Regarding what Mayuri said about bankai being unfixable - they kinda glossed over a couple extra bits of info that were in the manga. Bankai are indeed not fixable if they are damaged. You can see this in Renji's bankai after he fights Byakuya; Byakuya broke a few of the detachable pieces of his bankai and if you go through and count them, those pieces are still missing to this day. Along with that, Ikkaku's bankai was also damaged in his fight against that fraccion, and it is still permanently damaged despite the fact that he hasn't really used it. I believe Akon is the one who repaired Ikkaku's bankai, but I might be remembering wrong

This episode is good callback to soul reapers thinking Ichigo looked like Kaien Shiba! It’s because Kaien and Ichigo are cousins! This also kinda proves why Ichigo was able to progress so quickly with his Soul Reaper powers. The Soul Reaper genes he has are from his noble heritage

Soul Society is the name of the realm of the dead, not the military. The military is the Gotei 13, an organization within Soul Society. The Gotei 13 are Balancers who purify Hollows, perform Konsos to the dead and protect the souls and humans. Squad 0 is the Royal Guards, who protect the Soul King and have other important jobs. The Soul King is a lynchpin, as stated by Urahara. Removing the lynchpin causes a collapse of the whole system. The anime skipped a part of Kurotsuchi‘s dialogue where we learn that Renji‘s Bankai is permanenty broken from his fight with Byakuya (and Yylfordt) and Ikkaku‘s Bankai being permanently weakened from his fight with Edrad. That’s also when Ichigo learns about Ikkaku having a Bankai.

I always wondered if his bankai was intentionally supposed to function like that - it seemed like one big attack was all it was good for once it was "charged" and then it gets permanently damaged? I wonder if the fact that he intentionally chooses not to use it makes it weaker in general.

A few notes: A part of the manga chapter wasn't included in this episode. Mayuri gives Ichigo examples of how damaged bankai are never the same again. He cites Renji's bankai being damaged by Byakuya as well as Ikkaku's bankai being damaged by Edorad. Their bankai were permanently missing pieces and became significantly weaker. Ichigo is then surprised by this information as he did not know about Ikkaku's bankai, to which Mayuri responds "Oops I think that was supposed to be a secret or something" LOL. In Bleach OG, Episode 41: Do you guys remember when Ukitake was shocked to see Ichigo for the first time? It was on the bridge...Ukitake asked Byakuya "Who is he?" to which Byakuya replied "He is not related....at least not to the one you're thinking of right now." Well it turns out Byakuya was wrong. Ichigo is related to Kaien as you guys figured out. Of course Rukia didn't know this at all but Ichigo always reminded her of Kaien. It all makes sense now. TYBW is the GOAT arc of reveals!
