How do you grow after making mistakes and enduring pain? What is your favorite thing about Iroh?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are reacting to Avatar: The Last Airbender again but with a twist. Jonathan is going toe-to-toe with Uncle Iroh… or agreeing with Iroh because he’s the GOAT. They talk about all the things that make Iroh so great, such as his humility and wisdom but also how he handles his mistakes and regrets. Alan dares Jonathan to find anything to criticize about Iroh. Will he come up with anything?

Yeah, ATLA is probably my favorite show. I've watched it at least 20 times, and there's many good characters each with interesting stories, and I feel like there's always one character that can be at least somewhat relevant to one's life, no matter what age/experiences someone may be/have had. But yeah Netflix has the animated show, the new live action show(which is worth a watch after seeing the animated show. Just as a note, there will be differences, so don't expect an exact replica of the animation.) ... and Netflix I think also has the 2010 Avatar movie, that one I wouldn't recommend unless you want to watch it to see the wrong ways of making a movie.

Not sure if there'd be enough time/interest from others to review an anime, but there are many great anime where characters have to learn to live with pain, which they may experience a lot of, and find ways to either enjoy life despite the pain, or learn to accept it. ATLA is definitely a life changing show, and I have some anime I could mention that I also feel are life changing, but I'll just say Vinland Saga is one show that so far has just been amazing.

I just watched the live action Netflix show because I wanted to understand these episodes better (I knew I needed more time to watch the original), and even with my short time spent in the Avatar universe this had me bawling. I’m about to start season 2 of the original and I’m amazed at how deep this show is. ❤️

ATLA is my favorite show of all time so these have been some of my favorite episodes. You could easily spend an episode on every main character because it’s simply that rich. A Villain’s Therapy episode on Azula would be amazing!

The best thing about Iroh is how much he believes in his nephew. There's no way Zuko could have achieved his redemption without Iroh not just guiding him, but supporting him. You can easily look at fictional characters in other media who failed to get a redemption arc, and the main reason for it is because they didn't have anyone like Iroh to get there.

Thank you so much this is one of episodes I was waiting for since I started watching :-D I really get that getting insults well because of selfhate :D nobody was yet able to insult me as well as me so when somone tries I ironically have that feeling of superiority for being so much better at that :D I absolutely love the scene with zuko and iroh reunion. Zuko was used to be afraid of his father for doing any mistake and when he came to his uncle father figure who he actually betrayed he only got unconditional love and forgivness. Live action Avatar definitely isn't as goofy as original but it's still pretty goofy and it works pretty well with deepening some aspects of story, personal storylines etc. Relationship between iroh and zuko has some new pretty great aspects where zuko helped iroh as well through hard times. Plus leaves from the wines melody is used pretty well and it nearly made me cry more than once. When I learned there will be live action avater I felt like it has nothing to offer to this perfect show and while I'd still say animated version is better live action definitely has it's place and it's more than just copy which wouldn't ad anything. And live action Iroh is pretty great too, though I miss his accent.

Iroh is my hero. I would also relate him to the concepts of radical acceptance and willingness from DBT (Linehan). He is mindful of the moment, doing what he CAN do right now, rather than trying to force his will on the word, as we do most of the time. I was also thinking that the royal family can also be interpreted as an inner landscape of personality parts, with hurt angry inner children (Zuko), overcompensation (Azula), and a healthy, wise part (Iroh). Whenever I try to relate to my inner wise mind, I cannot help but hear the voice of Iroh in me. The creators brought so much psychological depth and Asian wisdom into a simple kids show, while making it so much fun to watch. It is an outstanding show!

I always ugly cry at that song too, Alan. No matter how many times I hear/see it. It never gets old, nor will it ever not move me to tears. Those short 25minutes is so full of small moments, that culminates to the climax of the episode: Uncle Iroh showing exactly why he became who he is in the show. That he learned the hard way, and knows why it is so hard.

Uncle Iroh was the first male tv show character who showed me how to use kindness and vulnerability to grow close and help people. Probably my first step into wanting to become a child psychologist. I remember watching it when it came out and crying at every line because no matter what Zuko did, Iroh never loved or thought of him any less.

I think it’s one of the more important “kid” shows that I can show my own children. I think there are so many wonderful messages about friendship, family, strength and happiness. And while I understand the appeal of sourpuss heroes especially for teen audiences (I was a big Potterhead back in the day lol) I think Aang stands out as a character that is heroic with joy and laughter, which I just love so much. He has inner pain sometimes, but rarely inner turmoil, and it creates such a healing tone to the whole show.

