Here we fucking go! One of my favorite episodes of the season!

Kisuke01

Pike is a demon I would've slowly turned to her like no you didn't

Suplee215

Charlie totally fits. Its a show where Stephanie Beatriz voices a violent lesbian. Totally fits

EDHPlayer

Zerxus glosses over his own hubris; he believed he could change a god, a being that had lived unchanged for generations. So of course his hubris would tear its ugly head the moment it shouldn’t. He was so confident in his victory he gave up information for free. Any one else may have counted Pike’s inquiry as a question, but he didn’t, and it led to his loss. Fantastic writing

To be fair, the deal was "I will give you the vestige if you beat my game" - Zerxus never said anything about letting Vox Machina leave Hell unscathed. That being said I love this episode and the nod to EXU Calamity (a mini-campaign I HIGHLY recommend everyone watches if they have the time and emotional fortitude). The next reaction is going to be AWESOME

7:03 - Idk if this was intentional, but Pike's demon disguise closely resembles the Sasquatch character from Capcom's fighting game "Darkstalkers". 26:52 - This whole sequence is just MASTERFUL. The stainglass visual, Luis Carazo's perfomance, THE MUSIC! One of if not my favorite scene from season 3. As I mentioned before, Zerxus did not originate in Campaign one, but is a player character from a mini series called "Exandria Unlimited : Calamity". This sequence loosely retells the miniseries. 27:00 - It's believed the 3 figures seen here are meant to represent the 3 main DMs of Critical Role - Matt Mercer, Brennan Lee Mulligan (who DM'd Calamity), and Aabria Iyengar. Also the stain glass motif is a reference to the character art used in Calamity. 27:10 - The Brass Ring was the name of the player's team which consisted of (from left to right of the stain glass image): Cerrit Agrupinin -A Rogue Eisfuura played by Travis Willingham, Patia Por'co - A Wizard Elf played by Marisha Ray Loquatius Seelie - A Warlock/Bard Changeling played by Sam Riegel Laerryn Coramar-Seelie - A Wizard Elf played by Aabria Iyengar Nydas Okiro - A Sorcerer/Bard Human played by Lou Wilson and though not featured in the stain glass, the last member of the Brass Ring: Zerxus Ilerez - A Paladin (oath of redemption) Human played by Luis Carazo 27:37 - idk how different this will be to Calamity, but the "Lord of Torment" in this retelling was known as Asmodeus, The King of the Hells and Lies in the original campaign. Contrast to what's shown here, Asmodeus is often depicted as beautiful in the eyes of those he tries to deceive. 32:16 - "We are his blood." You may recognize this little line AAAALL the way back in season 1, spoken by a certain Necromancer. 👀 33:00 - TECHNICALLY he didnt break any rules. The game was to acquire the Plate of the Dawnmatyr, he never said he was going to let them leave alive. lol

"That's not fair!" - Welcome to Hell. He's a demon! Also not the *main* devil. That's the Lord of Torment, a betrayer god. He's simply a very highly-valued devil in his realm. You learn more if you ever watch Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, which is a very short mini-campaign (only 4 episodes), and doesn't involve much prior knowledge before diving in cause it's a prequel. The best way I can describe who Zerxus is is that he was there at the start of the Calamity, an era in which the Prime Deities (like the Everlight, Dawnfather & Matron of Ravens) went to war with their siblings, the Betrayer Gods (like the Lord of Torment, who I think is the only one we've heard of so far), who wanted to destroy humanity. Whether or not he's telling the whole truth about the circumstances that led to the Calamity, we'll see (hopefully, if they manage to tell more stories in this world). But yeah, some really exciting lore backing up this one.

Technically speaking, Zerxus did follow the rules of the game. If Pyke won, she'd get the Plate. If he won, he'd get her soul and those of her friends. He lost the game and she got the Plate. But the rules didn't say that he couldn't kill her friends once the game was over, with only Pyke being the one who is spared. But keep in mind what he just said at the end... "We are his blood". That phrase was said before... back in Season 1 with the Briarwoods... and who they worshiped.

I get what you're referring to, Elijah: Keyleth's disguise resembles the stereotypical pop culture version of the "W" hailing from various North American Native traditions. Thing is, "That" (I don't know how else to refer to "W" without being offensive) is a VERY sensitive topic of discussion. It's deeply taboo, and it gets even more controversial when non-indigenous persons talk about "That". On another note, the monstrous deer-look seems to have been popularized by 'Supernatural' of all things. Great representation of Native cultures in modern media, for sure...

Chet Bliese

Interesting how hell in popular culture is filled with deals, wagers, contracts, etc... It's like, "we're evil, but fair to the letter of the law"

Rupert Anderson Jr

No rules were broken. Zerxus gave Pike the armor fair and square. However, there were no further deals made, or discussions had about the guarantee of their safety on the way out. He is a demon after all, they can be tricky like that. By the way, if you ever have the time, I recommend watching EXU: Calamity mini campaign. Its 4 episodes.

silentinfinity

Would love to see you watch that miniseries

Sev the Hollow

This is the first time I'm hearing that particular monter is being offensive or very sensetive topic of discussion. All the times I heard about legends and myths of them and other monsters say Skinwalkers for example I and other people found them fascinating and never did I hear that being the case of it being taboo so for the sake of me not sounding rude i'll try not to say the name. Do I sound rude? If that's the case I'm not trying too but just curious as I said this is the first time I'm hearing someone say that speaking about that particular monster is taboo. I've seen the "accurate" version of it in Until Dawn but I guess for me design wise I would go with the commonly seen one, though I guess I'll have to pick up Supernatural again cause I haven't seen it in the show yet

Rachel Mae

NSAFs when you’re here you’re family lmaooo this was definitely one of my favorite episodes but that may largely be bc I love Ashley and by extension Pike

Ryan

Sing it with me, folks! "Bunnies, bunnies, it must be bunnies!"

Ferret

Don't worry too much about it Sev, a lot of people don't realize how sensitive the issue is. This particular monster doesn't actually come up that often in horror media, and when it does there isn't really a vocal and public backlash from indigenous communities about it (or at least, none that get any media coverage). But it is still widely regarded as a disrespectful and appropriative use of the myths.

Ferret

Hell operates on rules, but it very much operates on the letter of the rules rather than the spirit.

Suplee215

Letting them leave was not part of the rules of the game. Game is over. Yea punk move though. Also those were not the first time you heard the words he used at the end.

Jim Bruening

Next episode is so so so much fun. Can't wait.

Suplee215

Part of why it is offensive is that the traditional folklore of it and the popular depictions of it are very different. The antlers for example is not really part of the folklore. The orginal story that made the story popular was very problematic in how it depicted native Americans as the savage stereotype and future authors dont change it too much. The big issue is it is used mostly by white authors as a bad guy for white heroes to fight a native American inspired villain with usually no native American rep on the protagonist side which creates a very one sided cultural apporatutuon of the topic.

Aineyn

I mean, it was for Pike, but he did tell his demon to let her leave. The rest of the gang didn't play, so they are fair game! Loophole! ^_^
