The flashback in the beginning gives a lot of important information, but it goes very fast (and theres's a lot of stuff happening in the episode overall, lol). But one good thing to note is what Yhwach says about where one can be free from the circle of life and death. Without any spoilers, we now know that all dead quincy's go to Yhwach, but not only that, he feels their fears and "agonising cries" at their time of death every time someone dies and goes to him. Yhwach is essentially asking "Why did my father create a world where I have to feel these things and live through this hell?" This is also why he completely rejects Ichibei's proposal to have non agression pact between the Soul Reapers and Lichtreich, even though it would allow the quincy's to do whatever they wanted in the world of the living. For Yhwach it had always been about himself and more specifically about creating a world where the cycle of life and death doesn't exist, so he doesn't have to experience the feelings and fears and every dying quincy (which possibly messed him up a bit in the head, since he has experienced this since he was a baby).

The flashback at the beginning shows us that the balance of the souls was never the point of discussion between the Shinigamis and the Quincies in the first place. So the point of view and the story we got from the Shinigami side were blatantly false. Oetsu's sword - Sayafushi - is a base zanpakuto. It's not even Shikai. As Nimaya said in Cour 1, he only forges Asauchi. I believe that the medallion Yhwach threw to escape the cage is the one that holds Yama's Bankai.