ATLA is my favorite piece of media of all time, and while it’s got so many fantastic scenes, I think my absolute favorite is the Zuko/Iroh reunion in S3. Pretty much everything about that scene was executed to perfection and it always gets to me no matter how many times I see it

You clearly have the sauce, you just need something to put it on. <3 Meanwhile Iroh is perfect. I haven't watched the new live ATLA either for the exact same reason you guys were stating... the silliness, joy, and things only possible in animation is what makes this show move from "lovely" to masterpiece. I don't think it's possible in live acting.

this video was genuinely very helpful for me with where i'm at in life right now. i moved out of an unhealthy environment and into a new one where i'm struggling in different ways, and i was directly called out by one of the people i live with on being pessimistic and not trying hard enough to be happy. i don't believe it is true about me in every area of life, but i think in some that have been relevant right now it is, so i need to put in more effort to change the way i view things and try to find happiness where i can. i've watched atla countless times, but i hadn't let iroh's lessons sink into me yet. having this video put in front of me mere days after the conversation with my roommate was immensely helpful. thank you guys for this one- i believe all your videos have an impact on someone, somewhere, and for this video, i can say it for sure has had an impact.

Thank you so much for the episode about Iroh. We indeed could include more Iroh in ourselfs because the way he treats others especially Zuko gets me every time. No mather what people do, or say, or just throw at him he never really gets mad. I've been wondering why you didn't include the scene where Zuko separates and Iroh just lets him go and make his own experiences (because for me it was a really important scene that showed how much he respected Zuko and supported him find his way.... but since this was more about Iroh and less about his relationship with Zuko its fine I guess ;P. And about the end of the video I completely understand the tears the one episode when he is celebrating his sons birthday and starts to sing makes me cry every time.

Regarding the monthly “one nice meal” from your college days (9:02)… these may have been a poor choice financially but experiences like this can morph into nourishing choices spiritually and relationship-wise. Experiencing good food with good friends is, as Iroh would say, “one of life’s true delights.” Even to the point of transcendence, like in the story/movie “Babette’s Feast.” When the spending or the food itself doesn’t get skewed by some addiction, entitlement or mindlessless, it can be an expression of art, vitality, generosity, and even beauty… all things that inspire hope. I think this is the root of Iroh’s obsession with tea. The mindful process of making a really good tea and then the joy of sharing it with friends… 🤌🏻

I haven’t had cable since 2001 so I missed this show entirely. Cinema Therapy introduced it to me and I couldn’t be happier about that. Watched this episode on YouTube yesterday, then came back onto Patreon to watch the Katara vs Azula video before watching the Director’s Cut here 😁 Love ATLA! I also saw the live action version on Netflix, and while I agree that certain tonal shifts and silliness can only happen in animation, I also appreciate what they have done with the live action version. There’s a seriousness to it that I appreciate while keeping the humanity and relationships of everyone intact. It could be improved upon, so I’m glad that they got green-lit for seasons 2 and 3; but overall also very happy for some good Asian representation on screen while getting to see ATLA from a different lens. I’ve liked what they added to the show because it gives an emotional depth that wasn’t in the animated series. Not sure if it’s a good trade, silliness for depth, but Sokka still brings the sarcastic and silly jokes so it’s not all lost. Hope you guys do more episodes on ATLA, and maybe also watch Legend of Korra also! 😊

I funnily enough had an Iroh in my life , she was wild and a free spirit and loved to live life to the full , dun get me wrong she loved to party and part hard she did , she was my inspiration, when she died I felt I lost someone special I’d give anything to here her wisdom once more , a part of myself died with her I was never the same when she passed away but the life advice she gave was valuable to me and has served me well , But Alan I challenge you to making this poltergeist cry , I shall bring forth man sized Kleenex 😂😆 But in all seriousness though we all need Iroh in our lives to take life lessons and wisdom , that song has made me cry a bucket load 😭☮️💔

Alan, just want you to know that you are making people cry, even without making feature films. Your vulnerability (this goes for both of you) helps people connect even further with whatever subject you are talking about. Also the way your team edits your videos is honestly so impressive to me. To me, Uncle Iroh in Book 1 is more of this detached, wise mentor type character. I say detached because he's clearly not invested in helping Zuko capture Aang. If he was, he would've been caught in episode 2 lol. In Book 2, however, Iroh definitely takes on a more active and parental role in Zuko's life. I think Iroh's main priority regarding Zuko in book 2 is opening his mind to the world outside the Fire Nation and what has become of it due to this war. It kind of makes me think of what I heard about the way Princess Diana raised her sons to see life outside the royal family, like taking her boys to homeless shelters. Anyway, even though Zuko always had a good heart, he would not have been the character and eventual Fire Lord we see in Book 3 without this experience and exposure. On a less serious note, I absolutely love how overtly "Dad" like Iroh becomes in Book 2, especially the annoying/adorkable Dad traits. Some that come to mind are like the embarrassing over the top singing. When he's yelling at Zuko in their tiny apartment "have you seen the spark rocks to heat up the water?!!" even though Zuko is literally right next to him. And staring out the window anxiously waiting for Zuko to come back from his date.

