Hey Duffer 1! Yeah Duffer 2?

It's been three years and two Bonsignore babies since the end of season 4, and now the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is here to either blow our minds or make us wonder why we did this for a whole decade.

The gang's all here: Millie Jonny Bon Jovi, Sarah Connor, and of course... wait sorry, did Schnapp hit the gym??

Here's hoping for the best season yet, otherwise it's all Upside Downhill from here...

Guest: Miles

"we've got goopany" 😭😭

I'm in the minority that loved the finale and balled my eyes out the whole time, but I definitely agree there's some major flaws. I feel like a lot of the adult viewers are the ones that are the most disappointed because a lot of my enjoyment in this came from the fact that I grew up with the show whereas older viewers don't have that sentimental aspect quite as much. The end credits really hit me hard with Heroes playing and showing all those nostalgic scenes from the whole series. I was literally 9 years old when this show started and now I'm 19 and in college. I can remember where I was and what my life was like when every new season came out, so I think this finale fully played on those emotions that come from growing up. I also didn't care for El much, but I still cried my eyes out when she died partly because of the great acting from the other characters but also because it was just a reminder of all of this ending and it felt like closing such a huge chapter in life. I think for people who didn't literally grow into adults and watch their whole lives change while watching this show, the finale would be more of a let down. I think they should've killed off some other characters or done literally anything to make it way more emotional for viewers that aren't going to be as sentimental about it as I was.

Steevn Sonder

Audibly gasped at you guys getting those hats that’s amazing! Wish the finale was too…but ya’ll are!

noahsvidz

the 'why didnt you tell me that while I was alive' comment absolutely killed me 😭

Molly Thompson

It's the duffers fault for overhyping themselves, in my opinion, they set the bar too high

jessica pattinson

the unfortunate MCU-ification of stranger things :(

jessica pattinson

btw the ring hopper proposed with is literally the exact ring jonathan had in the goop room so hop probably picked it up while els little magic friend was bleeding out in the next room

Brandon Michael

I honestly think the biggest issue with this season was the wait. This season comes out a year after 4 the general audience has the events fresh on the mind and you feel way more connected to the characters and the threat of vecna. Than focusing so much on Holly feels like something new rather than something taking away from all the other cast members. Vecna not being as present of a villain makes sense because we just saw last season where he was killing everybody. the final still fumbled with the epilogue but people would have felt way better about the long wrap up if we didn't wait 4 years for the action packed promise that was this season. Hope that made sense.

friends? no! best friends! soooooooooooooooo fucked up omg lol and poor vickie she just learned monsters exist like 24 hours ago and everyone's treating her like an inconvenience LOL

moose tracks

I agree cutting to black in the middle of steve falling, just to cut immediately back to him being picked up, is hilarious!!!!! I also fundamentally hate the idea that everyone can open their window to leave henry's trance anytime they want if they just concentrate enough??? like what??? feels like such a retcon for the final season so they don't have to get all the children's favorite songs etc lol

moose tracks

It's honestly such bad directing and acting for these ~emotional~ dialogue scenes to be so slowwwwwwwww during such an insane crisis! it would be so much more impactful if it was faster paced and action driven, and honestly we fucking know that El loves Hop and he's a dad to her, we learned NOTHING from that boring dialogue

moose tracks

robin legit useless lol if this is all theyre gonna do with her they shoulda just sent her to college

BewareTheGrayGhost

I'm honestly not all that shocked about no main characters dying. The Duffers have said it's never been "that sorta show" and I agree with them, mainly because they're cowards, haha. Steve is set to die in the first season, but they like Joe Keery too much and pull back from it. From that point onward, every season needs to introduce a new lovable YET disposable character (Bob Newby, Alexei, Eddie) as an excuse for not having the gall to kill off any actual main character. Probably the Duffers' biggest weakness as creatives, IMO. Going into the finale with expectations of everyone having, at worst, a bittersweet ending softened my opinion on it, I think. Also, Miles' "El Camino" joke might be my favorite joke on any Stranger Things track. So good.

smrithi

why did schnapp act better than finn 😭

Edward Tapia

Wait Eric did you watch the episode prior to this commentary? I notice you said "this wasn't in the highlights" at one point so it made me confused. I know these are commentaries and not reactions but they come off like first watches, maybe I'm wrong haha

FlexLuthor22

After they kill Vecna and the Mind Flayer, it should have been a race to get back to Hawkins before the Dussy implodes. What a tone deaf mess of a finale. It's been so much fun watching along with you guys for all these years.

