Haven't seen Clannad but Tama's kibi dangos are clearly a reference to the story of Momotaro. Taming animals (red dog, blue pheasant, yellow monkey) who become his companions by giving them dangos.

There's a fun play on words between Okobore Town and Bakura Town being so close to each other Baku being the action of eating, (like Wapol's Baku Baku Fruit) And Okobore meaning Leftovers.

You can see that Oda kinda switched up how he wanted the Smile-Fruits to function. In Zou a lot of them were shown to have full control of their animal parts and appendages, including activating and deactivating them at will Now here in Wano they're more like freak mutations that are present all the time, and the ones with complete animal heads like Holdem are even semiautonomous

Don't know about that, I think it just follows the normal Oda logic, were the stranger you are the stronger you are. Hence why the cooler smile users we saw in Zou were just troop types, while here their higher positions but just weird looking.

I would agree with that if we ever saw those Zou types again in Wano, but we don't really. They're pretty much gone and only seen during Zou despite every variety of Kaido's henchmen being present here

The Toei Bat-man power up is outrageous. I am typically a One Pace hater but, I don't blame anyone for switching to it after seeing that nonsense

Out of the entire wano story, these episodes is where the pacing slows down quite a bit. But what makes it enjoyable is the world-building. Honestly, I’d much rather explore the lawlessness and survivability in Okobore Town than watch Big Mom scream 'Wedding Cake!' while the Straw Hats just run away for over ten episodes. At least early Wano is actually showing us the grit of the world, how the people survive under Kaido's rule, and the stark reality of the land. It’s a slow burn, but it has substance.
