Alan:

Hello Heroes!

It’s sooooo hot. Maybe I’ll read a book.

What I’m reading!

Lord Hornblower by C.S. Forester: This is one of the lesser Hornblowers, but it’s still a (mostly) nautical adventure from a grumpy Brit’s perspective. So… I’m here for it. I’m such a freaking dad.

What I’m watching!

Lots of new movies! Some of them we’re going to talk about on the show!

The Devil Wears Prada 2: This could so easily have been a re-hash garbage legasequel. But it was actually a really great movie! Honestly, it feels like a faithful continuation of the characters we love, it’s funny, the plot all works. If you’re going to make a sequel, this is the way to do it!

Disclosure Day: Guys. Spielberg’s still got it. I know the third act was divisive. Some people loved it, some hated it. I’m firmly in the loved it camp. I was transfixed. The woman playing the TV news anchor is a revelation. Get used to seeing her, she’s a movie star. Also, all the other performances are top notch. It’s got a couple signature Spielberg set pieces, it’s kinda weird, and a little shaggy. Like, it’s not a Pixar-Perfect-Picture™, and sometimes I want something a little loose.

Shrinking S2-3: Catching up on this show with Megan. It’s cozy. TERRIBLE therapy and therapist/client relationships, but it’s funny and cozy.

What I’m playing!

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag Resync: One of my favorite games of all time remade with ray-tracing and super-improved graphics? Sign me up! I’ll be playing this a lot for… a while.

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

Hello all! How was your July? I'm hoping you're enjoying summer movie season!

WHAT I'M WATCHING:

Minions and Monsters is the funniest movie in this franchise since the first Despicable Me, thanks largely to its unbridled love for classic movies as your favorite little yellow freaks invade early Hollywood. There is still zero plot or character development, but the jokes and homages definitely landed.

Young Washington was decently well-made for what it was. His early life is fascinating, especially his failures as a young commander in the French and Indian War that shaped his later maturity. Not crazy about the use of generative AI (I found out after or I might not have seen it).

Hadestown: this pro-shot of the musical with the original Broadway cast was excellent, engrossing, emotional, and catchy. Limited engagement was well-worth catching with my kids, whose school performed it last year. This version was much better, obviously.

The Odyssey: a masterpiece as far as the wife and I were concerned. Controversy is much ado about nothing. Very well-paced, three hours hummed by. Visually-stunning, great audio (I can actually hear the dialogue, thanks Nolan!), excellent performances, and a surprising amount of humanity.

The Rocky series. Revisiting these at home for the 50th anniversary of the first film. If you've watched our episode on this, you know I adore these movies and this character. Shoutout to the Rocky IV director's cut, which improves on the original to a shocking degree.

WHAT I'M READING: Starting my hardcover of Homers' The Illiad/The Odyssey this week, inspired by my watch of the film. Haven't read it since high school, so I'm excited to revisit!

What have you all been watching and reading?

