Zane
“Am I crazy?”
Zane looked down at the top of Felix’s head where it was cradled against his stomach. He’d been waiting for Felix to tell him why he’d come home from work looking two seconds away from crying. But it was better not to pry with Felix. He needed time to process, to think through his feelings before he sort of word vomited them into the world.
That was how they came to be snuggled in bed, just the two of them, both in their underwear, Zane half sitting, half lying down, Felix’s long, lithe body between his open legs as he combed through silky dark tresses. Felix was so beautiful. He was so pretty and so unique, sometimes Zane found himself staring, wishing he was an artist so he could capture what he felt when he looked at him with some kind of tangibility.
“You have a collection of maiming cat-claw jewelry that costs more than most people’s houses, so I’m gonna need some more context, Lixie,” Zane teased.
Felix made a whiny, frustrated sound, making Zane giggle when he rubbed his face against his bare stomach. “I’m serious,” Felix sulked.
Zane grinned, fisting his hands in Felix’s hair to point his face towards him. “I know you’re serious. I just don’t know what we’re talking about.”
Felix blew a breath out through his nose. “Babies. We’re talking about babies.”
Okay, they were making progress. “Whose babies? There’s a startling number of them lately.”
“Our babies,” Felix said. “Or baby or maybe babies. Offspring, our offspring.”
“Ours? As in you and me?” Zane asked. “Cause I don’t think either of us can make that happen. It’s kind of a lock and key situation and no matter how many times you put your key in my lock or vice versa, there will be no baby. Not until science takes a giant leap forward. Also, we’re not really allowed to…you know, without our husbands.”
“Will you be serious?” Felix said, poking Zane in the ribs.
Zane frowned. “What is going on? Just tell me.”
“I want to have a baby,” Felix said.
“Okay…” Zane prompted.
“With Avi.”
“I assumed as much given that you’re, like, legally wed and stuff,” Zane teased.
“Is it crazy? To want to bring a poor, defenseless baby into this family? Into this house?” Felix asked, voice unusually meek.
“Again, Lix, context? Is it crazy because we both married psychopaths? Because we both married narcissists? Because they’re both horny 24/7 and we have a sex attic in our country home? What part is it that has you freaked out?”
“I just meant because the boys can’t love anything. What if they just leave him crying for hours or get pissed and like…shake him…or her. Oh god, or like just…I don’t know…I don’t even want to say what I’m thinking out loud.”
“That’s grim,” Zane said, stroking Felix’s hair. “But I kind of think you’re just letting your intrusive thoughts win. Yes, our husbands are selfish, horny dicks…often. But they’re also crazy smart, disgustingly rational, and never lose their temper except for people who try to hurt the family. And any babies you have will not just be family, they’ll be ours. With them. They’ll be fathers. You’ve seen how fiercely protective they are of their nieces. Do you think they’ll be less so with our own kids?”
Felix sighed. “No. Probably not.”
“Probably not?” Zane hedged.
Felix gave another long-suffering sigh. “Definitely not.”
Zane frowned. “Why do you still sound sad then?”
“What if-What if it changes things?”
Zane frowned. “Babies do change things. But change isn’t always bad.”
“What if it changes us?” Felix said, burrowing deeper into Zane’s arms.
“Us as in you and me? Or us as in the four of us?”
“Both?” Felix asked.
“Changes us how?” Zane asked, struggling to understand what had Felix so upset.
“Like this. Us. Right now. Can I still cuddle you once the kids are old enough to see it? Can the four of us still cuddle? Can I still kiss you whenever I want? Will our kids think it's weird that I kiss Asa goodbye like I kiss Avi? Will we get arrested? Will they take our kid away from us? I don’t know what the rules are.”
“There are no rules,” Zane said. “Polyamory isn’t illegal. I don’t know how our kids seeing us all in a happy, healthy, loving relationship is going to emotionally scar them. Nothing has to change between us. If anything, we’re so much better off than most couples. There’s four of us for one baby. Like, that has to be better than two.”
“Is it selfish of me to ask you and Asa to change your lives because I want a baby?”
“One: We’re adults and can make our own choices. Zane frowned. “Two: Did you ever think I want a baby, too?”
Felix looked up, horrified. “No! I-I mean, we could try to find surrogates together, I guess. If we both used Lola’s eggs, then our kids would be…half-siblings and cousins? That would be weird, right? But still, I wasn’t trying to steal this from—”
Zane put a hand over Felix’s mouth, cutting him off. “Your babies are my babies and vice versa. This is what we signed on for when we married the twins. I don’t need them to have my DNA for them to be mine. Asa and I already talked about it. We knew the minute you brought it up, you were already thinking about it.”
