Clean Wehrmacht Myth: Necessary? feat. Prof. Neitzel

In this video Professor Neitzel discusses the Clean Wehrmacht Myth and if it was necessary for post-war Germany (Federal Republic of Germany - "West Germany") or not. Additionally, he also briefly talks about how Austria and the German Democratic Republic ("East Germany") dealt with former Wehrmacht veterans in their ranks. Disclaimer: I received a pre-release ebook of Prof. Neitzel’s Book “ Deutsche Krieger. Vom Kaiserreich zur Berliner Republik – eine Militärgeschichte ”. This was a really fascinating video and made a good comparison with the book 'The Myth of the Eastern Front'. Thank you!

It would be interesting to review the wartime career of Kurt Waldheim. As a teenager in the 1970s I was given the impression that Waldheim was a peacekeeping humanitarian. He led the United Nations for many years. I even remember that he tried to persuade the Beatles to come together for a one-off concert to help post-Pol Pot Cambodia . Then we suddenly learned Waldheim had been a Nazi. He fought on the Eastern front and later against the partisans in Yugoslavia. He was also present in Greece. These were violent bloody theatres of war. There was even a cruel joke circulating: What is Waldheim’s disease? The older you get, the more you forget you ever were a Nazi. Interestingly his lawyers made use of two contradictory defences. If he was implicated in direct atrocities, they argued the orders came from elsewhere and the soldiers on the ground were not responsible. If he was part of a central team issuing retaliatory orders, it was then argued the men on the ground were responsible, not the distant bureaucrats. How Waldheim later became Austrian President, I just don’t understand.

Military History Visualized

yeah, interesting definitely, yet, the question is how much of this is still military history? Also for me this stuff is absolutely no surprising in anymore, especially not in Austria, we have very open and obvious cover-ups going on currently as well. It is rather simple, most stuff is "glossed over" until most people (perpetrators and victims) are all dead. In Austria I think one politician noted that Waldheim's horse was in the SA, but not Waldheim himself or something along those lines. > How Waldheim later became Austrian President, I just don’t understand. this is from memory and this might be completely wrong: according to one teacher it came down to the fact that other countries told us that this should not be done and as such the Austrians were like "you are not gonna tell us what to do". Never underestimate the spite of Austrians.