I am currently reading The Vampire Chronicles series by Anne Rice (Interview With The Vampire). So far its a great read. I will say I feel the television show improved the book for me. Haven't finished it yet but so far a good read. What I'm watching. A lot this month. Project Hail Mary- what a fantastic film. I am not the biggest sci-fi fan but this movie suprised me. It was fantastic and so heartfelt. Honestly it is probably one of my favorite sci-fi films ever. Obsession- what a creepy film. Fantastic low budget horror movie that I think has just wowed everyone including me. It takes a classic idea of a wish and makes it go horribly wrong. The performances from this film espically from Inde Navarraette are just incredible. Im pretty sure we are going to see some big careers from this movie. Cant stop thinking about it. Definitely recommend The Odysessy- I saw this opening night in Imax. It was my first Imax film and I have to say I really enjoyed it. The overall theme of the movie was really good. I will say I dont think it was an amazing adaptation of The Odysessy but as a version of it that was different I thought it was really good. I honestly really enjoyed it and cant stop thinking about it. Top Gun and Top Gun Maverick- I had never seen these films and honestly thoght they were pretty good. I am not the biggest Tom Cruise fan but I has heard Top Gun was a classic. I thought the first one was alright. Great soundtrack. Couldn't stand Tom's character in the first film personally but thought Val Kilmer was fantastic. The sequel I enjoyed as well. I liked the characters a bit better in this one. Also seeing Val Kilmers last performance was very touching and sad. RIP. Overall not bad not my favorites but enjoyable. Cinderella Man- This movie suprised me in the best of ways. Inspired by a true story of a man during the great depression trying to help his family survive by taking boxing matches. A fantastic underdog story that really made me appericate boxing more. Uplifting story that reminds me to be grateful for what I have. It was a very realistic take on the depression. Fantastic film and probably one of my favorite Russell Crowe films. Tv Shows The Vampire Lestat (Interview with The Vampire Season 3)- I must say I liked this season more than Interview With The Vampire season 1 and 2. I feel like no one talks about this show and honestly its incredible. The production, the acting The writing its great. I wasnt expecting to sympathize with Lestat because he is such a monster in the first two seasons. Honestly all the characters are but they are some how a bit relatable in ways. This season did a lot differently narratively but I weirdly liked it. It kind of felt like a rock band documentary at times but kind of a drama at times as well. Sam Reid continues to steal the show. This time he sings as well and I have to say he has a fantastic voice. Honestly really enjoyed this show and looking forward to Queen Of The Damned (Season 4). I really like what these writers and directors are doing with this show and hope we get to see all of the books adapted. Thats all I have been up to this month so far no gaming or a lot of reading but these next few months have a lot of book releases, games, and some movies coming out. I am very much excited for it. Also excited for Fall weather I am over the summer 🥵. Hope everyone is well and has been able to watch, read, and play some awesome stuff!

I'm rereading Halo the Kilo-Five saga and Marcus Aurelius' Meditations. I'm watching Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks. I'm playing Astro Bot, Halo: Campaign Evolved, and God of War Ragnarök. I'm excited for Wolverine and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Adam Bastable

I've begun an Odyssey of my own: a full rewatch of the MCU! Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 are in the bag... Thor is up tonight, which I haven't seen since 2011. All I can remember is my young and impressionable self craving abs like Chris Hemsworth's and the Natalie Portman girlfriend experience.

Lucas Pompey

I'm usually not a Nolan fan, but The Odyssey was incredible. Definitely his best work.

J

Watched the new Avatar last airbender movie, imo very good.

Annie Pallo

I’m reading the “Off Campus” series! I’m reading them out of order, I started with book three, then did book one, now I’m doing book 2. They’re very good! They just made the first book into an Amazon show! I loved it!!

Cael AJ

I tried to go see The Odyssey and it seemed like a good movie, but unfortunately AMC had the volume up so high I couldn't stand it and left after an hour 😞 I will have to see it when it comes to streaming. I have been watching The Sopranos for the last couple of months and am on the final season. I have the most love/hate relationship with it that I've ever had with any show I've intended to finish. I think it's a very good show technically, but I find most of the characters so deplorable that it feels like a chore to watch sometimes. I'm also re-watching all of the Spider-Man movies to prepare for the new one coming out. I just finished the Sam Raimi trilogy. That is my least favorite iteration of Spider-Man, to be honest. And I normally like Sam Raimi movies.

Cael AJ

I can't wait until I have the money to subscribe to Paramount+ so I can watch that. Plus the new Avatar series that's coming out, that will probably be out by the time I subscribe.

I liked that as well. I forgot to put it on my list!

Alan, have you read the Aubrey/Maturin books by Patrick O'Brian? If you love Hornblower, you will absolutely adore those. And oh my God, the characters. They're some of my favorite books lifelong. Jono, I just recently did a rewatch of the first Rocky and was blown away once again by how lovely, simple, and beautifully acted (and written) it is. It's funny that the series got so big, because the first movie is so small in all the best ways. It's seriously such a beautiful film that is filled with this humility -- Rocky thinking he's just this loser, Adrian thinking she's a loser, a nothing -- both of them helping the other to realize how special they are and what they can become. I've been trying to read some funny things because the world is stressing me out right now, and my Dad passed away recently, so it's been a challenging time. So I've been reading (and enjoying) the Murderbot series, and then just finished the latest in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, which was a lot of fun. (I would die for Princess Donut, darn it.) I'm thinking of doing a "Halt and Catch Fire" series rewatch because I remember how much joy I felt it was filled with by the final few seasons. Hang in there, everyone!

