While looking for B-Roll, I thought of this old commercial I had watched about a product called the "Gatebox" -- proposed as a solution to the problem of loneliness in Japan.

It's meant to market the product, and perhaps even be a little uplifting. But it gave me a profound sense of emptiness when I saw it the first time, and though I am loath to share negative feelings with you all, I think it provides a bit of insight into the upcoming video.

Japan is a beautiful country with incredible culture, but all is not well there, and deep societal problems combined with historical cycles form the basis for the trope of Godslaying as we know it, in Japan.

The video should be ready before the end of the week: it's about an hour and a half long, and has been very difficult to edit. I hope you will all enjoy it, and find it interesting!

Thank you for sharing this!! So ready for the new video! 🫶🏼

Ouroboros

I remember this vid. A few years back it was a frequent choice for people wanting show Japan as dystopian or wacky on the internet, usually paired with the Miku's Domino ad series. Honestly, I don't think this is actually that far from how Alexa and Siri already function, it just has a visual avatar and texting component added. I really wouldn't be surprised to see a "companionship" feature added to a popular home assistant in the west in the near future. I don't think finding companionship in virtual aides is inherently wrong, I loved my Poo-chi toy when I was younger. But having it be a complete replacement for real interaction is definitely troubling.