“Oh,” Felix said, voice dull.
Zane continued to pet Felix, eyes widening as he felt his stomach become damp. “Are-Are you crying?”
“You don’t have to point that out,” Felix wailed.
Zane had no idea what was going on. He was wholly out of his element. Normally, he was the one having the emotional breakdown and they were the ones comforting him. Felix, despite being the youngest, was most definitely the strongest, the most determined. The one who always got what he wanted. Zane was the caretaker of the house, but Felix was the caretaker of everyone’s feelings.
Zane pushed Felix onto his back, then sat between his legs so he could look down at him. Tears trailed down Felix’s cheeks to his hairline. Zane gripped his hips and squeezed, thumbs running along the V there. “You’re so pretty,” he whispered.
Felix sniffled. “I know, but thanks.”
Zane grinned, then fell forward, bracing himself over Felix, leaning down until they were almost nose to nose. “Our kids are going to have an insanely high self esteem.”
A tiny smile formed at the corners of Felix’s lips, but then disappeared. He reached his hand up and brushed his fingertips along Zane’s cheekbone. “You’re pretty too. So pretty.”
Zane’s stomach did somersaults. “Shut up,” he muttered.
Felix’s hands slid into Zane’s hair then, pulling him down. His mouth was already open when their lips met. Zane couldn’t help the sound he made. Felix was so warm, and he smelled so good. His lips were soft, his tongue insistent. He still tasted like the orange honey he’d put in his tea that morning.
Zane wanted to inhale Felix like a drug, he wanted to suck the honey from Felix’s tongue, to bury himself in his scent. Kissing Felix was always so…overwhelming, all-consuming but in a way that felt like home, like family, like comfort.
Kissing any of them was overwhelming in its own way. Kissing Asa set Zane’s whole body on fire, had him submitting instantly, and let his head go blissfully silent. Being with Asa was sensory overload, scrambling his atoms until there was only pleasure and pain, only whatever Asa chose to give him. It was raw and painful and beautiful in a way that made Zane’s heart feel like it would explode from love and gratitude whenever he thought of his husband. The man who’d rescued him in a million different ways.
Kissing Avi in a sexual way was rare, but when it happened it always felt…new, exciting, even weirdly taboo. Zane felt safe with Avi, felt a bond that settled somewhere between family and friend. They loved each other but weren’t in love with each other. They bonded over their love of the same people. It didn't make kissing him any less hot, just…different.
But kissing Felix was Zane’s favorite form of comfort. Where Asa needed to hurt and mark and claim to show ownership of Zane, Felix wanted to caress and coddle and tease. Zane loved them both. Needed them both. No, he needed all three of them. They didn’t work when one of them was gone. It was like trying to drive a car on three wheels. It could be done, but the wear and tear would be permanent and scarring.
Zane settled between Felix’s legs, moaning when he realized Felix was just as hard as he was. Felix hooked one leg over Zane’s thigh, bringing their hips flush against one another, cocks slotting perfectly in a way that made Zane lightheaded. Felix started to slowly roll against him, lightning arcing through his blood each time they came together.
This was another way sex with Felix varied from sex with Asa. Felix had infinite patience with Zane. The two had wasted entire days lazily exchanging blowjobs or handjobs, kissing until their lips were chapped and the thought of coming again was painful.
Zane could never explain it to outsiders. Had never even tried. He knew that some in the family suspected that their dynamic wasn’t the norm, but it was some kind of a mutually agreed upon thing that those outside the house wouldn’t look too closely at what the four of them did when they were alone. And that worked for all of them.
Felix’s hands slid into Zane’s underwear to squeeze his ass, giving even more delicious pressure as they fucked against each other in this crude pantomime of sex. Zane pulled his mouth from Felix’s to bite at his jaw, nose behind his ear, inhaling the scent of his shampoo. “I’m already so close and we barely started.”
“Me, too,” Felix promised. “It’s okay.”
“I love you,” Zane whispered, feeling like he just needed to say it out loud.
“I love you, too, baby,” Felix promised, bringing their hips together faster. “Oh, fuck. Oh, fuck.”
Zane was so focused on Felix, he never even heard the door open, just heard his husband say, “I told you.”
