Good Morning Everyone! ☀️
This week, we’re focusing on sharpening your sketching skills by drawing reference photos within a time frame. This exercise is designed to improve your observation and drawing skills, making you better at capturing details quickly and effectively. 🤗
Materials Needed:
Sketchbook or drawing paper
An HB pencil (you can use other grades like 4B or 6B if you prefer)
A pen
Eraser (optional, but useful for corrections)
Exercise 1: Pencil Sketching
Choose a Reference Photo: I added some reference photos you can use, or you can select another reference that interests you. It could be a portrait, a landscape, or an object. The key is to pick something that will challenge your observation skills.
Set a Timer: Set a timer for 5 minutes. The time limit is helpful to push you to focus on the most important aspects of the sketch.
Start Sketching: Begin by quickly sketching the main shapes and outlines of the reference photo. Don’t worry about details or perfect lines; try to capture the essence and proportions as accurately as possible.
Exercise 2: Pen Sketching (5 Minutes)
Choose a New Reference Photo: Pick a different photo from the one you used for the pencil sketch. This variety will help you practice different aspects of sketching.
Set a Timer: Set a timer for another 5 minutes.
Start Sketching with Pen: Without the option to erase, focus on capturing the essence of the reference. The goal here is to build confidence in your sketches
Review and Reflect: Once the timer goes off, review your pen sketch. Notice how the lack of an eraser impacted your approach.
Exercise 3: Set different time frames
After completing the first 5-minute sketch, start a new sketch with the following time limits. You can choose if you want to use a pen or a pencil:
3-Minute Timer: Use these 3 minutes to create a new sketch with the same reference photo. This time, focus on refining your approach.
1-Minute Timer: Create another quick sketch of the same reference photo. The goal is to capture the essence with just a few strokes. This quick sketch should focus your attention on your ability to quickly represent the core elements of the reference.
Tips
Focus on the Big Picture: In both exercises, prioritize capturing the overall shape and proportions rather than being trapped in details.
Stay Relaxed: Keep your hand loose and your mind focused.
Practice Regularly: The more you practice, the better you’ll become at observing and translating what you see onto paper.
