'' Well, that's how you are. '' Those words alone... When Luffy met Sanji, he didn't even taste his cooking when he decided he will become his crewmate. It doesn't matter how tasty the cooking is, it's the heart that matters. And to Luffy, a heart big enough to always satisfy the hungry. The food isn't tasty because it's a 5 star meal by a top trained chef. It's delicious because Sanji made it. And cooking is one of the greatest acts of love. Knowing each person intimately and closely enough to understand their wants and needs and provide for them at every request, everyday. (I loooove the detail of Sanji's sleep schedule being 0am to 4am. Waking up one hour before any other Straw Hat besides Brook. Because he has to make food for all of them.) Luffy's growth from the Robin/Usopp situations shines so brightly. He didn't make hasty decisions, he just waited and trusted in his friend. Waiting to say what they really want (in Sanji's case, he needed a little push shaped like a fist 😭).

To this day this is in my top 5 episodes of One Piece, so good. I think Carson hit the nail on the head regarding Sanji kinda be retraumatized by being close to his family and getting stuck in his old mindset. It shows that even though Sanji managed to escape all that, find a role model and parent in Zeff, make great friends in the Strawhats, and found the courage to chase his dreams, there was still always a part of him that viewed himself as a worthless failure. I think back to Thriller Bark when he tried to step in for Zoro sacrificing himself for the crew. He said something along the lines of "I've always been ready to sacrifice myself for everyone", almost like he subconsciously decided that of all the people on the crew he was the most replaceable. Speaking of Thriller Bark, there was a line at the end of his fight with Absalom that kinda stuck with me, though i'm pretty sure it's an anime only line (so not manga canon). When he beat him Sanji said "Beasts should be satisfied with watching women bathe", on the face of it its another dumb perv joke, but with the context we have now I think it reflects on how he views himself a bit. Like during that fight, one of the main complaints people have is that Sanji and Absalom are shown to be similar (and Absalom sucks). Basically I think it's supposed to get across "Beasts like us have to be satisfied with peeping because we dont' deserve true love". Again, I'm like 90% sure that's anime only so just take it as my head canon. But regardless, all that self loathing Sanji harbors just makes Luffy's line hit so well "Well... that's how you are. Don't worry you got us". Makes me cry everytime.

This episode is so good. Luffy's "SAY WHAT YOU REALLY WANT" line hits me like a truck. 9 years ago when my Dad had brain surgery and became disabled, I devoted years of my life to taking care of him and became very antisocial and stopped seeing friends for a long time. That line did a lot for me. It's one of my favourite lines. I'll get it tattooed one day. Also, Katakuri has arrived. One of my favourite characters.

I think part of the reason Sanji wants to save his family (other than the fact that it’d be kinda wrong to knowingly let them get murdered) is that, in the case of his siblings, they can’t change the circumstances of their birth/how they were raised just like him. His brothers were made to be emotionless monsters, they were born to be that way in the same way Sanji was born to be the way he is. None of them had any choice in the matter. Not disagreeing with anything either of you said and you probably intuitively know this already 🧐 If it were ME though, I’d hop on the Sunny and dip tf out of there immediately

I😭🥹 I love this episode so much. Also a lot of people view Robin as the mother figure on the ship and Sanj as a middle child, but to me Saji's always felt like the mama bear of the crew with Robin being more that leather wearing auntie that pulls up to the reunion on a motorcycle, and obviously Nami is big sister all day. But through that perspective, and obviously this is just projection and no one really knows Oda's intent sometimes not even Oda, this arc feels like a single mom that is pulled back into an abusive ex's life and her kids, grown at this point, are now in the position were they have to help take care of their mom, but ofcourse a mother's instinct is sacrifice and the whole time instead of being justifiably selfish for lack of a better word the mother keeps trying to protect her children and her family above all else. But part of the single Mom knows that if she doesn't help the ex through this situation she'll never be able to truly be done with him. She won't be able to move forward knowing she acted on feelings of who she used to be and not who's she's grown to become. All it took was her kids being there for her and demanding she treat them as equals now, not just children to be coddled. A hard lesson for any loving mother I imagine.🥹