Teagan MB

Sad that my favourite character didn't get a proper send off. That of course being the huge Tiger poster in the Wheeler's basement

Arthur Edington

Mike saying "no, not friends, Best friends" is so stupid because it implies he and will weren't best friends when season 1 he was the most worried about Will

Struan Robertson

make the episode 2 hours 30 mins, cut the near 50 minute epilogue down to 30 mins, add a sequence after the monster/vecna fight with the mindflayer in it's true form or whatever, demos etc. in a a chase from the abyss through the upside down or something. Just feels like an hour of content then an hour of wrap up.

lulu boo

can you guys add a timestamp in the comments for when we are meant to press play? i’m so confused, you told us to press pause but im seven minutes in and have no idea what you’re reacting to bc you never said to press play 😭😭😭 am i just stupid?

Cam Silas

I think when Kali was giving us that flashback that had the pregnant ladies there, that was an unknown amount of time ago cause that was just the first time she tried to escape. And all those ladies were like 9 months pregnant and dying from kali’s blood already so I had personally assumed all those ladies and their babies were dead already by the time El and Hopper found Kali in the lab

HoeMalone

I thought it was good lol. I was surprised to see the backlash. But thats show biz baby.

Cam Silas

Why do you guys hate El so much 😭 it hurts

Cam Silas

Goop stocks are up 4000% after this commentary track

Cam Silas

i'm shocked you guys were so against the epilogue!!! I think it was a great wrap up to all these characters that we've spent so many years with. I'm more than okay with no one dying, it didn't really feel necessary. It reminded me of GOTG3 where no one died but it was still great and emotional. Maybe they could've killed Bret Gelman (I wouldn't have minded LOL), but these characters deserved happy endings. I loved how they handled El's ending - it reminds me a lot of inception where the ending is really up to whatever you want to believe. I guess I can understand y'all not enjoying the longer epilogue since you're not really connected to the show or the characters though. Definitely don't think the finale was a "dud" by any means. I do agree the Duffer Brothers have pretty bad hubris. They were in interviews pre-season saying the DUMBEST shit like "season 5 is going to be 8 movies" when that is just not the case... I did enjoy the season and the finale really stuck the landing to me, but I'd say season 5 ranks at 4th or 5th out of all the seasons - but that's not even much of an insult because I think this show is so great that even it's worst season is no worse than a 7 out of 10. But the duffer brothers were definitely running their mouths a bit too much in interviews for my liking. I do look forward to the highlight video being reposted and possibly a highlight video for the finale because those are always edited so hilariously! Can't wait for 2026 to see you watch shows like OBX end... THAT'S probably gonna make u sob!

Cam Silas

Also this might be confusing but I genuinely think this season gets 5 times better if they cut their episodes differently. I feel like the purposely made the episodes in vol 1 and vol 2 end at weird/unsatisfying moments just so that they could have a 2 hour long last episode and put it in theaters.. I think episode 6 should have ended with Max waking up in Lucas's arms instead of cutting to black and ending the episode right before. I think if they keep the episode going and let us get the satisfaction of Max and Lucas reuniting, it would make the moment between Holly and Max feel less "annoying" because you actually get the pay off of them going through their portals and waking up. Similarly, episode 7 should've kept going and ended with Steve falling off the tower. There's such a long cut to black there like a quarter of the way through episode 8 and for what... Meanwhile your penultimate episode had no great cliffhanger to give us some tension to look forward to. If you end episode 7 at Steve falling off the tower, you give us that and the fact that El/Max/Kali just got to Vecna and the kids... BOOM! That's a great penultimate ending. Then that way we can get right into the action at the beginning of episode 8. El can have her long and emotional conversation with Hopper on the goop roof, Steve and Jonathan can have their little walk and talk conversation all before the big mind flayer action happens, but because that happens at the beginning of this episode it doesn't feel like a halt to the momentum of any of the action. Sorry this is so long and might not make much sense LOL it's just something I've been thinking about.

