Can your players survive a night in a deadly haunted house?

This encounter can be run in most locations and settings, though it works particularly well in a gothic urban environment. I would run the encounter for a party of players around Level 8 or 9, provided at least some of them have magical attacks available (either spells or weapons).

I think there's a lot of scope here to make this a really creepy, unsettling encounter for the players, especially during the initial exploration of the haunted house, and during the first appearance of its ghostly residents.

As always, maps are attached below. Enjoy!

All of the exploration of the house changes if your players walk around with detect magic 🥲 i played this yesterday with my group. They liked it. Kinda. But that was my fault. I think? They went into the bedroom, saw the mirror beaming with magic, the paladin detected good and evil, surprise, surprise, and went straight for the mirror without further discussion, or even missing a beat. Just put a second level smite in that thing. We didn’t get to meet the ghosts, we didn’t get to meet the stupid fiend. It was all very anticlimactic. I would run this differently next time. It’s also a good reminder to keep your pc abilities in mind. I should’ve had the fiend attack them anyway and let the ghosts explain later before vanishing. Wasn’t clever thinking on my part. But I also thought, it was a smart idea to walk around with detect magic, then divine sense, and then immediately destroy the mirror. (By the way aren’t magical objects supposed to be nearly indestructible?) anyway, I think this was a great encounter, I need to adjust my dming. Wanted to give some feedback for the author and other DMs what to look out for to not repeat my mistakes Oh I also would’ve loved a map of the ground floor 😅 not to be greedy or anything
