CONTENT WARNING: Frank discussion of mental health, venting
Last Friday I put on a brave face, but the truth is I was feeling stressed about my health and finances. When I came home to work on comics I triggered myself.
I'm in the process of working with FML Comics' Natasha Natarajan to create a new website. Currently that means re-uploading the works I want to highlight.
Enter the 2017 diary comics:
Make no mistake there is a narrative to these comics and it is grim, grim, grim grim.
2017 was a year I won't soon forget. I became an insomniac, and suffered a complete mental breakdown in the face of indifference, annoyance, and a resistant family.
"Transitioning While On Fire” might be a good title for the overall body of work.
In short. The series is decidedly off brand. There is a hostile tone here, it felt like I had been buried alive and had to claw my way out no matter who got in the way.
...Before I could decide what to do I froze, detached, and ended up giving myself a cold sore. BUT! I caught it before it became a major flare up, it's already gone.
The delightful happy ending is the contrasting work of 2018.
Not only do I draw myself cute, I turn down the volume on the detail and crank the kindness up beyond all possible limits. This is the "doll face" version of myself, that emerged out of sheer necessity and is—quite frankly—a testament to my 2017 survival.
Anyway. All this to say I spent Monday resting. And I'm going to spend today resting too.
So there.
