Pay attention to the reactions of everyone when the chair is thrown at Miles Teller. Nobody else in the room knew that was going to happen so their reactions were genuine. Also Miles actually plays a lot of the drums as he is a drummer and Simmons was originally going to be a band director so they were perfect for the roles.

Darkest Knight

Omg i literally messaged you about this let’s gooooo lol. Love this movie.

Tony Ivic

Honestly i think the editing is not talked about enough because its often overshadowed by the cinematography and performance from JK Simmons. Also the use of close ups and just really tight shots reminds me of The Bear.

Xclusive

Amazing movie with amazing performances!

James vs Cinema

Ooooo I can get what you’re saying just from the picture I used for the post haha. I’ll pin this so I won’t forget to speak on it!

James vs Cinema

Ayyyy! Starting off the new year with some telepathy lol

James vs Cinema

I didn’t know he played, but similar to The Bear and its star, it’s awesome to see people bring forth previous talents into their roles!

Whiplash was a great experience in theaters when I didn't know what to expect. I appreciate your reactions and the good vibes. I originally joined the Patreon because I wanted to suggest CRANK (and crank high voltage, the sequel) in the action cinema genre. I don't know if you've seen those, but if you haven't it would be a shame to miss. Appears to be a B movie and it technically is, but the best kind possible, fun, well shot and cut, and has that TRASHER feel to it all around which I gather you dig. I figured this is my opportunity to suggest it !

Rosie

I'd love to hear what you think about the themes and messaging of this movie. I've watched it a few times and have never come to a firm conclusion on what it's trying to say, so I enjoy hearing any interpretations people have. Does Whiplash have a happy ending?! I would mostly argue "no," but I've seen a lot of different takes on it!

Alex Thrailkill

The structure as a whole honestly. It’s like the movie ends at the climax, it’s so interesting. I love rewatching this one, can’t wait!

Riddim

The director shared thoughs in an interview about what he thought could follow after the ending "I think there’s a certain amount of damage that will always have been done. Fletcher will always think he won and Andrew will be a sad, empty shell of a person and will die in his 30s of a drug overdose. I have a very dark view of where it goes."

How about animation?

James vs Cinema

I’d be more than happy to explore the philosophical themes too. If I can remember..passion, happiness, and the struggles to get there and what happens when you finally do…it’s complicated! Excited to dive back into it.

Rosie

Oh, that's really interesting! That's about how I interpreted the ending, so I'm glad the director agrees with me. I still love how nuanced and open-ended it is. Even if there's darkness on the horizon, Andrew is happy for those few minutes he gets to shine on stage. That's something, right?

Riddim

This circles back to when he says he'd rather die young and successful than old and forgotten. Maybe a genuine opinion but probably lacking perspective and insight.

Hi James. If you have not seen it yet, highly recommend checking out The Iron Claw. Went and saw it in theaters the other day and it ended up becoming my favorite film from 2023. Based on the true story of the Von Erich wrestling family and the Von Erich curse. It’s a completely a heartbreaking tragic, but is an incredible film. Also, stars Zac Efron (who gives an Oscar worthy performance), Jeremy Allen White, and Lily James.

My top favorite films from 2023: 1) The Iron Claw 2) The Holdovers 3) Killers of the Flower Moon 4) Oppenheimer 5) Air 6) Blackberry 7) Past Lives

Can’t wait to see you re-watch and breakdown Whiplash

Roque Orellana

You should check out Black Swan(2010) afterwards. They both deal with the obsseed artist, but the way each movie goes about telling the story is very interesting. Don't want to reveal much about black swan if you haven't seen it, but it's just as engaging. Also check out anatomy of a screenplays YT video on this comparison, gives some great analysis.

Valtteri Manala

It's been a while but to me personally the standout things were acting and lighting.

Matt

One of my favorite shots of all time is whan the Dad is watching the solo at the end and has this amazing look on his face, we don't actually know if its disbelief, joy, worry and realization that his son will probably become famous and end up like all his heros, all of the above, the amazing thing I think is its like 2 seconds and thats the shot of the movie thats burned into my brain

Matt

You should check out another film by the same director Damien Chazelle called FIRST MAN 2018 about Neil Armstrong, incredible production design, cinematography, directing, sound design, acting and one of my favorite modern film scores, its definitely inspiring to someone who love the art of making movies just as much as watching them😃

Tetley

Some good picks there. My favourite was Blackberry. Haven't seen the Iron Claw yet but Sean Durkin is a seriously legit filmmaker. Really impressed by everything else he's done.

Tetley

Great movie. It probably doesn't bear too much deconstructing but I always like to keep an eye on how filmmakers compose and edit scenes where actors - who may not be proficient musicians themselves - have to play musical instruments as part of their role. I'm pretty sure these days they do some intensive prep beforehand, so they at least have the fundamentals down pat.

Michael Garza

Where’s BCS? Dying for your reaction to the next ones

Spencer

HELL YES!

Landon Horner

I definitely think you should look at the lighting for important scenes and see the contrast between the ones that are mainly yellow and the ones that are mainly green

Spencer

I love how lean and mean the movie is in terms of screenplay, direction and editing, it clocks in at around 1:43 and it doesn't slow down. The soundtrack is fantastic with the jazz combined with intense undertones. The cinematography is also quite good with long takes and energetic editing.

Yo James check out blue eye samurai. 8 episode series on Netflix. Beautiful animation

Jakey James

He said it'll be back Jan 7th or 8th