witch's brew

I follow one of Joyce stunt doubles. and she said because it was the last season they were just giving things away. So I'm not surprised the bullys got their hats. Also, the stunt double has a tik tok of her making key chain of Joyce's axe. She gave tons of them away for the larger cast party then made ornaments for the smaller cast party of intimate cast and crew.

witch's brew

They revealed Jostens made the gowns. And they couldn't be green because the head of costuming said "the green would clash with the grass". Because the orange seems quite the 80s cliche choice.

Daniel Reyes

love how often you guys have theories for things that were clearly explained but you weren’t paying attention lmao (no shade actually one of my fav parts of these tracks)

imsoblander

I CANNOT believe the 13 Reasons Why finale was turned out wayy more emotional and satisfying than the ST finale. we've fallen so far

Bryanna

Noah held his book a little longer than the rest bc he probably won’t have another job after this

Grace Elsie

Everything about this finale has turned me into season 1 Joyce, like I feel legit crazy watching all the fan theories and giving myself hope that there is something more. But in my heart of hearts I know, it was just bad writing with too much plot armor and too many loose ends.

Susana del Mar

I'm telling you Eric, I hope you're still in LA cause you're gonna have to record one more ST commentary!!!

Selma Wilkerson

Jonathan is at NYU so surely he graduated high school 😭

Jake Jones

Please consider doing a commentary for the Season 5 BTS documentary airing in a few weeks lol.

Hunter Black

Will there be a Commentary on the "Real but not Real" 9th Episode? (If it is in fact real lmao)

Jonathan Moncada

So glad you guy got the hats! I'm happy this is all finally out. On the 12th Netflix is releasing a documentary about the making of. This production was the biggest I've ever seen and very intense for everyone working on it. -- On a side note this was not MY favorite season as a fan. I rank them 3, 1, 5, 4, 2.

brin

I watched it on Netflix before I was supposed to go to the movie theaters. Hated it so much I just didn't go 😭

Georgia

Did anyone else notice the guy with a camera sitting in the bleachers during the graduation wearing a DUFFERS tshirt!

lau

the fact that you guys pointed out so many “comformitygate” theory points without knowing what it is… 😭 goes to show that the fans could vision a better ending than the duffer brothers

lau

I LOVE that you thought the finale was ass too

Olivia Kurima

Watched this having never watched a single episode or commentary track for Stranger Things and I think it was the right call

Abby Mason

It's so funny because when I first watched this episode, I was balling my eyes out just because it was the end of the show (same feeling I had with 13RW too) and now I'm just laughing through the commentary track at how much you did not give a shit. In all seriousness, it's really cool to have watched this show with y'all for so long and I'm gonna miss Duffer 1 and Duffer 2 and Tiger Pride--but Tiger Pride never really goes away, does it?

catpie

joined the patreon for a 2 hour goopcast and i wouldn't have it any other way

Niya Thomas

Now knowing this episode was filmed without being completely written is so fucking hilarious. You can tell when it starts to fall apart

Hannah

Why did Nancy turn into Steve in the epilogue

honor

finally got around to watching this and it made me laugh how much you guys hated nancy's new look because every lesbian i know lost their fucking minds at it. goop on, brothers!

Alix McKnight

Stranger Things sits in such a strange place in my heart. I LOVE things about it, but I am so disappointed by other parts. I love the characters. I love a lot of the actors. I love the settings. I love the concept. I love how the show looks in general. But I get so disappointed by large parts of the plot, including the vagueness of the ending. Also, I watched something super interesting on YouTube the other day regarding Winona Ryder and her reason for taking the part of Joyce. If anyone is curious, it's called "Winona Ryder Breaks Silence On Real-Life Tragedy Behind Stranger Things".
