Why Are There So Many Trans Characters in Japanese Games?

Happy Pride Month!

If you play a lot of Japanese games, or consume Japanese media, you might notice that there is quite an abundance of gender non-conforming, crossdressing, and trans characters... but not very many gay or lesbian characters, by comparison.

In the West, T acceptance has been much slower than LGB acceptance, but in the East, this trend is largely the opposite.

Why is that? And what does this have to do with video games?

In this Pride Month special, we'll be looking at the histories and development of characters like Birdo and Bridget to see what we can learn about cultural differences in the area of gender studies.

Join me in this (I hope) politically neutral and interesting look into Trans Characters in Japanese Games.

Thank you for your wonderful comment, Cynthia! I took some time to ponder it. In hindsight, I now wish the video addressed in more detail the topic you've brought up in your own thoughts : it was characters like Poison and Bridget, in spite of their flawed portrayals, that opened the door to understanding, and allowed for a more open dialogue on gender issues in Japan: though we may sometimes observe these dated portrayals as problematic, without them, we may not have characters like Beauty Nova. And without Beauty Nova, we may not have had gender non-conforming characters of such immense popularity like Grusha, Penny, or Rika in a mainline Pokémon game. These characters are, indeed, all important in the greater story of trans characters and gender issues in Japan. I hope the video can add, in its own way, a little bit to a gentler, more compassionate view of these characters in their whole contexts.

Thanks for the response Moony. (: I agree wholeheartedly. Only a couple years ago did I have an all-or-nothing mindset when it came to representation. Either they did it perfectly right first try or didn't try at all. But as I've grown more I've come to realise that there never really will be a 'perfect' portrayal. Videos like yours, I hope, help people understand that too. Some may say Birdo is a caricature but what about the trans women who ARE hyperfeminine? Some, including myself, have said Birdo's boy-crazy nature might seem to feed negative stereotypes of trans woman that they deceive men, but does Birdo not deserve to desire and search for love of her own? It's just as you said - Representation, as long as it's not egregiously bad like 👎 Villia from BoTW 👎, is really important. Change takes time, trial, and error.

My apologies to fans of scary-eyed Maya: the new thumbnail has been uploaded! How does it look? I might need to find someone to start working on these for me: I cannot design a thumbnail to save my life.
