Why were we so wrong about Russia?

Before the Russian Invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 the Russian Armed Forces were generally portrayed as a capable and competent force by many analysts. The question is why and how did most analyst got it wrong? For this we talk with Stanimir Debrov (https://twitter.com/delfoo), who got it correct. Really very well put by Mr. Dobrev. I would say that biggest mental dissonance the western countries have towards Russia, is how this country perceives life in general. In Russia it's about being as invisible as possible - keep Your head down, pay bribes (which should be described as payments for exclusive content/services/goods to fit russian world), don't stand out, keep Your oppinion to Yourself. Probably the most astonishing thing to hear is that all the things, that were happening 70-100 years ago, still cripple russians to this day. All the stories I heard from my grandmother and my father still continue to be daily things there: on paper factory/division (pick one) seems strong and big, but in reality majority of the equipment is either broken, dismantled or being repaired. Same was during Stalin's rule, same factors are active nowadays. So there is no wonder why simple russians (who have no power or strong friends "roofs", as russians call them) are used to stealing from government (and then selling to anyone who needs it), because they get ridiculous wages, and both workers or soldiers have no other choice really. It's the only way to go by.
