So I think I'm done with this. It's not that Tefler has medical problems, that will happen to all of us. And even Douglas Adams struggled with writer's block. He said he used to stare at a blank page until his forehead bled. It's the distain and contempt he has for his paying fans, who he only communicates with when he breaks yet ANOTHER promise and places another advanced charge. It's how a 5-year old deals with responsibility after doing something wrong. So I'm going to stop my subscription and come back in a year, and maybe by that time, he'll have finished some of the chapters I've already paid for. See you all in July 2025...

I understand the need for income, but you’re pushing too hard with the placeholders, IMO. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t receive a monthly income, but as has been pointed out, you’ve now charged for 6+ chapters that haven’t been written, yet, and which you won’t receive future income for. My concern isn’t that you’re requesting income now to be able to continue writing, but that you’re putting too much pressure on yourself and your readers into the future. I would respectfully request that you might consider not doing this again until you at least start to catch up with what’s owed, and if you need more funds in the meantime, to either request donations or to request subscribers to give a bit more for the next (singular) placeholder that you put in after making a bit of progress in erasing the existing chapter debt, such as finishing 169 & 170? I personally wouldn’t have a problem with placeholders in the future if the number of placeholders posted is less than the number of chapters delivered, but again, I can’t speak for anyone else. The continuing inverse pattern, however, is problematic.

I made the following quote in a comment a week or so ago: "You forgot the pre-charges for Chapters 175 and 176, the obligatory apology and the promise to catch-up in July, followed by radio silence until August 1st when the cycle repeats." That was supposed to be hyperbole, not an accurate prediction! The only reason I'm still here is that I downgraded my membership to $1 maximum per month and $12 a year is *juuuust* about worth it for for a few scattered chapters and the drama in the comment section.

That having been said, battling against bad health and worrying about financial survival is a toxic mixture. That Tefler finds the strength to continue writing is impressive. The fact that his writing remains so tremendously engaging is astounding. It is not unusual for writers to receive advances on new books. I see the entire situation in that light. My personal expense to pay these advances is not going to break the bank. I would rather be supportive and hope for many new and exciting chapters.

Less than a year ago, you promised that you'd never do placeholders again. Now, you're 7 chapters behind.... Do things like honesty and trustworthiness mean anything to you? Do you really hold such contempt and disregard for your supporters? You're too far back, and this has been too long. I've been running a maximum of one chapter per month for a while now, but even that is too much considering your current behavior. I'll check back in at the end of the year to see if you've even come close to catching up to what I've already paid for, but at this point I seriously doubt it. With your pace from the last two years, it'll be well into 2025 before you finish putting out what you've already charged people for.

Hah as I expected, another month, another 2 placeholders. Tef I get that it's hard to write sometimes but as quite a few have pointed out the health issues posted here and dragged out seem to indicate either your creative flair is being applied to lying to us, or you're being extremely passive to resolve your own health problems (which is pretty weird to anyone with a sane mind). That being said, to all members who are dissatisfied with the placeholders, you COULD report him to Patreon, but hey we'd lose a source of great stories (where else do we track him?). OR... you could just cancel your membership and drop it to free membership. Tef stops getting your money and you still get notifications of his posts here. Come back every (few?) months and upgrade membership to read all the posts again lol. And yes by cancelling/changing to free you still get access to everything here once you re upgrade. Actions speak louder than words. Just do it, since complaining just reinforces the saying "sticks and stones may hurt my bones, but words will never hurt me". Just go to settings then memberships and cancel your membership to tefler. Keep as free membership. Done. So you lose access to the comments. Big deal. Catch up when you decide to re-upgrade.

I understand everyone’s frustration it’s like we keep waiting for a payoff that doesn’t come, but I also understand what it’s like to be so physically disabled that you are unable to do the simplest things, let alone work and seriously concentrate. I’m not threatening to leave, I truly love the story, so unless it gets crazy, I won’t. But take it as a suggestion or a request, please give us (your subscribers) like a weekly update, if for nothing else, but to let us know you’re still here and concerned with the story, and you’re still interested, that it’s worth us keeping our subscription, and you care. It’s hard to feel like that when we only hear from you once a month.

I was going to keep out of this ,but I just had a total knee replacement done in this past November a heart procedure done in April this year and caught pneumonia just in the past 3 weeks. With my knee I was wiped out for 9 weeks sleep and pain pill’s then PT I could not do anything at all. Heart procedure kind of did me in for 4 weeks. Pneumonia like I said not there yet. So where am I going if Tefler is having so much issues with this I am good for now but he Should say hi once in a while. I am from Canada so know about wait times when it comes to medical issues and appointments. Darn my wife need a MRI done on her left knee just got the appointment last week November 2025 go figure that out. Tefler communication is the best way get well but talk to us……..

