Ooooh little white Mike…

Almost a decade ago, Pennywise emerged from the sewers to terrorize Mike from Stranger Things, and then returned to do it all over again after he became a man! Andy Muschietti's take on Stephen King’s IT may have been a lot of fun to see in theaters, but do both movies still hold up 27 years later? Okay maybe more like 8 years later.

Before diving into the recent prequel series, I enlisted the help of my favorite scary movie companion Kevin for his first experience with the dancing clown to find out if these movies warrant being almost five fucking hours long in total or if maybe we coulda just skipped em.

On a very rare serious note, all the love in the world to James Ransone. He graduated the arts high school I went to about a decade prior to me. The teachers that knew him loved him. To see him go on to kick ass in a big budget adaptation of one of my favorite books was a dream come true.

I actually have never seen this movie because i don't like horror and didn't love the first movie. I didn't watch welcome to derry until after the 4th episode aired lol. So this will be my first time watching this. Now, unrelated, i assume as a lover of film you're intimately familiar with the shining?

We starting Derry this Monday? 👀

The book at a certain point starts transitioning from the 50s to the 80s in the middle of characters sentences. Like their older self starts the sentence and younger self finishes it or vice versa.

i actually don't think they filmed the kids at the same time (maybe you realize this in the track?) bc there's some pretty noticeable de-aging and dubbing on the kids (mainly eddie/richie/ben) bc they hit puberty between filming movies lmaooo 💔

Oh hell yeah man I’ve been waiting for this day… can yall watch chapter 1 too? Would love a new modern reaction to that from you Eric

Krista

A big reason the movies are never as scary as the books is because the scariest character is Patrick hockstetter and both the adaptations were too scared to actually use him

The constant mentions of Richard Simmons being in the tv series, meanwhile, he's been dead for almost two years now has me screaming lmao 😂

staticstruck

i desperately need someone to take away andy muschietti's after effects subscription thanks

Ok having finished the movie, it's actually crazy how much closer the show's tone is to this part rather than the first one. It is about 45 minutes too long though, and the letter at the end seemed kinda toxic tbh but whatever lmao

Matty1003

Totally agree with you about Muschietti directing Batman, I don’t think he’s the right choice at all. I do however think he’d make a really fun Aquaman movie or something along those lines, one of their more campy characters.

joe shmoe

Lol i can't tell if it's entirely a bit or not, but you do know that a) chapter 1 takes place over most of the summer and they meet Mike towards the start, and b) they still knew each other for several years before going to college? Lmao I think it's a bit but idk if you missed the first movie saying the ending with the blood oath was in September, after seeing the end of the school year in the beginning of the movie

Cant wait for Pretty Much IT: Welcome to Derry

So I'm a fan of King's books (would love its you covered some more of his movies) and its hilarious your joke about Stephen king playing himself. In one of his biggest series The Dark tower (soon to be a tv series by Mike Flanagan), King actually shows up as himself as a character in some of the later books. Cause, and this might be good to keep in mind going into Welcome to Derry, all of King's books take place in the same world or in the same greater universe with some taking place in different realities that characters visit. This is more important in Dark Tower than It, but there are still references to other King books movies in Welcome to Derry outside IT

"If I saw Mike calling me, I'd smash my phone." Sad to hear that you guys' relationship is coming to an end, Eric. Who's getting custody of Jake?

talia-blue

can someone give a timestamp for when to press play? i'm confused 😭

perserverantSoul

I’m very excited for you to check out the show now, because without spoiling anything, it really does feel like watching both chapters in reverse order.

fun casting fact: the guy who you thought was Ben in the business meeting scene is actually Brandon Crane who played Ben in the original mini series🎈

I remember being so hyped that the street names were the same from the book. 🤣🤣 Kevin gets it.

You've been joking but I did actually avoid this movie because I REALLY did not want or need to see a realistic gay bashing as a scary scene in a jokey popcorn horror film. The only reason I'm watching it now is for this commentary track and my opinion regarding that scene has not changed at all having now seen it.

while i adore parts of this movie, it felt like the stakes weren’t as high and the scares felt a tad too childish for them as adults. one of the things the book did was showcase how children are - usually - quite easy to scare, because it’s easy for It to take a tangible shape as a clown, a monster, whatever, to feast on them and their fear. adults are harder prey, because their fears are so much more complex. i felt this movie touched on that a little (bill’s guilt over his brother’s death, stanley’s suicide, bev’s/eddie’s trauma cycles, richie’s fear of being outed and internal homophobia). i think leaned too far into the cg monsters (more effective for them as children) rather than amplify those adult fears. i think the best and “scariest” scenes really were the opening attack, bowers’s attacks, seeing bill skarsgård just playing pennywise (w no or limited effects, like under the bleachers), and them being taunted by the head of their dead best friend. i also feel like they kinda sidelined mike again rather than going into his trauma and family history, which was far more horrific than him being considered a “madman,” as pennywise put it. that aside, i still enjoyed this movie and loved your commentary!! it makes rewatching so much more fun to hear other people’s thoughts. super excited to watch your welcome to derry reactions!!!

Marie Lemieux

Quick heads up it looks like chapter two isn’t linked yet on prettymuch.it (anyway when i sort by most recent it says welcome to derry ep1&2, and then IT part one) idk if anyone has told you yet so just in case ! Excited to start the series now !!

Emily

these tracks were so funny thank you for not skipping the movies 🙏

When I saw this in theaters, I hit a dab pen for the first time. It genuinely scared me, but instead of screaming, I couldn't stop laughing. That scary ass old lady had me giggling until we left the theater, but I assure you it gave me nightmares

I was in theater school when this movie came out and every queer person I know LOVED this movie bc they thought Bill Hader being gay was iconic. And everyone in my program would sing "I know your secret" at each other whenever anyone said anything remotely gay (which was often bc obviously everyone was gay)
