Hello everyone! ✨

This week, I wanted to help you improve your understanding of negative space and how it relates to the object itself. This way you can build a solid foundation for more detailed work later on. 🤗

Materials:

Brush pens in various colours

Sketchbook or drawing paper

Creativity

Exercise 1: Practicing Negative Space

Choose a few simple objects: Choose a few simple objects with clear shapes, such as a plant, a cup, or a fruit. You can use the references I added to this post, but you can also look around for your references

on Pinterest or just in your home. If there is a white background, you can choose to use another colour.

Draw the negative space: Look at the space around and between your chosen object. Using a brush pen, outline the areas around your object, focusing on capturing the shapes of the surrounding spaces. Fill in the outlined spaces with the brush pen, leaving the object itself clear.

Repeat: Practice this with different objects and from different angles to get comfortable recognizing and drawing negative space.

Exercise 2: Practicing drawing the subject itself

Focus on the object: Choose the same objects you used for the negative space practice.

Draw the Base Layer: Draw the basic shapes and forms of the object with a brush pen. This is your underlayer, so keep it simple and avoid details. Focus on capturing the overall structure and form of the object with loose, confident strokes.

Repeat: Practice drawing the base layer of various objects multiple times until you feel comfortable capturing their forms.

Exercise 3: Combine both practices

Choose an Object: Pick one of the objects you've practiced with.

Draw Negative Space: Draw and fill in the negative space around the object as practiced.

Add the Base Layer: Once the negative space is dry, draw the base layer of the object itself using a different brush pen.

Tips:

Observation Skills: Spend time observing the negative spaces and the shapes of different objects before drawing.

Consistency: Practice regularly to improve your understanding of negative space and object forms.

Experiment: Try using different colors and sizes of brush pens to see how they affect your drawing.

I hope you have a lot of fun with this exercise! Please let me know if you have any questions. 😊

Happy drawing! 🌸