Zane and Felix didn’t stop, but they slowed, waiting for the inevitable, smiling at each other when the bed sank on either side. Felix rolled them onto their sides and Zane sighed contentedly as Asa nuzzled at his neck. “Really, Lois, not even a phone call or a facetime?” he said. “Don’t think I’m going to let that slide.”
“Shut up and fuck me. I need to get off,” Zane said, then pitched forward to capture Felix’s lips once more.
“Zaney’s getting so mouthy,” Avi said around a laugh.
“You shut up, too. If you’re not inside me in the next thirty seconds, I’m carrying on without you,” Felix promised.
“Yes, kitten.”
Asa yanked roughly at Zane’s underwear, barely getting it under his ass before his slick cock was probing at Zane’s unprepped hole. He did his best not to tense, but it was hard when Asa growled, “Just remember, you asked for this.”
Then he was forcing himself inside Zane’s unyielding body. He couldn’t stop the pained cry that fell from his lips, a cry that Felix eagerly swallowed, he loved when Zane was hurting. He pulled Zane’s leg up over his hip so they could continue to rub off on each other. After a moment, Zane’s body adjusted, making room for Asa as it always did.
“That better, Lois?” Asa teased, one hand tangling in his hair and the other holding him open so he could fuck into him in long, hard thrusts that made Zane’s brain melt and his toes curl.
“Hnf,” was all he could manage.
Zane knew the moment Avi pushed inside Felix, eagerly swallowing his low moan.
Nobody in the world could ever understand the love he had for all of them. And nobody could ever understand what it was like to have sex with two people who could literally read each other’s thoughts, could feel what the other felt.
When the four of them were together like this—when Asa and Avi synced up like they did—being together was like…completing a circuit. The twins moved almost as one, setting a brutal pace that tossed Felix and Zane against each other in the most delicious fucking way until they were no longer thinking, just feeling, all of them working towards one common goal.
“I’m gonna come,” Felix whispered into his mouth.
“Fuck, yes. Please, me too,” Zane said on an exhale.
Felix gasped and Zane could feel his release spilling between them, coating his cock in the sticky wetness. Zane moaned as Asa picked up his pace almost like he knew Zane needed the help, needed that tiny little push to finish. His now slick cock was working against Felix’s stomach as Asa pounded into him mercilessly, chasing his own climax.
Teeth settled into the indentations on his shoulder without warning and that was it, Zane was catapulted off the cliff into that euphoric mind-numbing pleasure that happened every time the four of them were together. He clung to Felix as the boys kept using them, kissing and just breathing each other in.
Then they were both coming in that weird freaky way they did, together, at the same time. Zane shivered as he felt Asa throbbing inside him, knowing he was filling him up. It was only at weird times like this, after a morning of baby talk that Zane felt a little sad they couldn’t have kids the old fashioned way. He’d kill to have babies that looked just like him and Asa.
The four of them lay there, fucked out and breathless for a long while before Felix finally said, “Why are you guys home?”
“Wow, kitten, I’m trying not to take that personally, but considering I came home and found you in bed with another man, it stings a little,” Avi said, voice full of laughter.
Zane smirked as he watched Felix roll his eyes. “You know what I mean. I thought you were meeting with that Hans dude about some kind of celebrity collab?”
Zane looked over his shoulder at Asa. “Yeah, and I know you had a staff meeting this morning. You’ve been bitching about it all week.”
Asa slipped free of Zane, then rearranged himself so he was more comfortable. “It’s noon, Lois. The meeting was hours ago. When Avi and I couldn’t get either of you on the phone we knew that you two were playing hookie. Without us.”
“It wasn’t intentional,” Zane said. “Felix was having some big feelings, so he needed to talk them out. That’s not exactly either of your specialties.”
“That’s fair,” Avi said, unbothered. “Do you feel better now, kitten?”
Felix looked Zane in the eyes, then nodded. “Yeah. I do.”
“Okay, good,” Avi said. “What was it that was bothering you?”
“I want to have a baby,” Felix said, then added, “Now.” Asa’s hand spasmed on Zane’s arm, but he said nothing. In fact, nobody said anything. Until Felix said, “Thoughts?” his tone pissy.
“I’m-I mean I’m down with doing my best to get you pregnant, kitten, but I’m pretty sure we’re going to have to do it with the help of modern science. That is going to take a bit of time. Unless you just want any baby, in which case I’m sure Asa and I can…work something out.”
