A Quincy like Bambietta needs to be fully dead in order for Giselle to turn her into a zombie, while a Shinigami like Toshiro can be turned anytime if they get hit by her blood. This was explained halfway into the episode.

Here's the first hint that Gigi is, in fact, a man: he uses "Boku" (meaning "I") to refer to himself, which is used by young men or men who want to "appear" younger. Tomboy women can sometimes use it to refer to themselves as well, so I'm sure Kubo threw that in there to throw people off. Still, again, the other hint is that everything about Gigi isn't tomboyish at all, so why would he use it unless he's actually a man? Shout out to Charlotte Chuhlhourne's VA, the man commits to the role.

giselle is a trans woman but the way kubo tried to depict that aspect of her is questionable and it’s why people refuse to acknowledge that she is despite being referred, seen as a girl by her peers and even enemies (except yumichika because he is a petty jerk)

Yeah Marching out the Zombies is a little side part of TYBW, it was a bit jarring at first especially since it throws the vibe of TYBW off a bit but honestly I think it’s a good thing to have something different like this to kinda reset the story and viewers and it’s still with that TYBW production and pacing so they made something minimal into pretty awesome. Had this been OG Bleach the pacing and stuff would’ve dragged probably

Yeah if that's the case, it's strange to have the "good" guys in the show use that as an insult if representation is the goal 😕

Japan doesn't have the same politics or hang ups that we do in the west. I highly doubt representation was the last thing on Kubo's mind. He did it because he likely thought it would be interesting. There is such a thing in Japan as a "Otoko no musume" (Male daughter) which is it's own Japanese subculturally thing. And even then Gigi still uses male pronouns. Yumichika is a petty jerk? They came into his home, killed his head captain, his friends, his squad members and Gigi specifically turned them into zombies that had to end up being killed by Mayuri. And this on top of them destroying the balance of souls due to what they do to hollows. Yumichika can call him whatever he wants, who cares about Gigi's (a sadistic, violent, abusive psychopath) feelings.

@BP Totally agree with you. Yumichika just did what all the Bleach characters have done since the beginning, trashtalking. Hitting the enemy where it hurts. And Gigi is one of the worst. Even putting aside everything she has done to the soul reapers, what she did to Bambi, her "friend", is absolutely abhorrent. She gleefully squeezed the life out of her, literally, then continued to abuse her. She is an actual psychopath.
 So in this instance I have no problem with Yumichika calling her whatever he wants to call her. Plus I doubt Yumichika actually has a problem with it. He is pretty flamboyant himself. And during his fight with Charlotte, iirc he never mentioned anything about his gender, only that he found him ugly. The same way he did with Ganju.
