Letsgoooo Thanks for reacting to this

''Scarless Luffy doesn't exist, he can't hurt you'' Scarless Luffy:

Bizarro Garp: It's great to be a Pirate !!

Oda often describes Luffy as a character of his own, doing things even he can't control lol. This first draft feels a bit more different and less 'airhead' but clearly the core is still there.

지원

lol i kinda like this ep

It's nice to get watch of these episodes every once in a while! Would love to get some one off reactions to some of the other special episodes interspersed like this!!

Maaan, it’s sooo interesting seeing this supposed “draft” of One Piece, like peeking into a young Oda’s mind in retrospect and trying to make links with all the ideas he was juggling and whatever he fleshed One Piece up to be.

This Luffy definitely feels a bit more perceptive than ours. It would be really interesting to see how he would have commanded his crew

So "One Piece" is actually the 3rd iteration, and this special episode adapts Oda's 2nd draft of Romance Dawn. The actual First Draft of Romance Dawn, which I have a physical copy of to verify, was like so: --Luffy has no scar, like this ver 2. --Hat from Shanks, there's no Garp, nearly identical to One Piece. --Luffy was in a boat alone by chance and attacked by a shark when Shanks saved him and scared the shark. --The Gum-Gum Fruit had no weird design but was said to grow only twice a century. --The villain is a powerless pirate named Crescent Moon Gary/Gally who loses twice (He makes 2 cameos in One Piece and one in the Live Action, and may have inspired Whitebeard's mustache). --The Nami equivalent (identical face) is a swordswoman named Silk with a ponytail. She was adopted by a loving town after being abandoned as a baby by the pirate that attacked them. She hates pirates. --Luffy's exact speech about Peace-Mains and Morganeers started here. --Luffy starts the chapter with a boat with 4 flags from his Morganeer victims and ends the chapter with 5 flags looking for Peace-Mains to recruit. The epilogue jumps forward to him grown up with a ship and crew.

This shows the importance of editors and the collaborative process, yes men are terrible for creativity

My favorite gag is still Luffy talking to Silk about Shanks and she mentions his name ''Red Hair Shanks'' and Luffy's like '' How do you know he has red hair ? " 😭

Skele

This is technically One Piece's "pilot episode"

Damn, I love this animation style for One Piece. I think it's the most perfect for the show. I wish they would have stuck to it. I love the wano and current styles but this gives that nostalgic water color feel but modernized. I thought that The One Piece was going to have this kind of style.

I think the reason why people get upset when you guys talk about the one piece being "the friends along the way" type story is because i don't think anyone really thinks that the one piece is 'gold and riches' treasure. Both in the main story and in this version, characters mentioned that their treasure is not something that monetary but rather just something or someone that they find valuable (Luffy's hat, Zoro's sword from Kuina, Sanji's hands etc.) So the one piece could be a real treasure but just not gold, jewellery etc.

Oda began working on a pirate manga when he was like 17 or 18, at first it was only rough sketches and ideas. When he was 19 he started working as an assistant to the Rurouni Kenshin mangaka, where he worked on his pirate manga on his off time. He drew a one-shot chapter (basically a first draft), which got published in WSJ. The readers liked it, so he made another one, with a changed story (basically his second draft), and the readers liked that as well. This episode adapts that second draft. So WSJ gave Oda the chance to make an actual series/full-blown story and Oda started working on One Piece, which started publication in 1997. And here we are in the big 26 still reading and watching the story he created and started working on when he was a teenager.

Capitano

"I'm not going to conquer anything. The one who is the most free is the King of the Pirates." - Monkey D Luffy This quote just perfectly encapsulates Luffy's mindset. To him King of the Pirates isn't a title of power, but a title of freedom.

I typically don't enjoy filler or non canon stuff like the movies or G8, but I really enjoyed this episode, glad you two chose to watch it!

Zoodinger

Interestingly the Live Action is a bit more similar to this. They make it way more explicit that there are "good" and "bad" pirates and that Luffy is one of the good ones. Making it less explicit is a lot better.

Porco

Oda said that the one piece is not friendship and he said he hates that trope

Matthew Gilroy

So Cabin Boy wasn't even originally Luffy's first crew member? Shit's a comedy at this point😂. Cabin Boy has hit rock bottom

You had mentioned in your strike video, you were looking for a show. For an old fan favourite you can always try a sports anime like Kuruko's Basketball or Eyeshield 21. My personal pick is Dr Stone and as it is ending soon (last season started June 25th 2026).

Veritas

I choose to believe Oda lied or is allowed to. The One Piece can be physical with Luffy rejecting it in favor of friendship.