Love this video!! One thing I wanted to add to the conversation is that Iroh ALSO has learned to embrace the role of a therapist in social justice. I'm currently in school to get my Masters in Counseling Psychology, and between ethics and multiculturalism classes I've been learning a lot about the responsibility of those in the counseling profession to be advocates for social justice and change, to defend those who have been oppressed, and work toward a better and more equitable world. Iroh is a literal warrior, and the only times we see him get actually furious and dangerous are the times when he is fighting for a righteous cause. He betrays the Fire Nation in supremely epic fashion for a Spirit being that was murdered, he fights the Dai Li to make sure Katara and Aang could escape, and he ends the military occupation of Ba Sing Se. Now, as far as social justice goes, this is generally not a literal one-for-one comparison lol, but I think the point stands.

I had a thought about Iroh this morning, granted I've had a lot of thoughts about Iroh and ATLA in general over the years lol. Remember in season 2 during Iroh and Toph's conversation when she says to him "Maybe you should tell your nephew you need him too?" I was thinking to myself "I really hope at some point Iroh did tell Zuko that." But when I thought about it more, I think he showed Zuko how much he needed him multiple times throughout the show. The reunion scene between them at the end of season 3 has both of them crying. We've seen Iroh cry before, but I think this time when we see him cry, it really shows his relief that Zuko came back to him. Iroh was doing fine on his own, having escaped prison in a massively impressive way, and reuniting with the White Lotus. He has an established goal of his own and a strong support network. However, when Zuko comes back and Iroh is holding him in his arms and crying, I think this communicates to Zuko and the audience that Iroh really did need him too. ***tearbending***

I work in a school and we are all about the pyramid approach to education. We push that idea of Carl rodgers of unconditional love. Those 3 yo (spec Ed) kids want that love and acceptance and it’s now we dump love and acceptance on them and how do we get them somewhere. With with the pyramid approach to education. Such a strong example of the power of storytelling. Iroh - along with the rest of the Avatar cast of characters - is so three-dimensional and fully realized in my mind, despite the fact that he is an animated fictional person in a land of magic. I hope I can achieve a fraction of his enlightenment and wisdom over my lifetime.

ATLA will always be the best most balanced animated show I've ever seen, I can say with confidence. The two scenes of Zuko reuniting with Iroh in the White Lotus tent and of Iroh honoring his deceased son with Leaves from the Vine ALWAYS makes me cry hard, one: Tears of joy in the reunion and then tears of heartbreak with Leaves from the Vine scene. The latter scene tends to destroy me moreso because I've also lost family I loved and there's really no words to truly convey just how painful and world-shattering it is. There's comfort in the fact that that just proves that they TRULY meant something to you and that you loved them, albeit it may still always be painful/bittersweet because you will still miss them. Anyway, Iroh is THE uncle that everyone needs, for sure. RIP Mako. 🥰

I was in the Navy a couple years back, VERY briefly; had a family emergency(Story for another day) so before I could ship out, I had to separate. Every time I see that scene of Iroh singing "Leaves from the Vine" I cry, cuz I think of my sister & how that would've been her, had something bad happened to me out at sea, she would've looked at a photo of me with tears in her eyes & so much regret at how our relationship used to be & it'd be too late to fix things, cuz for a long time we weren't on good terms... fortunately I did come marching home 😊 & Everything is okay between us now, the bridge has been rebuilt 😊

God! It’s crazy how his scene never fails to make me cry (made me cry again and this is my 4th time watching this video). I’m still trying to figure out exactly why? I guess I just feel his pain as well as feel horrible that such a good guy has to go through the same rain clouds of anguish we do. He doesn’t deserve it! But like you said, it helped make him the lovable and inspiring guy he is in the show. Much like the rest of us, mistakes we learn from makes us ultimately better. I love his character, and his advice and your advice are the perfect blend to make things better. And that’s why I always come back to this video.. and why I subscribed to the Patreon just to see more of it as well as the rest of your amazing videos.
