It has been 10 days now since Alex and I took up a dog indeed, for a friend in need.

Our friend was traveling to get top surgery, and the second his flight took off his dog sitters bailed. Desperate for a sitter it was made clear that unless someone looked after this thing - it might very well starve to death.

People have told us we're good friends, that we're kind. I didn't feel we had a choice. What were we supposed to do? let the dog kick the bucket?

None of it feels like kindness to me because the fact is: I do not like dogs.

I am not a dog person.

I have a degree of fondness for well behaved dogs.

I can enjoy the company of a well behaved dog.

But I - do not - like dogs.

Looking after this animal has delivered me from "maybe a pug one day" all the way back to "over my dead body" status.

Friend was supposed to pick up dog two days ago but (of course) there were medical complications, flight cancellations, transit issues.

I need this dog out of my house. Yesterday. We might be kind last week and this week but this is very definitely a "never again" scenario.