Angela D. Mitchell

I love the first four Vampire Chronicles and think they're incredibly strong. The rest didn't hold up as well for me, unfortunately. And the show is amazing! And I loved Project Hail Mary and have rewatched it way too many times. Just so good.

Currently reading: The Girl with a Thousand Faces by Sunyi Dean The Deep by Rivers Solomon My Friends by Fredrik Backman

Oh, how I love Hadestown. I’m thinking of going abroad just to see it live. I’m finishing Katabasis by RF Kuang, it’s great. I feel weirdly attached to the main character, she’s not very likeable but I support women’s rights and wrongs. Started watching The Vampire Lestat, it’s wonderfully unhinged lol I also went to see Harry Styles and re-ignited my belief that people in general are good, and everyone really just want to connect with others, have fun and live in peace. It was magical. In conclusion, July has treated me well :) way too hot though.

I hadn't heard much about the book series but so far its pretty good. Thats a bummer that the books dont go well

SaucyJTB

I'm on book seven of The Expanse. It's so damn good!

Madeleine

Looking forward to tomorrow's Seattle show! Any CT fans going to the show/the Q&A? :)

Summers

Been probably asked before, who loves epic the musical? Anyone had trouble watching the movie without having the songs in their head? 2nd watch of the Oddessey was whrn I was able to truly get into the story without getting distracted. I loved Devil Wears Prada cause it made me feel understood with my insecurities with AI in the industry, without people being patronizing about, "thats were things are going, progress, etcc...." I know that. I just felt ubderstood, and it made me feel a bit braver about it....... P.s. if you ever into anime about AI I recommend Psycho Pass.

Emma Bollans

I’m currently reading Wearing the Lion by John Wiswell- a funny take on the 12 tasks of Heracles myth (topical with the realise of The Odyssey- which I agree was fantastic cinema). I also watched Jackie Chan’s The Drunken Master (1978) last night for the first time and loved it.

Mary Flynn

I watched HadesTown myself this month, too! I saw it on the West End in my trip to England for my cousin's wedding! (And as long as I'm bragging about what I saw on that trip, I also saw Love's Labors Lost at the Globe and Marianela - Timeless at the Royal Ballet.)

Thanks for nothing, you useless subscription

I'm so happy to see Hornblower getting some love! I used to watch the films ALL the time when I was a kid. Both the series with Ioan Gruffudd and the 1951 film with Gregory Peck. Freaking love those stories. Also very appropriate of Alan to pair that with Black Flag (best Assassin's Creed ever. don't @ me)

Unapologetic Bibliophile

I am currently reading the Count of Monte Cristo for the first time. So...many...words... previous to that I had read 3 Jane Austen books and will continue the Jane Austen collection when I am done. (Love JA and have read all the books about 15 times this century). I also saw The Odyssey and Disclosure Day. Both were very well done. Tonight, I think I may have to watch the Kissing Booth series again, just to have Jono and Alan in my head screaming "Say It!" And "132 minutes!"

Angela D. Mitchell

You may enjoy the later ones more than I did, so it may just be me! For me, Rice gets into subtexts and changes the characters in ways that I just didn't enjoy.

Angela D. Mitchell

I can't wait to see the Hadestown proshot! All I've heard are fantastic things.

Angela D. Mitchell

The Ioan Gruffudd Hornblower series was so lovely! It was absolutely wonderful from beginning to end. I'm also a huge fan of the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin books, and Peter Weir's "Master and Commander" is pretty much a perfect film for me.

KrissyArtist

No I can understand that. Tolkien does that in the appendices for me. There is a lot of important stuff he puts in the appendices that arent in the main book and it drives me crazy. Like I love the stuff but I wish it was in the main story.

Caleb Newberry

Me and my GF watched Hadestown in theaters!! It was such a good time!!

We are reading the Hunting Party By Lucy Foley. It’s a mystery and we’re reading it together so we can figure it out as we go.