One way to limit multiple placeholders is to go to your subscription and change it to one charge per month, that way he can't hit you with dual placeholders on the 1st of every month, which is when he collects his welfare checks. You'll get a partial chapter in the last hour of the last day of the month, then two placeholders in the first hour of the first day of the month, giving him $15,000, or at the least $10,000 per month for a half chapter or less...This is not accidental, he knows exactly what he's doing, and he's laughing every step of the way!!!

I can see I have my work cut out for me. Having beat down the bitches, whiners, complainers, moralizers, and otherwise moronic individuals in the comments to "Ch. 175 (Placeholder)," I see they have only popped back up here. Many of the idiots are the same individuals commenting on here in "Ch. 176 (Placeholder);" it is like playing whack-a-moron. Let us see if we can help educate a few individuals. We shall first attempt utilizing reason. I realize that few of them read at a level necessary to understand reason, but we shall be charitable and attempt to enlighten them anyway. PART ONE: WHERE WE ARE A. Tefler is Behind Yes, yes; We all know this. However, he has been a ridiculously productive author, giving us years of fantastic content. He writes chapters up to ten times larger than many serials and does not consider a chapter complete (especially battle chapters) until it meets his standards. I respect that. His latest chapter, Ch 169, is substantial. He has not skimped on the action scenes, and I frankly have no idea how it will end. He could have easily broken this into three chapters and helped catch up on his backlog. But he is the writer and the artist: I will defer to his judgment here. I am not upset that he is six or seven chapters behind (depending on how one chooses to count). But I can understand those who are disappointed. Delayed gratification is hard. B. Tefler Does Not Communicate Well With His Fans He has indicated that his reasons for being behind are his health, his wife's health, family emergencies, and other reasons. He does not communicate with his fans well, having gone weeks and weeks without communicating or even letting us know he is alive. Fair point. At the same time, I don't walk in his shoes or struggle with his demons, whatever they may be. I am impressed that he continues putting out content given his struggles and in the face of the cruel and frothing comments directed towards him posted below. It is hard enough to be a writer and publish as much as he has on this series (reference George R.R. Martin, among others). But he keeps at it, and his quality is still very high. Like many here, I prefer he posts more frequently to inform us about his struggles. I am not him, and I do not know what prevents him from doing so. I know that he wants to complete things quicker. I know that he sets goals for himself, and when he doesn't meet them, he feels defeated. I know what it is like to be weighed down on perceived failures. Given his otherwise excellent track record and the quality of the work that he continues to publish, I choose to continue giving him the benefit of the doubt. I can respect others if they decide not to give him the benefit of the doubt. I would prefer he continue to write rather than become despondent over a few "fan" comments and quit altogether. C. Many Of The Complainers Feel Moral Injury I see repeatedly in the posts of the habitually disgruntled appeals to morality or misplaced legal constructs that "placeholders are cheating," "charging in advance is against the law," or other iterations of similar concepts. Some are artfully presented, but most are dark and poorly presented. I can understand their initial disappointment. I can understand if people choose to end their patronage over this issue. Several people have left over this, and I do not blame them for their decision. However, given that this has happened for 18 months, any patrons still complaining are foolish. Can one continue to claim such injury when this has become the norm and the complainers continue to subscribe? At best, this is disingenuous. Most of Tefler's supporters remain supporters and do not complain. Of the 4,362 current Tefler patrons, only a handful spend any significant time bitching, moaning, and whining. With morality being a human construct, it would appear that the community of Tefler supporters has chosen to disagree with the judgment of a few, choosing not to consider placeholders as "cheating." PART TWO: WHAT TO DO The reasonable response to feeling that the value proposition of your subscription to Tefler is not worth it is to adjust the value you spend or to end your patronage altogether. The unhinged and perhaps pathological response is to continue to subscribe and maintain the same level of support while constantly complaining about how unfair, unethical, unlawful, immoral, or wholly inappropriate it is for Tefler to do what he has been doing for the past 18 months. With this in mind, there are several avenues available to sane individuals. A. Unsubscribe If you want total control over what you are charged by Tefler, you can always unsubscribe. This is a simple act. All one needs to do is cancel their subscription by going to their settings page, clicking on the "Memberships" tab, scrolling down to their Tefler membership, selecting the "View Details" button, and then clicking on the "Cancel membership" button. Answer a question or two, send a nasty message if you want, and viola! Your membership is canceled. No more worries about placeholders. Assuming you would like to read new content at or near the time it is posted, you can monitor Tefler's Patron pages, and if new content appears, you can always resubscribe. This is a very simple process and a simple solution to ending all the chest-beating, wailing in the dark, and feeling completely unappreciated and unloved. You may still be unappreciated and unloved, but that is beyond the scope of this comment. B. Limit Your Contribution If you are concerned about how much you voluntarily contribute to Tefler in any given month, you can limit the amount per charged post you contribute at any time (I am sure everyone knows this). This is also a very simple process. In addition to reducing the amount per charged post, you can limit the number of posts you can be charged for in any given month. What?? Is that possible??? Why, yes, my confused fellow patron, it is: I will outline the procedure for those who find this information dazzlingly new. To limit the number of posts you can be charged for in a given month, go to your settings page, click on the "Memberships" tab, scroll to your Tefler membership, and click on the "View Details" button. To the right of the "Payment Amount" heading is an option to "edit." Clicking on the blue-lettered "edit" label, you can change your payment amount, and there is a check box option to "Set a monthly limit." You can change the limit to however many you desire by checking the check box and selecting a number. People who reduce their monthly limit to one charge per month are paying Tefler the equivalent of a monthly subscription. C. Do Nothing If you feel that Tefler's current practices are taking advantage of you, you can also do nothing. This seems silly because it is entirely in your power to change the dynamic by taking the steps outlined in sections A and B above. However, learned helplessness is a thing, and I will not judge you if you choose to do nothing. However, if you do nothing and continue to whine... PART THREE: CONTINUED WHINING If, having reviewed the above, you choose to continue your patronage while continuing to whine, bitch moan, and complain in the comments, then it is undoubtedly your choice to spend your limited time claiming to be a victim and wailing to the heavens about the abuse you are suffering. However, please be advised that we are all on to you now. I, for one, have no sympathy for your plaintive cries. I will mock you at every chance and laugh at the stupidity you display through your poorly reasoned and barely intelligible comments. I encourage my fellow genuine Tefler supporters to laugh at you each time they encounter your pathetic posts and to up their contributions to Tefler as a protest against your continued stupidity. Just to clarify a few comments made; ie. You're getting a story for pennies and cancellation! Let's assume that the average contribution is $2.00 per chapter and you have been a supporter for 3 years, then each person has paid $72.00 for an unfinished tome. Hardly pennies and I don't recall paying that much even for a Trilogy. However we have been in this so far as supporters of a very talented author and not for the perceived payback for the contributions we have made. Even so, even the most naive person would surely admit that Tefler has been uncommunicative and offering unfulfilled promises. The biggest problem however rests with Patreon. If members cancel their subscription to Tefler they will not receive the chapters they have already paid for via placeholders!

