This episode shows how sometimes matchups can play a part. Pernida just casually low diffed Kenpachi lol. Mayuri's Shikai makes your limbs paralyse that why he stabbed Kenny, but since that was not enough, he used the sound to paralyse Zaraki's entire body. The reason why Pernida is with Yhwach was revealed in ep 24 of Cour 2. When Ichibei went to have a discussion with Yhwach, the former sealed away the latter's Almighty by giving him the Soul King's left arm in exchange. This altered Bankai is what Mayuri was creating in ep 13 of Cour 1. It was hinted at and was not followed up until now.

Mayuri's best matchups are against enemies that have gimmicky abilities, because he can somehow always out-gimmick and counter their ability, pretty much the opposite of Kenpachi, who just charges in with brute strength. They make a good team together lol, ultimate strength + ultimate utility

MVP GREEN

Kenpachi Zaraki had his eyepatch on, didn't use ryodan (two hand strike) and didn't even use his shikai. He was written to lose to Base Pernida due to his arrogance not strength or matchup.

That comment from Mayuri after his sun suit explodes is both cheeky and so meta. It's like Kubo and the studio saying, "Look, we're really cooking with this fight right now, so ain't no way we're gonna blow the pacing on some niche exposition!!!"

Kenpachi is not Oh-Etsu, especially considering his behaviour. Kenny loves his fights, he ain't going to blitz Pernida.

This was my favorite fight in the manga. Although I didn’t care for the usage of cgi in certain scenes, this was epic. Don’t tell anyone but Kurotsuchi is my favorite captain.
