So, yeah, Sufficient Velocity is doing this Lewd Contest Thing and I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring to test what their level of tolerance is on NSFW material in stories.

This was in the planning stages as an Interlude for Winning Peace, but I hadn't been planning to write it just yet.  With the contest still open I decided to adapt this as a potentially standalone story that works as an Interlude for Winning Peace.

So yeah, beware some lewd transhumanist shenanigans going on, but I hope everyone enjoys.

Winning Peace: Interlude

Interlude - Star-Crossed Lovers: "-and as we approach the thirtieth anniversary of World War Three, many voices among the former political elites of the still-extant nation-states are calling for a devolution of power from the Stellar Council. An official press release from the Council, however...

The sub-text of this is horrifying.

Nick P

It’s controversial. Not sure if there’s a right answer for something like that.

Whale A

Man the Cuck kings and Cuck queens who have the fetish but don't want to deal with human drama are probably going to exploit the hell out of this. Oh and don't get me started on incels. Street prostitution is probably now dead as this new emerging industry destroys demand for anyone who just wants to get their rocks off without emotional connections.

Slayer Anderson

I’m large part, the SV contest is to blame here. They wanted something extra freaky so I put my weirdest foot forward.

Slayer Anderson

Don’t worry, this was more of a one-off for the contest. This level of weird won’t be common.

Klever Kilvanya

I thought it was hilarious, and honestly not to far fetched given the tech we have seen and the limitations described.

Acrimonius

There is, it’s one of the best and oldest words in every language. No.

Vacivus

Going forward, Is it going to be background canon that it exists, or are you more planning on ignoring it or background outlawing it or whatever?

Slayer Anderson

It's very likely going to remain background canon. In the coming week or two, I've been planning do a vote on exactly what people want Winning Peace to focus on. There's Ezekiel as the main character, but there's also a bunch of alternative POVs I can do of various VIPs and/or average Janes/Joes, and on the third hand there's some high-level societal shift that will also be interesting. Seeing the mixed reception here, I may also do a vote on how heavily transhumanist people want me to go with themes and subject-matter.

envy34

Uhhh…huh, I wasn’t really prepared for the exact direction that would go in but I guess I can see it? It seems decadent and I dunno lavishly dubious as hell but it was an interesting read at the very least.

RTY

I kinda really hope this isn't Canon to this story actually. There's no way people would actually support slavery. And this is slavery. Of mentally deficient people. The SI should squash this immediately. The un-personing of clone people should also be stopped. No, 'They aren't actually people' arguments work for me. Use robots/androids that look and feel just like humans if you really want to do this. This is a week late but still.

Slayer Anderson

As a sincere question, you're advocating for the use of machines with similarly limited intelligence in these roles, but what is the actual difference between a flash-printed organic organism fitting those specification and your proposition? In other words, is there a difference between metal and meat here? Again, not being sarcastic and would like to hear your thoughts on the subject.

RTY

I guess it's just an obvious sign of a 'slippery slope' thing happening. Robots / Androids can be made specifically for the task. They are not 'alive' in a living way, and can be made, carefully, in such a way that aren't and cannot become sentient / sapient/ whatever the word is to be aware of themselves. An individual. If the were made / became 'self aware' (in whatever context being a person is) then the same vehemence / disgust for enslaving a thinking being should exist for them. A flesh and blood clone is a human being. Deprived of the ability to think / be a 'full' person by design in this way is cruelty to a living being (especially a brother / sister human being). Suddenly the question of 'is it smart enough to be a "real" human' pops up. And the inverse, if a naturally born human is mentally deficient / physically deficient enough to be comparable to these clone pets, are they up to being lowered from human to 'pet'? Are artificial womb grow people less that naturally grown people? Would a Clone workforce not being paid because they're all 'livestock' workforce be next? In the human eye, a robot / android and a clone are VERY different, even in just the way people react to them in general. Knowing that this COULD be a full person / is already and them being treated as lesser seems like Humanity is going donw a slippery slop / darker path than they should. Or that an SI would allow them too. Clones are fine, treat them like people. Clone slaves as pets? Stupid evil territory. TLDR; A robot/android is a thing (until it's suddenly not) if made right / with proper care. A clone person made for the same purpose is still a person, deprived of abilities it should have. Slavery, basically. And it could be slavery for a robot / android depending on how 'advanced' or sophisticated it is.

