Hi Folks!

Bob the Alien comes with a very interesting story that I haven't really talked about until now.

Several years ago, after I moved to Texas, I started a YouTube channel for toddlers. At the time I had a toddler of my own, and I noticed there weren't a ton of videos geared to that very narrow age group.

I named it Bouncing Baby TV.  And I put my heart and soul into it. I also got some help from my kids and wife as voice talents.

At first it had a slow start, but then in 2019 it exploded big time! I was getting millions of views in a single day. Within 6 months I had 5.5 million subs, and 1.5 Billion views.   ...I was told I broke YouTube.

Very excited, I got in touch with YouTube and asked for my Platinum Plaque.  At first they were excited for me, but then the tone changed and I was put on hold.  When they came back they told me that someone would get back to me on this.

They never got back to me.  Instead a short time after they demonetized my channel. 🤯

I was devastated, I kept contacting them and every time they gave me a different ridiculous excuse for why this happened. I even restructured to satisfy some of their requests,  but nope! they wouldn't budge.  A lawyer I spoke to gave me the impression that I would not win this, so I eventually moved on.

I always assumed that with the speed that it grew, YouTube thought I was doing something nefarious to grow. 🤷‍♂️ But I think what was really happening was kids were in control of their parents phones, and my videos were the ones they were repeatedly clicking.

As I'm typing this I know that it all worked out for the best. Having all of the support I get here far exceeds anonymous support of 2-year-olds. 🤣 and I love designing Flexis!

So now for the inspiration.  I created several Bob the alien videos. Here is a Halloween one.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCmqIF7zLc8

Make sure you have really good adhesion since it has small parts.

 15%infill, 3 walls, .12 or .16 layer height

At 200% it can be a finger Spinner

Can be scaled up easily, if scaled down, pencil will not fit and parts could become fragile!!!

Raditive Prints

Braytak

Dan

Oh me too. They turned and off and on again a few times. But I still have the videos up and also on amazon. We worked hard on those :)

Braytak

wheres the Download link?

Chad W.

Am I the only one who can't download from the emails? For the last two days every email download from my various Patreons download links give me this error in the browser on both Firefox and Chrome: Missing query parameter: token-hash The download works directly from Patreon but not from my downloads.

Ivan K

Amazing as usual! Thank you sir.

kaz watts

me too, although tend to avoid links in emails for all sorts of reasons!

kaz watts

Well as a former pre-school teacher, my pupils would have loved your channel! So sorry You Tube didn't support you. However, thank you for the great designs!

Dan

I think the links won't work because it's set to private and you have to have logged in?

Dan

No link. Download files in the post.

Braytak

yea i found it i am just dumb

Chad W.

Possibly, but I'm logged in and they've always worked up until like two days ago, but all Patreon download links from emails I've gotten since then have stopped working.

OMG This one is amazing

So I’ve been pretty in depth with YouTube creating since high school. I’m assuming you got demonetized on YouTube during their whole rework on steering people away from YouTube channels geared towards kids. They did this overall because it became too daunting to regulate what was actually being uploaded. There were so many lawsuits and things happening because there were so many videos/channels out there that were seemingly made for kids and then would have very adult scenes and/or phrases sprinkled in several minutes into the video AND there were also soooooo many channels that were very clearly pushing child labor laws that YouTube decided to basically axe everyone’s ability to make any money from videos that had anything at all to do with kids. This was never explicitly stated or explained to any of the creators so if you weren’t immersed into the “YouTube creator” community I can 100% see why it would come off as directed towards you! But I really, really don’t think it was ANYTHING at all that you did. I think that it was just that enough Karen’s got ahold of enough of those videos posted by malicious people posting very not safe for kids videos that were intentionally posted under the guise of kid-friendly and enough moms and dads had started to exploit the followings their children had earned them that YouTube decided it was in their best interests to no longer provide incentives for this content on their website. This of course also hurt wholesome creators like yourself because you were making actual made for kids content but that was a sacrifice they deemed worth it in the long run. All that being said your videos are super cute and extremely well made! Beautiful work!!! I’m also EXTREMELY excited about a new pencil topper!! AhHHHHhHHhHhHH!!!

Cursed Exotics

My theory, for the linked video in particular, is maybe the costumes used were partly why [copyright characters]? IDK, it was super cute though lol

Jess Spiers

This is absolutely great. About to print one right now to see how it looks.

Mike Wardlow

This is really cool! Gonna see if cant crank a few 200% ones out for a Trunk or Treat event i have tomorrow!

Dan

Thanks Paige, I agree it did all happen at the time that YouTube restructured for kids. in fact, with the changes it's hard for any developer of kids content to make money on YouTube now. I didn't want to get into it above, but I feel another reason was that advertisers were ticked off because their advertising dollars were only going to a select few creators, me being one of them, and they weren't seeing a return. I'm glad you like the topper. I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Dan

HA! my wife always says "when people see this they are going to die!" I tell her "I don't want to kill anyone" 😄

dcheath

OH my! So many things to print and not enough printers!!

