How effective was the Tiger really?

There are quite many debates about the Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausführung E & B - the Tiger & Königstiger - tanks, so in this video we look at how effective or ineffective these panzers were in combat. This means we look at doctrine, kill to loss ratios, mission accomplishment and various other issues. »» SUPPORT MHV «« » patreon - https://www.patreon.com/mhv » subscribe star - https://www.subscribestar.com/mhv » paypal donation - https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=TFHEY4P4YU3NY » Book Wishlist https://www.amazon.de/gp/registry/wishlist/3LJIXNJIUXJES/ref=cm_wl_huc_view »» MERCHANDISE - SPOILS OF WAR «« » shop - https://www.redbubble.com/people/mhvis/shop »» SOCIAL MEDIA «« » twitter - https://twitter.com/MilHiVisualized » facebook - https://www.facebook.com/milhistoryvisualized/ » twitch - https://www.twitch.tv/militaryhistoryvisualized » tumblr - http://militaryhistoryvisualized.tumblr.com/ » minds.com - https://www.minds.com/militaryhistoryvisualized Military History Visualized provides a series of short narrative and visual presentations like documentaries based on academic literature or sometimes primary sources. Videos are intended as introduction to military history, but also contain a lot of details for history buffs. Since the aim is to keep the episodes short and comprehensive some details are often cut. » SOURCES « Wilbeck, Christopher W.: Sledgehammers. I read the review you provided a link to and thought it a fair analysis. The other book I read recently and have somewhere on a shelf is Armored Thunderbolt by Zaloga. The criticism of the great "tank scandal" is that it was basically a myth. He states the U.S. got the M26 into combat as soon as possible. He is also more positive about the "Sherman" than other authors that I have read. I am trying to write a novel about RAF Bomber Command and have collected perhaps 50 to 100 books and plan to try to learn to fly a Lancaster on X-Plane. I am interested to know if anyone plays the new version of IL-2. I have but haven't tried the tank battles. I am retired but my old university has a very good collection of military books. So if you need me to look anything up then let me know. I wish I was not monolingual but when I joined the U.S. Army they offered me a chance to do prep school and then West Point. My score on the language aptitude test (for language schools) was two standard deviations below the mean. Keep up the good work.

do you know Bismarck / Military Aviation History, because this year he had some access to British WW2 bomber(s), did some videos on this. He is also an IL-2 "veteran". Thank you for the offer, currently, I having actually quite some trouble to sort through all the books I have now, also bought me a nice stack of German primary sources and very rare books.

Time for Trumpets by Charles MacDonald (Deputy Chief Historian of US Army) discusses how the German army used Tigers, Panthers and even Jagdpanthers as battering rams during the Battle of the Bulge. Most of the sledgehammer tactics were employed by units transferred from the Russian front. They were not very successful as after the tanks broke through they did not often have infantry support and were hunted down one by one and destroyed after nightfall. The tanks tried turning on their lights which just helped US tanks and bazooka teams find them. Mr. MacDonald was a company commander in this area during the BOB and has a rather unique perspective. He wrote a book which is still considered a classic of WW2 in the US -- called Company Commander.

yeah, the lack of infantry support was already the issue at Kursk or even earlier, e.g., in Stalingrad once the Panzergrenadiers were gone the Panzers were assigned to regular infantry, who didn't know much about the strength & weaknesses of tanks. I actually don't know, if the US and other forces also ran into that problem that their Armored Divisions ran out of infantry men, yet, not tanks.
