I didn't used to sketch things out back in the day - and while sometimes I managed to pull off some neat compositions more often then not I'd stop and move onto other things after a slipping up somehow.

With Wacom tablets your sketches can be as sloppy and abstract as you need them to be. With the major advantage being you can hide them with a click a button.
