Oh boy...

EDHPlayer

Oh boy, THIS episode. Unlike the episode of Vex dying, THIS one isn’t at the end of the batch but the START, meaning they fully intended for it to stick rather than let it stew.

BeastialMoon

OK using the 8 ball and having it be accurate is SO unintentionally funny

L Frances

Something to bear in mind, and this season is a very brutal reminder of it: Player Characters do permanently die in D&D, and it happens more than once in Critical Role. Don't assume any of them are safe, cause they never are. Fun thing about the whole Pike blood thing: That's a mystery to even seasoned viewers of CR. Whatever it is, it wasn't originally revealed or made clear in the initial campaign, so we're really in exciting new territory here!

Rye-Ah

Ah, this episode, our not-so-friendly reminder that these fools do not have plot armour - in the classical sense anyway We get near deaths like Keyleth (heroically shish-kebab'd herself with necromantic magic), Pike (skewered by her buddies), and Scanlan (pretended to be a Dragon Pancake™), and one actual death/revival with Vex. Based on the clues we get in that final scene, it's safe to say that Percy's situation is a different mess entirely

Eliteguard99

I don't like Ripley, but I understand her point of view. If only the wealthy and powerful can learn magic and serve the interests of the elite, what's to stop them from sending a small group of wizards to a small remote village when that village steps even a little out of line? Ripley wants everyone to have the power to defend themselves, not just the wealthy elite. Ripley is wrong, but her goal and methods are understandable given her past experiences. Ripley is a great antagonist.

Dragon0921

That Magic 8 Ball may have been on to something. 👀💦 2:25 - The assembly is referring to the "Cerberus Assembly", a group of powerful mages with goals to obtain power and advance political influence within the Dwendalian Empire in the Continent of Wildemount. 2:58 - This mage is believed to be a character named Trent Ikithon who, along with the Assembly, will most likely play a major role in the Mighty Nein animated series and is closely tied to one of the main characters. 12:45 - 👀💦💦💦💦 22:10 - This storyline with Pike's blood is unique to the animated series! 26:40 - 👀💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦 27:10 - Matt Mercer is actually the one singing this song!

NatMcK7

The magic 8 ball being right though...

Antonia Moore

No one is safe from death, especially with Matthew Mercer as the DM. O7

Christopher Malone

Yeah, Anna actions while horrible are completely understandable given her history with the Cerberus Assembly. As for everything else that happens this episode... I'm sorry

ELS_Art

Ahhh the episode! Do not want to give spoilers for the actual Live play campaign but as someone who got to see the session this episode references even I was blown away!

One interesting thing about Percy's death - which is a REAL death btw - is that even Vax is shocked at the ,,how" part on it. --> Because I believe that he would have seen (possibly) a sign from the Matron (i.e. a black feather nearby) anything really to signal him that even tho he wasn't present at the moment he died that ,,transition" still happened, but there was NOTHING... Which says a lot to how real and dire the situation really is

Christopher Malone

Percy death was handled very seriously in the campaign cause his player Talesin Jaffe is very much if a PC dies then that is how it was meant to be and had his next character, Mollymuck Tealeaf, ready to go if needed... I am going to stop there cause anything else would be spoilers just go look it up yourself if you are interested... I will just say I like how they chose to adapt this sequence from the game for the show and it shows the weight of death far better then traditional D&D does

King_Diirt

The amvs of this episode I have saved up

Nektis Noir

Something to remember is that Vex only came back because the Matron hadn't yet claimed her to go to the afterlife and Vax made the deal to be the champion. No one else in the show has died and come back besides her and that was very specific circumstances. Percival doesn't have that luxery. Plus Pike is a skilled cleric. When she says a character is gone, that means they're *gone*.

Bug Catcher Jacky

Elijah's reaction is exactly why I have a gripe with the show's constant faux killing of characters. It takes away so much much needed tension that this scene that's clearly supposed to be heart breaking and sad made me feel absolutely nothing. Even IF he does come back, a death should never leave me thinking "eh". They used that card far too often making deaths lose their meaning. But that's just about the only gripe I have. Bless you Elijah, btw!

Bug Catcher Jacky

That's what everyone says but then the show goes out of its way to prove that they DO have insane plot armor. The fact that I can watch any of them dying while thinking "Eh they'll be fine" is prove of that. It got a little repetive after the second time, unfortunately

Tall Geeky & Cool

The next episode is one of my favorites just because it is one of the main cast's "For your Consideration" acting reel.

Dark Siri

I have viewed this episode several times, but this is the first time I noticed the mention of "The Assembly." It does tie a lot together.

BigPoppaJohn89

Percy raised the Death Flag, never tell someone you love them while you're on a mission because that'll be the last time you'll see them

CocolomboXD

You might wana check if the sound of your files are in stereo 2.1 or surond 5.1. If they are in 5.1, that might explain the volume changes.