Slayer Anderson

While I understand where you're coming from as far as additive vs. reductive changes to thinking capacity goes between unaltered humans and our current machine intelligences we use today, there very much is the question of what happens when digital sentience becomes the 'baseline' for android and robotic lifeforms. If you then make an electronic/robotic servitor in the same form, but without the higher-order thinking skills, is that similarly taboo? On the flip side of course, is that this isn't a natural human being that we're talking about 'printing out.' This is building an organic machine from a radically-altered blueprint created and then sent to a nanoforge 'factory' for assembly. The lifeform created was never going to have sentience or sapience and the narrative even hints that inasmuch as the body is made of meat, the mind behind it is digital in nature. More of an organic sextoy than a real human being. As established as well, there is some 'duty of care' and 'prevention of cruelty' along similar lines as laws protecting pets and animals in society today.

RTY

I do not believe human beings, even after a huge cultural interrupt like this WW3 and 30 years, could looks at an organic exact human being as a pet or sex toy. (Without being the piece of shit people who like / want slavery back like in the 'good ole' days'.') At least with a robotic look-and-feel-a-like you'd know it wasn't human beneath and was just a thing. (Up until it wasn't.) And it is basically an Artificial Human. Just one who was designed wrong intentionally to have the excuse that it isn't really 'human'. Would you have Artificial Humans, ones made with the same ability / capacities as normally birthed humans, be lesser also just for how they were made? Would they not be human? Would they be pets or not legally people? Once the 'digital sentience' got to the point that that they were human peer in ability / thought / feeling / whatever, than trying to treat them as a pet / not a person would stop. Obviously that really vague and simplistic a response, but that' how it should be to me. Once an android / robot / AI / machine intelligence is 'aware' / sapient / sentient, it should be treated like a human. Not because it is a human, but because it is now a peer...existence? 'Life'-form? I imagine even a machine intelligence on level with (or above) a human would know the difference between a toaster and itself. Maybe it would see humans making androids without it ability to think the same way I see making human artificial clones without their (should be) inherent sentience. Maybe it wouldn't care about robots not on it's level of existence. Who knows. Just seems likes one of the obvious 'don't do this' when trying to rebuild civilization / enhance / advance civilization. Or trying to be in a moral society. It's just a bad idea to un-human human beings. Whether they are artificial, created for the purpose, or not. Just...it screams dystopian to me.

Slayer Anderson

As far as I'm concerned we're principally discussing legal acceptance, not social acceptance, to answer your first point. As to the second, your point about whether or not humans made with the same ability would be considered to have the same legal status as ones who were born 'naturally' is exactly my point. The kind of cognitive and sapience-limiters that I'm talking about wouldn't be in place for those individuals. My point about the existence of a 'baseline' for machine intelligences was not that they *shouldn't* be treated equally. They *should be.* It was that creating more limited machines in imitation of form or function of a fully-sapient digital artificial intelligence is the exact same kind of issue we're talking about in creating lesser-sapient organic machines here in imitation of human life. Just because the standard of 'this is how smart a machine has to be to be self-aware' hasn't been set in our modern day yet, once it is will they look at something like a robotic sex toy with the same uncanny valley feeling that a human would in the situation in the story?

Slayer Anderson

Regardless of all of these points, though, the story isn't necessarily meant to provide answers so much as it is to provoke interesting questions about legality and moral codes. In continuing the story, there will definitely be push-back against developments like this. I will likely even use some of your talking points, if you don't mind.

RTY

Then, legally, I think it would be outlawed to create intentionally flawed clones with the intended end result making a human being to have has a pet. Cloning a mentally or physically deficient person that was already? Fine. Maybe they would be a need to do that. To have them as a pet? No. Intentionally messing up a clone of a person and / or designing a person and specifically denying them their sentience / sapience / personhood so they can be a plaything? Illegal. Morally wrong on a level that should easily transfer to law.

RTY

Using whatever I said here is fine. I just don't think in story it should have gotten any legality / ok. It should have probably been vehemently shot down as Slavery With Extra Steps and THEN they keep challenging and trying to get it legalized. Also, if the SI / MC / whatever has any moral fiber, they would update all their nana-forge whatever to not allow clones, complete or intentionally flawed, to be made.

Slayer Anderson

Duly noted, though I think the term 'clone' is our primary point of disagreement and possibly too loaded to use in this context. This is more of an 'altered reproduction.' Not a direct copy of someone so much as using their mind/body as inspiration for building a lookalike organic machine. Still, I'll keep all of this in mind for later chapters. Thank you for your input.