So far, we have placeholders for chapters with no content yet completed for Chapters 170, 171, 172, 173, 174, 175, and 176 -- seven (7) chapters charged for with no content yet seen. Not to mention that Chapter 169 has also been charged ahead for and is not yet fully completed. At a bit over 7,000 per chapter (according to information from Patreon on the per-update revenue), that's over 49,000 in income for work not yet completed. That's equivalent to a middle to upper-middle class hourly wage employee getting a year or more advance on their wages. I'd struggle to fit through doors with the kind of balls I'd have to have to ask for a year's advance from my employer, but that's essentially what Tefler has allowed himself to do.

My sister-in-law went to England and forgot to bring her diabetes meds, they would not give her any because Americans rely too much on medication. Her foot swelled up to the size of an American football and they wanted to amputate. Our family doctor who we have had for 39 years vetoed that and told her to come home. To all the patron's that are unhappy about being charged for placeholder's, do exactly as Robster said to do in his comment. I have been doing this since January and am able to check my Patreon member page to see if Tefler has written anything. I have chosen not to pay for placeholder's or partial chapters. When Tefler has something new I upgrade my membership and pay again.

I desperately want more chapters, but placeholders don’t irritate me too much. Tefler had written over 130 chapters before I joined Patreon. So I received 130 chapters for free. If it reaches the point of 130 placeholders, I’ll decide if it’s worth getting upset. I hope Tefler’s getting better, even if we never see another chapter.

Limit exposure to reduce frustration in being left with as yet to be fulfilled promises. Find authors like Funatic and Kaiserwolf. 700/1722 chapters in on The Gamer from Funatic and only going to be checking on Tef every couple of months. Would miss storyline here coming to an end but not as much as Tef would not getting paid to write it....

So I reckon it's a pretty solid bet that on the 31st he will release ... oh I don't know ... 2 or maybe 3 chapters and then precharge us for another 2. I know you guys hate placeholders but my goldfish died and my backlawn was infested with weeds and this one time - I got a headache and I just couldn't do any more work.

All I see is John making the other Prog bleed, and then the chapter 169 Alyssa is groaning and so is John. When did the Prog counterattack?? It’s not in 168??

To limit the number of times you can be charged per month before the end of the year to take care of that pesky second placeholder. Go to Membership -> Edit -> Payment Amount -> Set Monthly Limit and enter "1".

Almost 11 months ago, you said, as you created the placeholder for chapter 176 "... I will catch up ... it will take a few months..." We are all sympathetic to your health issues. I sincerely hope that you will consider breaking your long chapters into a series of two, three or four shorter ones. This way, you could catch up within the next year. You write a great story, and we are all waiting for more chapters. I am looking forward to seeing what you present at the end of this month.
