I think you guys are forgetting that Grimmjow is the one who saved Kisuke, Orihime and Chad in cour 1 when they were in Hueco Mundo fighting vs Quilge the Jail. and then they teased him again in episode 8 when Squad 0 was introduced. Kisuke mentions they came to an agreement then.

is it luck though? Nel said something along the lines, that one of the outcomes Urahara predicted did actually happen, that's why she was still there in the first place and not with Ichigo, eventhough she wanted to be. Urahara did say he likes to be prepared for every possibilty.

Yeah at the moment he had doubt that she would be able to save them, but he still planned it, so it wasn't luck. He was prepared but sometimes no matter how prepared you are doubt can creep in.
