which gives clearer meaning that they need time to mourn, get their anger under control, shake off the fear and move on from the accident (murder?). That they need time to process all the happenings and their own emotions and thoughts to be ready to trust in this dream again. The difference seems insignificant but for me it distinguishes between getting yourself ready intentionally (translation) and having time to become ready subconsciously (the original text). In the first case, it comes across as you having to be the person that makes the decision and moves on. Like you need to sort out your feelings and change mindset. In the second case, the emphasis in more on the heart (or mind, since 'kokoro' in Japanese means both) behaving on its own regardless of what we think. That time heals wounds and what the Fish-men need is that exact time to be able to move on. That's why Fukaboshi decides to destroy remaining signatures - to reset things and give the people a chance to decide on that all over again, so its not against their current will. The heart feels things on its own, regardless of what we might be thinking (it often responds to our subconsciousness, trauma etc.). It's well shown on the King Neptune's behavior - in his head he understands Otohime's mindset and ideals but his heart is full of anger and thoughts of revenge. We need time for our feelings, our hearts, to move on. Even if we understand the situation or have different needs and wants than what it makes us feel. Btw, I really like and respect Fish-men. They are depicted as very thoughtful, peaceful race. In the little tidbits on the normal people we can see, in current times and in the flashbacks, they are all (of course except for pirates and other scoundrels) full of compassion, love. They are forgiving, sometimes innocent (in their simple wish to live under the real sun). They are made to forgive and move on from hurtful events multiple times and often need only the little trigger (like Otohime's support) to do so. They stand before this choice multiple times and almost all of them decide to take the peaceful path (even the former slaves). It's unbelievable how good they are and how big their hearts are... I wonder if it's because Fish-men are 5 times stronger than normal people, that their hearts are stronger as well.

Agreed. People often miss the small clues on Sanji's character. I did the same and only started to notice them on re-watching certain things. I love him so much more than at the beginning of my OP journey. Sanji seems like another macho man (rival to Zoro) - decisive, harsh, strong. And he is but inside he's such a softie. He always picks up on other people's emotions and sympathizes with others easily. He could even be considered a bit of tsundere: he says harsh words but then immediately goes into the kitchen to cook for them. 😂 I loved the scene on the train with Franky and Usopp, also noticed it. He respects the events that happened and calls Usopp his former friend, then immediately gets mad discovering that the other guy is Franky who beat Usopp up and gets revenge for him lol. Then humors Usopp when he sends his collegue Sogeking instead of himself into battle, recognizing immediately he's too conflicted to face them himself. I also love the scene in Arlong Park arc, when Sanji yet again instantly recognizes that there is something off about Nami's intentions, that she behaves contradictory to her emotions and that she's lying. Or how he always gets worried about Zoro despite butting heads with him all the time. Since Zoro is one of the strongest members (probably 2nd strongest in the crew), others always rely on him. They will support him of course, worry about him, try to help etc. But Zoro puts himself in harms way constantly, forcing himself to overcome fights and survive wounds that would kill a normal person. Sanji is the one who is always on the lookout for him, worrying about him dying, getting lost (lol) etc. He's the one who is trying to share his burden and with whom he can talk about serious issues because he notices them (like "nothing happened" scene). Both trying to protect the other crew members, even their innocence, so precious. There is more scenes like that. Sanji's a person who I would put in the dictionary next to the word 'empath'. Have no idea what this word's definition is but I suspect it means being a Sanji of the Strawhats.

Matthew Gilroy

Why would I spoil if the reasoning hadn't been revealed up to that point?😂

Matthew Gilroy

Love the Bellmere / Otohime parallels

Matthew Gilroy

Shirahoshi and Nami are very similar

Oussama Essamadi

Sanji really jumped off the deck there for a moment lol. Luffy not giving two Fs over Jimbei's bit is crazy considering the length Jimbei went for Luffy during the whole war debacle.

