Hi!!!! Another month, another exercise! This time another art block breaker to use when it feels like your creativity is hiding from you!

Another month, another exercise! This time another art block breaker to use when it feels like your creativity is hiding from you! For more art block breakers, go to these posts:

Exercise: Art block breakers - Part 1

Exercise: Art block breakers - Part 2

The exercise

1. Make a messGrab a blank piece of paper and create 5 random marks, for example: Scribbles, blobs, zigzags, spirals, etc. Don’t overthink it, just trust your instincts.

2. Flip the pageTurn the paper 90° or upside down. Look at your scribbles like you’re watching clouds! What do you see? A face, creature, a little scene?

3. Mark what you seeUse a different colour or a light pencil to mark shapes or forms you notice in the shapes you created.

4. Turn it into somethingWithout erasing your original marks, start drawing on top. Build around the shapes.Maybe that loop becomes a snail. Maybe that blob turns into a wizard’s hat.Keep it loose and fun — this isn’t about perfection.

As you can see below, I created a cliff, a little pond and a bag with just a few extra marks!

Why this exercise helps

No blank canvas fear

No pressure to be “good”

Gets your brain thinking in new, playful ways

Reminds you that inspiration can come from anything
