Oh boy, this reveal had so many tiny hints throughout the series: 1. Back in the Soul Society arc, when Kenpachi fought to a draw with Ichigo, he mentions how he named Yachiru (his lieutenant) after "the person he most admired." Now you know who it was. 2. At the end of the Soul Society arc, a couple one off characters were complaining about the food in the Squad 4 barracks - Unohana shows up to say "remember your life is in our hands" - you could take this two ways: one, a doctor telling you that I CAN let you die, or I'm the first Kenpachi and I WILL kill you. 3. During Hueco Mundo, the execution squad comes across Unohana and Isane trying to heal Chad and the Arrancar, notice how he fought everyone else, but he stares down Unohana for a few seconds and says "nah we're leaving" 5. During the Turn Back the Pendelum arc, Ukitake and Shunsui are mentioning that "we, along with Yamamoto, are some of the oldest in Soul Society" and Ukitake corrects him to say "don't forget Unohana!" and she sneaks up on them and says "oh what are we talking about?" And they PANIC. 6. This one is kinda side-content but there were data books released in the early arcs of Bleach that show the stats of all the captains: Unohana's swordsmanship was at 100. 7. Kubo also mentioned in an interview that the moment Aizen and Unohana meet up in the Central 46 underground barracks after he defects, Aizen didn't fight her because while Aizen thinks he could beat her, it would exhaust him too much to be worth it. And you're correct in that Zanjutsu is just "basic fighting style with a zanpakuto" — Zaraki just straight up swings his sword with one hand and doesn't actually use any forms or technique, he's just a kid with a stick swinging it around, he's just so strong that it actually works 99.9999% of the time.

Reminder when Aizen revealed himself alive to Hitsugaya, stabbed Hinamori. He destroyed Hitsugaya, he laughed it off. The only person he did not try to fight was Unohana.

Also an additional point that forgot to add up above: Tenjiro (after coming down with the rest of squad zero) has a conversation with Unohana and mentions that "healing isn't what you should be doing right now" implying that she should be doing something else, which as you can see from this episode, is killing people 😂 I like to joke that Yamamoto was constantly keeping her on a leash because if she went out and fought she'd just slaughter everyone, he didn't want her relapsing 😂

Love the reaction as always! Going back and watching those early soul society arc flashbacks with Yachiru and Zaraki are gold, the 2nd watch of this show is better than the 1st in my opinion with the foreshadowing

The cool thing with Unohana's reveal of being the first Kenpachi, is that there were little hints. Like the name that we've known her by "Retsu" Unohana, Retsu means "violent" or "fierce". So that was a pretty big clue, that there was more going on. And the other things have already been mentioned in the comments.

Unohana being crazy strong was hinted years before the TYBW arc began in 2012. Databooks revealed her as the third statistically strongest of the 13 captains during the Soul Society arc, with Zanjutsu being her specialty. The databooks also revealed that Zaraki was afraid of her.

One of the fun hints was the Zanpaukto rebellion arc, you'll notice a hooded figure in the background that looks like death. After the reveal, this made so much sense because Kubo had given notes as to the designs

A few notes ya'll: In OG Bleach ep 40: Flashback of Kenpachi drawing the kanji "Yachiru" in the ground, as he talks to the little girl and gives her that name. He states "It's the name of the one person I wish to be like"....this foreshadows Unohana. Ep 196: Leader of Exequias, Rudbornne withdraws and leaves when Unohana arrives to Hueco Mundo with the other captains. He says " It seems a very sensible captain in Retsu Unohana has appeared before us. We're leaving." They must've been informed by Aizen of how scary and powerful she is and they got scared off. Ep 206: In Turn Back The Pendelum arc, Kyoraku lists the only people who have been captains for over 100 years but forgets to name Unohana. After Ukitake reminds him, he goes "Oops I'll get scolded for forgetting about my senior, how scary would that be..." then Unohana sneaks up from behind and spooks them "What you guys talking about?" Other various moments like in ep 63 people complaining about food and Unohana scares them "Remember that your life is in my hands" and in ep 288 giving Ichigo that same gentle but scary smile as she has to tell him twice "Kurosaki san I said I think you should let me run in front of you." What makes it even funnier is the way she's speaking is in "keigo" or formal/polite form japanese when she doesn't have to knowing the badass thug she really is.