“Work something out?” Zane echoed. “What the hell does that even mean?” Before either of them could respond, Zane shook his head. “You know what? No. Nevermind. I don’t want to even know what kind of bonehead Tom & Jerry type plan you would cook up to get Felix a baby today. Just…no.”
Avi huffed out a laugh. “I just meant we could look into adopting. Money talks and God knows we have enough to buy a dozen orphanages. But we can do it however you want. You know that.”
Felix rolled onto his back, looking between Avi and Asa. “You don’t mind? Like…you’d be okay with us having a baby?”
The twins exchanged a confused look.
“Why would we mind?” Avi asked, sounding genuinely confused. “We sort of figured at some point one of you was gonna want to breed. Maybe both of you. My money was on Zaney first cause he is kind of like our housewife, but having a baby with you is awesome. I hope he or she looks just like you. You’re so pretty.”
Zane tried not to take the housewife thing personally. He supposed he was the one who took care of the house the most.
“You-You don’t think it will mess things up? Between the four of us?” Felix asked, sounding so painfully young.
Avi scoffed. “Why would it screw anything up? You and I come from huge, fucked up families, all of which kill people…like as a hobby. And we are some of the most well adjusted people I know. Hell, if August and Lucas can be awesome parents, there’s no reason the four of us couldn’t. Nobody is more fucked up than those two.”
“They’re both college professors,” Zane said. “How are they fucked up?”
Asa laughed. “August butchers people for fun. You’ve never seen him really let loose during a kill. There’s nobody scarier. And Lucas? Lucas was literally thrown in a mental hospital for months.”
“Okay, but in all fairness to Lucas, he really is a psychic and his co-worker was actually a serial killer so I don’t think that counts. Besides, August might like to kill people but he’s a really good dad,” Zane reminded.
“He’s a good dad because he goes out of his way to be. He studies what good dads do and then he does it. He would kill for his girls. And we’d kill for our kids too. We might not know how to love someone in the traditional sense, but we are really good at faking it,” Asa promised.
“And we won’t have to fake our desire to keep them safe. We are wired to protect what’s ours. And every Mulvaney is ours, but any baby we have will be even more protected.”
“That’s part of my concern,” Felix muttered.
Zane frowned. “What?”
“You can’t, like, go beating up other toddlers cause they stole our kids' ball or like threatening a sixth-grader because they made fun of him,” Felix said.
“I don’t know how I feel about you thinking I would beat up a toddler, which for the record, I wouldn’t. It’s not even, like, a fair fight,” Avi said, sounding hurt.
“No promises on the sixth-grader though,” Asa said. “Middle schoolers are fucking dicks. I don’t think their lives are threatened enough, if you ask me.”
Zane snickered. “I’m with Asa on that one.” He rolled onto his side and pushed Felix’s long dark hair out of his face. “Do you feel better now?”
Felix nodded. “Yeah. I-I want to have a baby. I want all of us to have a baby. Together. Is…Is that okay?”
“It’s okay with me,” Zane promised.
“Me, too,” Asa said, resting his head on Zane’s.
“Me three,” Avi said. “But for the record, I knew you were going to want a baby the moment you laid eyes on Lola.”
Felix flushed. “Shut up.”
“See,” Avi teased, leaning down and kissing his face so many times Zane lost count. “You took one look at her and started imagining what your babies would look like.”
“She’s so beautiful,” Felix said with a sigh. “Her skin, her hair, her eyes. No offense, but this family needs a little more color in their ink. You’re all very…white.”
Zane couldn’t stop the giggle that escaped. “He’s right. You guys all look like you’re made of cream cheese and mayo.”
Asa poked fingers into his ribs. “Laugh it up, Lois. You’re just as melanin challenged as the rest of us.”
“True, but any babies with Felix’s DNA will hopefully look like him and Jericho,” Zane said.
“Jagger looks just like Jericho,” Avi said.
“Yeah, but not through any help from them. He came to them that way. It is kind of weird though, right? That they each look like one of their parents even though they’re not related?” Zane said.
“They’re biologically related to each other but don’t look a thing alike. Genetics are weird,” Asa said. “The truth is, we have no idea what we’re going to get when we throw all that genetic material into a blender. I assume Felix’s DNA is the first in the dish?”
Felix shrugged. “I figured we could do it like August and Lucas. Use both of our stuff and see what takes. Lola said she’d donate her eggs, but she wasn’t really on board with the whole pregnancy thing, so we’d have to get a surrogate…which is scary.”
