The big shadow thing was one of the Numbers of Onigashima. Which appear to be giant Oni like beings. We saw them once in shadow earlier when Kaido's forces were gathering for the present.

As I interpreted Kaido's action: he wanted to see if Oden's son has a metal to grow up and take vengeance against Kaido. I think if he saw that Momo is not afraid at that moment, he would have took him out of the castle and spare him. But Momo been a little kid showed fear and Kaido decided Momo doesn't have what it takes to challenge Yonko, so he thrown him back to the fire.

I don't think that Kaido did not want to do it, he just seemed disappointed that the son of the Guy who managed to wound him is this small crybaby. He propably expected someone similar to Oden, maybe someone he could recruit or re-live his fight with.

The thing that grabbed Cat Viper and Dogstorm was one of the Numbers. We saw them before entering the flashback back in episode 955 (although only in silhouette).

Yea they are right I tried to make it less clear in my comment but they do mention them as Numbers and they look just like Oni when they are first introduced.

Again I encourage you to go back to the episode where the old woman caused Oden to lose by turning into Momo. They give you a long look at Kaido's expression and it's very telling.

I think kaido not killing momo is just the typical villain cliché "hah, you're not even worth getting killed by me!"

A sneaky developing theme in One Piece is the outcome of noble sacrifice for the sake of love, which dates all the way back to Bellemere getting herself killed to save Nami and Nojiko. Arlong says "Die with your pathetic love". Kaido is the opposite end where he believes all that noble sacrifice stuff is bullshit and not real strength. It's fake strength that the weak cling to to feel strong and empowered when the love they fight for is such an exploitable weakness. And then there's Dragon who has made every effort to separate from family and love.

It's funny you liken Kaido to Bellamy, because I actually think he's more like Luffy when he raids Kuri to see Momo. After everything he's witnessed with Oden firsthand and everything he's heard since coming to Wano and he decides to see what this "Son of Kozuki Oden" must be like, only to discover he's some sniveling child that's parroting a royal legacy rather than his own dream. I probably would have lost interest too

Smiles are pretty new. Remember Punk Hazard was under Vegapunk's supervision until 4 years ago. Then Cesar came back after the explosion he caused and used the remaining functioning lab to create SAD and make his deals with Kaido. While scamming Big Mom on the side with failing experiments on gigantism.

At the start of Dressrosa there is a moment when Momonosuke gets spooked and we see a hand appearing and the words "what is your name" being called. It's a foreshadowing to this.
