In the next weeks I will be going to a tank museum. There I will interview a leopard 2A6(M) gunner. He also served as a loader on a Leopard 2A7.

He follows the war in Ukraine and is also well read about armored doctrine from other countries. Yet, he is currently a civilian.

Feel free to post your questions for him down below, I can't promise that we answer all but I will try to do my best.

PS: there likely won't be a video this week as stated, there is another postponement...

What are/were his tasks besides aiming, firing and loading? Did he learn the other Positions on a tank as well? What is/was the emergency protocol (tank got hit/is on fire/got penetrated and so on) on his position (if there was any special)? What is his favourite resting spot on or in the tank and why? What special skill/skills did he learn because of his job as a tanker that benefits him in the civilian wordl?

I've heard that Leopards are engineered and built as a defence tanks - their main role is to serve as a mobile firepoints - basically to and stop attacking tanks from Eastern block (even the gearbox is built with best reverse gear for this specific reason). Any truth in all of this?

There is certainly some truth on that, as it was doctrine . However that is only part of the story. They are also designed to leave their trenches and go on the offensive, as much as exploit. That is basically why they are main battle tanks