Avi stretched his arms overhead. “Money talks, kitten. We’ll find the perfect surrogate. Promise.”
Felix grinned so wide that Zane’s heart sort of somersaulted in his chest. “We’re gonna have a baby.”
Zane leaned forward and captured his mouth in a kiss that lingered. “You might want to prepare yourself. Everyone in this family seems to spit kids out in duplicate. I think it's something in the Mulvaney mansion’s water supply.”
“We can handle it,” Avi said. “And if we can’t, we can afford an army of nannies.”
“You guys are so spoiled,” Zane said around a yawn. “I need a nap. Any takers?”
“Me,” Asa said, dragging Zane back against him.
“Not me,” Felix said. “I’m hungry.” He looked at his husband. “Take me somewhere fancy for lunch?”
Avi grinned. “Have I ever been allowed to take you anywhere else?”
“No. And that won’t change just cause we have babies. Our children will wear couture. Oh!” Felix’s eyes lit up. “I could create a whole kids line.”
“We’ve created a monster,” Zane said around a laugh.
Once Asa and Zane were alone, he turned, snuggling deeper into Asa’s arms. “Are you really okay with this?”
“With us having a baby in the house? Why wouldn’t I be? I was raised in a house full of kids. Avi and I always knew you and Felix were going to want kids. He wasn’t making that up. We’re okay with it. We are kind of excited about it. Are you worried we won’t be able to handle it?”
Zane kissed Asa’s neck. “Nope. Felix isn’t really either deep down. I think he was just panicking a bit because it's a big decision and instead of two people having to be on board, there’s four.”
Zane’s heart clenched as Asa pushed his fingers through his curls gently. Asa was rarely soft with Zane, but when he was it shook him to his core. When he looked up, Asa was staring. “What? What’s wrong?”
“Are you still okay with all of this?” Asa asked. “The four of us together like this?”
Zane couldn’t stop the laugh that escaped. “What you walked in on a few minutes ago didn’t make that answer clear enough?”
“Oh, I know you love Felix,” Asa said. “But do you still love me? Are you still okay with living with Felix and Avi forever?”
Zane frowned. “Where is this coming from? I do love Felix. And I love you. Just in two entirely different ways. I need you both. I’m not me without the two of you and Felix isn’t himself without me and Avi. Are you still okay with the four of us? Does it bother you that I love Felix too?”
Asa shook his head. “No. If it was anyone else in the world, I would kill them. Without hesitation. Then I’d probably chain you up and fuck you again and again until you remembered who you belong to. But it's different with Felix. He’s…like Avi. He’s family. He’s an…extension of me. He’s the parts that I can’t give you.”
“Good. Cause I can’t live without any of you and once we bring a baby into this house, its game over, pal. I’m going to fall head over heels for that child and you’ll have to pry them out of my cold, dead, hands. I don’t care whose DNA he carries.”
Asa grinned. “Duly noted, Lois. Duly noted.”
“Good.” Zane cupped Asa’s cheek, tone teasing as he said, “Now tell me you love me.”
“I love you above all things, Lois,” Asa said, his gaze soft.
Once more Zane’s heart tripped in his chest. “Now tell me I’m pretty,” he said, suddenly desperate to lighten the mood.
Asa kissed him softly. “So pretty.”
Zane shivered, then pressed his lips to Asa’s again, running his tongue along the seam of his lips. whimpering when Asa’s hand ran along his hip and squeezed.
“I thought you wanted a nap?” Asa purred into his mouth.
“You started this,” Zane whispered. “You can’t be all soft and sweet with me and think I’m not going to want you to fuck me again.”
Asa rolled him onto his back, settling over him, parting his knees with his thighs. “Yeah? You want me to be soft with you, Lois?”
“Would you?”
Asa ghosted his lips over Zane’s. “Sure. If that’s what you want.”
What would that even be like? “I-I’m not sure. How about you just start and we…see how it goes.”
“I can tell you how it’s going to go, Lois,” Asa said, kissing his way along his collarbone. “I’m going to try to slowly take you apart, and ten minutes from now you’re going to tell me to forget what you said and fuck you like an animal, like your the one who wants to be bred. But that’s okay. I’ll pretend to be surprised when you’re begging me to hurt you.”
Zane’s cock was already hard against Asa’s hip. “Yeah, that works. Let’s do that.”
“You’re the boss, Lois.”
Zane smiled. Who wouldn’t want this life? These men? This feeling? Zane was the luckiest man in the world. And he couldn’t be happier.