Christopher Malone

if you look at the xray of the episode on prime video one of the attackers are named, anyone who has watched c2 will react to this name with copious amounts of swearing

Suplee215

The positive reading of Ripley's goal is to create a weapon that allows those without magic to stand up to those with magic. Almost like the equalists in legend of korra. Her father did tell her to use her mind to change the world. The negative reading is she became so obsessed with the pursuit of science that she doesnt care if the world burns and just wants to do it. Dr. Anna Ripley is what Percy could have become if he didnt have vox machina

Aineyn

I said it a few times before and shall say it again: This is based of a D&D game; the fate of the characters were up to the roll of the die! Sure, they take liberties for storytelling reason, but the overall tale is the same! My point being: Nobody is really 100% safe, there's not much plot armor in a game! Just saying! :p

dainbramage7

The denial is strong with this one. He's gone, Elijah. It's going to hurt more the longer you resist the truth. I wish you all the best during this difficult time.

SauceyRed

Oh god here we go, poor Elijah lmao

Ryan

Ooh, LORE! I look forward to the montage of you and Mosco "playing it cool" in the YouTube edit. Your reaction to Percy's death was so perfectly understated. "Oh, he's dead. For now."

LikeCat

I think with this one in particullar (I had not watched C1 just heard that it went down somewhat differently, just with similar results)... Without acidentally spoiling stuff I'm just gonna say this: They were prepareing us for something (song recommendation here, IYKYK) - My Friends by Oh Wonder. (I am so sorry for anybody who KNOWS why I recommanded this song) 😉 --> just watched ,,Xhorhassius Park" so no future spoilers please and thank you.

LikeCat

I thought I do not have to see THAT name yet, not under these reactions at least... In time. 💜

NERD!

In the campaign there were way more, one of the things about DND eventually death is just a diamond away from being cured, the show goes out of it's way to make the death's more impactful

FanofFantasy

Elijah is definitely in denial, but she is gonna see him in the next episode lol

Thunder

It's a difficult line to walk. On the one hand, it's a consequence being an adaptation of the campaign. Characters do have to end up in roughly the same place by the end, even if there's some flexibility in how they get there. On the other hand, if you don't maintain that idea of "death has consequences", it becomes that much more difficult to maintain that sense of stakes. Not impossible, but more difficult. It's why I really like what they decided to go with here and coming up next.

SauceyRed

Technically we've only had one real death before this, all the other ones (Keyleth, Pike, Scanlan) were near-deaths. I do agree that it does still lessen the impact, but the way this scene was shot, the music and its lyrics, and Pike saying he's gone, I was fully tearing up and knew this was different. It's just executed so much dramatically than previous close deaths and Vex's death.

SauceyRed

Wait really? I mean that makes sense, but I haven't watched that episode in a while so I can't think of what part you mean

Tall Geeky & Cool

Without spoiling anything, we get to see (or hear) one of the best voice actors in the main cast show why they are one of the best. There are two speeches in the next episode that fall into "Award Winning" highlight reels but I prefer the second one discussing 'walls around hearts'

Axelius369

Alright who took the bet that she would fall into Denial or not, pay up.

LikeCat

I thought that she would not believe it happening... Not this much tho.

bloodyshadow1

the problem is there's no scrolls of revivify to bring percy back, no withers in camp that can res him for a hundred gold or so. yes, there are spells that bring people back to life but they have certain requirements and a timeline to complete

Gabi

The denial is strong in this one...

Kiki Bee

If you remember back to S01, when Percy had Orthax, whenever he k!lled someone with the gun, it glowed as Orthax took that person's soul. In this episode, Percy had Anna's gun right at the end there and we saw it glowing as he passed... just saying...

bowen

dont post any spoilers or hints please

SportySpice

After all the times the show cried wolf with character deaths, I too had the same reaction. I know the campaign is the campaign, but from a narrative standpoint — wherever this goes — I think its unfortunate that all the death fake-outs make the emotional punches not land.

Ryan Brooks

Said on the vid and I'll say it here... gotta stop looking at this show like the narrative was completely planned out and written like a normal show. This happened in the stream... not in the exact same way but it happened. Everyone who watched the stream recognized the episode title. It's the same as the stream's episode title. It's an important moment especially for Vex.

kissatoaster

Even in DnD most Revival spells are on strict limits aka "the person can only have been dead for so and so long (Revivify is 1 minute) " and "the soul must be willing to return". Critical Role made them even more difficult, iirc.

LikeCat

I am currently about 40% done with C2, but rewatching VM and I'm noticeing things... Including this, on WHO that individual is... This is fine, I am fine... I HATE him, I hate what he DID to him.

Christopher Malone

believe me when I say, I cannot wait for M9 to get to that arc, I want them to MAKE IT HURT... my poor dirt wizard

Ferret

I love Ripley's backstory in this episode because it's such a *classic* PC backstory. "I was a young tinkerer in my village, we lived happily and in peace, but then mages came and slaughtered everyone in town for the ores we mined. I watched my father die in front of me. Now I use my brilliant mind in pursuit of vengeance, and to create a world where an ordinary person can fight back against the powerful." Take out her tendency to ally with monsters to progress her own plans and Anna could easily fit into any heroic campaign.

LikeCat

This is more or less Liam's C2 character's backstory... Down to the fact of the mage(s)... ...

Fobbles

That’s gonna be an Oof from me dawg