Give River

Dear Dan, thank you SO much for sharing this story. Truly heartbreaking. I looked at your channel and it is remarkable. I have a 7 and 5 year myself, and I am blown away by what you produced... The fact that you shared this story with your new community, and that you put an optimistic and encouraging end on an otherwise heartbreaking sequence of events is really encouraging. Thank you so much!!!

Not wanting to spend the resources on regulation was definitely a big part of it, but YouTube was also getting a lot of flack from different jurisdictions about advertising directed at children. Not because they have issues with advertising to children, but because YouTube uses an algorithm to save the viewer's data and serve those ads. Since it's illegal to collect data on children in many places, YT opted to simply demonetize any channel directed specifically at young children. My son's friend had a channel about Minecraft. It got demonetized because a sizable portion of his viewers were children. It wasn't specifically directed at children, but it was good enough for YT.

Chantal

Love it! Pencil toppers are so popular with our customers.

Jes S

Dan, I'm sorry to hear you were treated this way by YouTube. thank you for sharing, and omg Bob is cute as!! i have 5 children and i know that there's not a lot of great stuff out there, it's a shame really but i think you have defiantly found a great way to make the best of life. we love all your designs, and the kids get so excited when a new one is released. my 11-year-old has already claimed the first Bob print. Which I will be starting when one of my printers are free.

Jo

i like to keep an image in my folders with each model :) can you post non-video image or two of this?

Dan

Whoe that's a long link. 😀 doesn't look clickable, I think you will have to paste it into a browser.

Jo

tyvm.

Taylor

i cant find the file?

Draco Socard

oh i need to get started.. last year i 3D printed fidgets and handed them out to the kids who had great costumes, it was a hit

Marti Reusch

I hope we get a snowflake, snowman, or other winter pencil topper this year!

Dan

The spinning mechanism is built in so it should just work.

Grant lonergan

Hey Dan. I love this. And my daughter will love it as a spinner. Is the 200% for an adult finger or a child’s finger?

cobyn

open the post, patreon doesnt show files anymore unless you open the post

Be open to being the villain in your own story

Thanks! I just figured out why mine would not spin. I inadvertently had supports turned on and Cura ran a support between the interior wall and the spinning mechanism. Once I pulled my head out (and resliced it correctly), it prints great and works like a champ!

stuart moppett

Sold out Customers love it have been asked for more pencil toppers

Dan

It fits on my wife, me and older kiddo. Probably would need to make a few sizes based on the child or adult purchasing.

Grant lonergan

No worries. Thanks. I’ll have a play around in the slicer.

Ed Wilts

Absolutely awesome - one of your best designs yet. We printed some smaller ones at 100% for pencil toppers and I designed a quick post to stick them in a flower pot. I printed 3 at 200% - one for myself (I'm a fidgety guy!) and a couple as gifts.

Waffle Beaumont

Would it be possible for you to make a version without the spinner? If it was hollow people could spin it on their finger while it was still small.

Dan

I do not full understand the question. Without the mechanism inside, it would not spin.

2026-09-06 23:00 You have done amazing. My husband and I just saying this, and compared to some of out other designers we support you have provided such a large selection in the last year compared to others. One awesome thing after another.

robert banks

turn file into objects in slicer then delete the middle piece you don't want. i just tried it to confirm

Waffle Beaumont

It will spin without the mechanism. I cut out the internal mechanism from one and can spin it on my pinky, but my other digits are too big and he only gets half a turn lol. Kids have no issue spinning it on their fingers, it just might not spin for as long as the original. Print one without that piece and let your kids try it, you will see what I mean. I can just remove the piece in the slicer for now as Robert suggested. I was thinking if you removed the mechanism you could change the internal geometry and add a small chamfer/bevel on the inside ring. It is 90 degrees currently so kinda rough.

Dan

Thank you for the kind words! I love designing and making a variety of models.

Tatra

i love tis printed a few last night its so cute

Johnny Hull

Dan! This is probably one of my favorite prints yet. It gave me this ‘Monsters Inc’ vibe. I started thinking how cool it would be if you designed your own flexi monsters. I would seriously make separate purchases for those, cause people just seem to love the cute, big-eyed creatures! Either way, congrats on all of your success, I’ll be there to support you as it continues!

Solcutter

That's a sad story about YouTube but greed is at the forefront of our society sadly, you're designs prove your talent I would be very proud like you of your achievements with the children's channel & flexis I wish I was as imaginative as you!

3D Printing4$

Thats rough. YT regularly does that to channels i watch that speak I'll of the ccp. They also unsub their members, myself included several times. You have a sub for life here. Thank you for all you do and all the money you have helped me earn. Also all the kids that see your awesome prints daily. I have about 10 of your XXL skeletons hanging in my store along with 100's of your flexi toys.

Mark Tuttle

The video was great! I have add some small childrens toys to our inventory and it would be great if you had a second line of toys for smaller childer. Monster toys like your spinner would be great.

Dan

Would love to see a pic of your store! Sounds amazing :)
