I suppose this counts as one of the few canon instances where we can hear Luffy's thoughts. But you know...I feel like it'd be more in character for Luffy to keep speaking normally even if no one could hear him. This gives the false impression that he knows how ears and sound work.

Idk how it is in the manga, but in this episode nearly all the dialogue is everyone just thinking it in their heads because of the earplugs. Unless they're in pain or shouting their named attacks, no one's mouth is moving during any dialogue. Some (like Luffy & Caesar) even used extra body language and gestures to communicate the best they can since they're not speaking and no one can hear them anyway. So we are technically hearing Luffy's thoughts no?

Toei is soooo committed to the Super Sentai theme with Germa 66, I looooove the eye catcher. All the budget went to Shida the kept voice acting to a minimum lol.

Yes, this counts as one of the very few exceptions to the 'not hearing Luffy's thoughts rule', and it makes sense. But this example is anime-only because in the manga Luffy didn't get lines to think. Everyone else however did get thought bubbles while Big Mom was shrieking. (It's only fair to mention Oda also uses thought bubbles in other instances to signify whispering too.) A manga example was ch 84 when Arlong threw Luffy in the ocean with cement shoes right before he passed out. Being underwater is the perfect excuse to use a thought bubble simply for convenience. Another example is ch 526, right after Boa Hancock snuck Luffy into Impel Down and he was crawling on the ceiling. He briefly uses thought bubbles, or maybe whispers, to avoid being heard.

@Veritas Ah okay yeah that makes sense, it's been forever since I read WCI so I couldn't remember. I'm impressed, Oda really sticks to that condition with Luffy as closely as he can.