Sanji Joestar

That wasn't directed at anyone in particular Multiple people made the same type of comments, even in midst of arguing, just pointing that out

incinə

It's not about that, it's the same deal with what happened at Cocoyashi when Nojiko was explaining Nami's past and he left for a walk. Lindsay said it perfectly. He doesn't care about people's pasts, especially when he needs to fight for a friend in the present. All he needs to do is take a look at the current situation and act accordingly. A friend asking for help is enough motivation for his simple mind to fight all out against whatever the issue is, and a backstory won't change that for him.

incinə

I can't believe I never made the connection. Amazing.

Oussama Essamadi

I was making a sarcastic statement but cook mate 😭

incinə

That was sarcastic? I never could have seen the sarcasm in that comment T-T

Matthew Gilroy

Agree with EOussama. Luffy should have definitely listened to Jimbei here. This is a lot different then a character's backstory. This is a long history of an oppressed race. Jimbei literally has requested Luffy not to fight Hordy. Luffy needs to understand that he can't punch his way through to end racism. Nevertheless Hordy needs to be defeated here so that the World Summit plans can hopefully go through

Matthew Gilroy

@incinə 1) this "friend" is asking Luffy not to fight Hordy though😂 2) this is not the same situation as a simple character backstory like Nami's. This is a long history of an oppressed race👍🏽

Artemis

I disagree. Luffy is always going to be luffy regardless of how immportant or deep the subject matter is. He prioritizes his bonds with others and immediate actions over dwelling on past events or complex explanations. This doesn't mean he's oblivious to the past, but rather that he's not fixated on it, as he trusts his instincts and focuses on solving the present problem. He doesn't need to understand the intricacies of a situation's history to know what's right or wrong. There will come a time where he will be more atuned to the world around him but I think this characteristic of him is what makes him really unique and oda has even played off of this archtype in a big way during Cocoyashi village arc.

Stick Haul

i disagree. i think it's important to the overall themes of one piece that luffy can easily choose the right course of action by simply looking around. oda is a genius at creating complicated circumstances that are cut through like butter by luffy going "that guy who fed me when i was hungry is crying because of you." the background is irrelevant to him because the consequences are in front of him. jimbei is a pretty smart guy with a lot of background, and hasn't really spent any casual time with luffy; i read his attempt at clueing luffy in and framing it like a powder keg about to blow is the setup for the punchline that luffy always accidentally does exactly the right thing by instinct

Gobbo

He's the SUPER FEELER

Matthew Gilroy

I know Luffy will always be Luffy. Doesn't mean I can't dislike his action of sleeping through Jimbei's telling of his people's history and being vulnerable and breaking down and crying

Fweaboy

a black clover reaction would go crazy

Cheddah Slammer

I think the whole point, is that none of the backstory really matters to Luffy because, Luffy already see's Jimbei as his friend. He's going to fight for that reason alone, so none of the backstory would have changed his mind, because for Luffy, when your doing bad things you bad, and when your doing good things your good. Luffy doesn't understand the complexity of Racism, for him he's going to beat up Hordy just because he's doing bad things to Jimbei's country. If the people get mad at him afterward for that he doesn't care because he's a pirate.

Cheddah Slammer

I think Sanji was still trying to defend Nami here, so I still respect him for that.

unlucker

he's always stupid when women are involved

incinə

Yea I'm not saying it's the same situation, but the parts that are relevant to my point should be clear. The history doesn't matter to him, he will look at the current situation and decide based on that. The circumstances being different doesn't change that. The fact that he's asking not to fight Hody is a good point though, but all I wanted to really get at is how Luffy isn't interested in the backstory.

Dreamknight942

I really like Sanji, and I totally agree with your take. I think it just took me aback first time I saw it, especially as Jinbei had just explained the nuanced circumstances that led to it. I like how protective Sanji is usually, I just found this occasion a bit much lol even if he had offered to fight jinbei instead or chastised him in another way it wouldn’t have sounded so bad. It was just random, I never expected Sanji to suggest someone off themself, even if it was just a test.
