Larger than life is definitely a way to describe Oden, if anything it's perfect!

Matess

My favorite character in the whole show besides Luffy & Zoro is finally on your screen

Daemedeor

Oden wouldn’t be oden if it wasn’t boiled!

Oussama Essamadi

IT’S SO RESTRICTIVE, NO, IT’S SO EXCITING!!!!!

Sakarael

Never liked Oden, like at all. Really interested to see what you guys will think about him or what kind of conversations you'll be having once the flashback is over.

myridiann

legendary HAREM WAR

idziman

Oden really seems like a Herculean figure, especially with the recounting of his life almost sounding like a myth

Sms187

Watch so much anime that at one point even if you close your eyes when the title comes, you understand what it says😂exactly what happened with Carson here😂

JustEli

not liking oden is crazzy ngl😂 Top 5 characters in the show! But to each their own of course..!

Welcome to PEAK

JoshVPlays

Mr Dude

Strong World on Saturday or Sunday? Please! The movie would be perfect for the weekend.

Rene

Really interested on what they think about the flashbackit is definitly one of the best flashbacks and soooo peak when it came out in the manga. I really loved reading it!

Hisoka

Best OP Flash back and it's not close

Nathan

I have to defend kin'emon from the age gap allegations 😭 he just looks older than he is. He's only a year older than Tsuru. She's 55 and he's 36 (so born 56 years ago)

Veritas

If I recall, rerouting a river and fighting a legendary boar are both straight out of Heracles myths. Heracles was even one of the Argonauts, and we know Oden travelled too. Man's a One Piece demigod.

Matthew Gilroy

Weirdly an often common reaction to good characters and writing is not liking it. In One Piece it happens with Skypeia, with Fishman Island, with characters like Momonosuke, Oden, Otohime and so on. And just within stories in general. People are afraid of complexity, and a sense of real-lifeness that often envokes the complex nature of humanity, (messiness, contradiction, grunginess, for examples). A lot of people prefer stories that are more "sanitised", perfect, and "manufactured" in a sense. Take Soul Society vs Fullbring from Bleach. Yorknew vs Chimera Ant. Re Zero season 3 vs prior seasons (You'd be surprised how many people were saying season 3 was their favourite season). The very last arc of JJK Season 1 and the almost too real, grungy tone of the 1st half of Season 3 (Yaga's death just like that. Mai's death almost abruptly after. The explanation of the Culling Games' rules. Kenjaku dream scenes. The plot and flow was not perfectly clean. It felt like real life.) vs the much more clean structure and plot of the Shibuya Incident. Your Skypeias and Fishman Islands vs your Enies Lobbys and Marinefords

lets fucking goooooo

Matthew Gilroy

That's why I'm not a huge fan of the end of Act 2. Similarly to the 2nd half of Whole Cake (minus the very final episode of that arc) it felt too clean and perfect for my liking. I much prefered the beginning of Act 2 where everything felt so lived in. But everyone has their preferences

Capitano

Kinemon might look a lot older than Tsuru but he's only one year older than her. Now he's 19 years younger, because he made a 20 year old timejump.

Sakarael

This is a wild amount of psychoanalysis to draw from somebody simply saying they don't like one character. Not liking Oden does not mean I'm "afraid of complexity" or contradiction, messiness, or "real-lifeness" and framing disagreement that way comes across as incredibly pretentious and gatekeepy. You're basically turning a difference in opinion into "people who disagree with me just can't handle complex writing." I also don't agree with the underlying logic here. A character being flawed, contradictory, messy, or unpleasant does not automatically make them well written. Those qualities can contribute to good characterization, but they can also be handled badly. Likewise, a relatively straightforward or idealized character can still be extremely well written. "This character has complexity" and "this character is well written" are two completely different claims. Also, if you're going to make this broad argument about people supposedly rejecting "complexity" in fiction in favor of“sanitized” stories, it’s a little funny that literally every example you give is WITHIN anime. But what exactly does “sanitized” even mean? Cleaner plotting? Less moral ambiguity? Less psychologically realistic characterization? Because if so, then anime is by default an incredibly "sanitized" mass-medium compared to many other stories. I don't like saying this, but I often feel like I have to. I'm close to finishing my master's in history and literature. I spend a fairly substantial amount of my time reading about and analyzing complicated, contradictory human history and writing. I’m perfectly capable of engaging with complexity and good writing without needing One Piece to teach me that people can be messy. Skypiea is in my top-5 OP arcs of all time. I just don't like Oden at all, his character as well as his writing, and I don’t particularly like many parts of Wano. You’re free to disagree with that, obviously, but inventing a "fear of complexity" in people who don't share your opinion is not an argument for why the character is good. It just makes the whole thing sound condescending.

@Sakarei seriously don't pay any attention to Matthew Gilroy, he lives to rage-bait people just watch every comment he makes to every video. His only enjoyment in these comments is to make himself feel superior. I also don't like Oden by the way, one of my least favorite characters and that doesn't even mean he's not well written. You can also dislike well-written characters.

LaDarius

I also don't like Oden, for me it's his personality. But I do like his role in the story overall, and his impact on certain people. But that's about it. imo he's a little overrated in terms of character and arguments that deal with powerscaling

Monkey bing bong

Yeah. Oden sours this entire flashback for me.

Nicolas LeBlanc

Did you watch the movie? When will it be released?

Sammy

Kinemon was only 1 year older than Tsuru at this time. In present day she's now 19 years older than him: 55 to his 36.

Leighton

Oden, one of the few large OP characters that doesn’t suffer from little leg syndrome

Matthew Gilroy

Sakarael, Apologies, I should have clarified my comment wasn't really in response to your opinions on Oden. Earlier in the day I had been thinking about stories in general and those points I made had crossed my mind. I used your comment as a way to share my reflections about stories in general with anyone who'd may see it. Your dislike of Oden had nothing to do with my reflections about stories.

Matthew Gilroy

BTlmelesS, the amount of bullshit spewing from your mouth could feed a family of flies through their generations. "He lives to rage-bait people just watch every comment he makes to every video. His only enjoyment in these comments is to make himself feel superior." You're making your subjective feelings come off as objective claims. Go through my comments. That's the objective evidence. And the evidence proves you to be wrong, and a pussilanimous
