YEHEEYYY SOMETHING TO WATCH WHILE RECOVERING FROM A BAD MIGRAINE 🥹

Wixher

Reminder that ALL of them can take those hits, not just Oscar (which is why Ruby isn't that worried about Qrow either). That's the entire point of aura in the show, they can take big hits like that without it hurting them.

Jason S

The worst part of how chapter 11 ended when the episode first came out is there was a two week break before we got to see chapter 12.

Kriscerosaurus

:::whispers::: Feel better soon ✌️

BGTitan

Ep 11: Love that Qrow’s first instinct was to shoot when they saw Raven. “If you’re going to shoot me, shoot me. That was insulting.” I love her. She’s horrible and I love her. “You sound just like your mother.” Oooh, what’s this? Summer crumbs? Get enough of those and we might actually have a slice of bread someday. Lol I will once again give props to Mr. Miles Luna for his voice acting as Jaune. His whole speech before the fight is just masterful. So much emotion. And I’m also inclined to think that Cinder was completely genuine with her “who are you” because she definitely did not pay Jaune any attention while at Beacon. She would not have clocked him as a threat at all. Now imagine having to wait a week after that ending. Ep 12: I love watching people react to Raven being the Spring Maiden. Some people figure it out but a lot of people get blindsided. Either way it’s a very fun reveal. If you go back to episode 4 of this volume when "Vernal" uses the lightning to defuse the situation you see Raven put her hand back down as well. And when she talks to Cinder's crew back in episode 9 when "Vernal" makes it stormy, the reason Raven has her mask is so they won't see her flamy eyes just in case. Also makes her conversation with Qrow back in V4 very funny: “Well you’ve certainly got someone strong on your side. I’ve seen the damage. …I’m not talking about the Grimm. And I’m not talking about you, either.” Except he was! Ah, got to love hindsight.

Phoenix_mercury

And why the aura flicker and aura shattering is so scary, the moment it goes from an "anime fight" to oh shit this just got real

LikeCat

,,You sound just like your mother" - Oh really Raven? - Raven and her layers upon layers of emotions in (seemingly) obvious lines/ exprettions of hers. Also that exchange of snap-backs between the twins, I love it (they don't elaborate - because why would they, both of them know what they are talking about, even if WE (still) don't.)

Jason S

One of the misdirects they had with the Spring maiden is the name 'Vernal' means "of Spring".

Mare

I'm so glad you caught the "Hansel and Gretal" connection to Hazel and Gretchen. Not too many people connect those dots. See, you really do have the gift of media literacy being well versed in fairy tales and folk lore. And yes, Cinder is part Grimm (at least her arm). Yeah Raven was the Spring Maiden all this time. The hint was the eyes, Vernal never had those flames in her eyes that all maidens have. And if you go back a few episodes where Vernal pretends to be the Spring Maiden, Raven was off to the side, lifting a finger and using her powers (subtly and covertly) of course). Vernal was trained to be the decoy.

Mare

Oh yeah, forgot to mention....you have to remember that AURA is a shield so that's why Ruby isn't so concerned. Aura protects the huntsman/huntress until it runs out. So a huntress has to recharge. And a person can use up their aura quickly when using their semblance...and then they have to recharge again. But yeah Aura helps them take those extra hits like a swipe of the sword or a punch. Weiss' Aura was REALLY low so that also factors into her circumstance these past two episodes. So Aura encompasses so much in Remnant

Mare

Yeah I remember how brutal that was. New fans are so blessed to be able to binge 😂

Mare

Yeah I'm actually surprised it hasn't sunk in yet after 5 volumes (regarding aura)

L Frances

I do love that Aura is the one ability Elijah forgets everyone has. Like, every time somebody takes a heavy hit and their body glows, she's like "WHAAAT?!" Reminder there's only way to give the Spring Maiden powers over to someone else: The person holding them has to die. So Vernal was never the Spring Maiden. And, it's worth reminding, that the Spring Maiden was supposedly a student of Haven Academy before seeking out Raven's clan. Those are the clues we have already. Bring on the next episode. Yeah, I'm glad you picked up on the ethical problem of Ozpin taking over Oscar. That is definitely gonna be a big part of Vol.6. They're not just going to drop it. Speaking of Vol.6, and feel free to read after you finish Vol.5, I do have a viewing order recommendation starting out: Watch Ep.1 by itself. Then watch the Adam Character Short with Ep.2, cause they're both on the shorter side. Then watch Ep.3 on its own, cause without credits, it's the longest in the series, for a very good reason.

Mare

Here's my "Raven" allusion connection analysis: So regarding Raven, Vernal's connection to Spring is her name but Raven Branwen is also connected to spring. Raven Branwen is based on the "Goddess Branwen" who has an interesting backstory. Goddess Branwen who was married to the "Sun" god Matholwch was also known as the "Slandered Wife." Her other descriptions, "She is a Welsh Maiden goddess of springtime, inspiration, and sovereignty. " Her physical attributes are Raven-colored hair and her husband, the Sun god is described by some accounts, with having Blonde Hair and Blue Eyes. Taiyang fits the physical description of the Sun God since his name in Chinese Hanzi etymology is 太阳 which means "Elder Sun." Yang's name also means "Sun" 阳 Here's something odd when you compare this to Raven: Branwen in welsh mythology, frees abused women from servitude and gives them a fresh start (could she have done this with Vernal?). I'm wondering if Raven is the subversion or secretly has the same background since we've only received bread crumbs as far as STRQ's history goes which is next to nothing right now. Her whole tribe might even be covering up for her for all we know. But to continue with the Goddess' backstory, She was the sister of Bran the Blessed which makes me wonder if Qrow also has this allusion and is a subversion of this brother. Bran was very protective of his sister. So far, Qrow hasn't visibly shown signs of this in RWBY .That conversation between Raven and Qrow at the tavern might have been a ruse to throw Salem and her spies off. Who knows? Now back to Branwen's story, she cared deeply for her brother Bran. So it makes me wonder if all of Raven's efforts were to also keep her brother alive as well but making him think she was siding with the Enemy. It would be a classic Red Herring which is the "Fake Defector" trope. And Monty did love his tropes while also loved creating subversions of them

Hollyhock

RWBY's aura system is so clever in the way it allows for over the top bullshit anime fights but still allows for the stakes to be high

Dre

Ah man. The standing around in the same giant room really does make this final part of the volume awkward. 😅 The individual fights are fine, but as a whole things seem really disconnected. They probably should have had separate battles throughout the school in different places and then have everyone group up in the main chamber. Production and budget issues behind the scene do partly explain why there’s a lot of sitting and talking in this volume. But perhaps some creative choices could have been made to keep the tension moving. Also, Weiss, mah girl. My favorite character. Don’t leave yourself open like that when charging a summon. I know she’s rusty but really. 😭

Rachel Mae

Jaune’s mental wellbeing: 📉📉 Miles Luna’s voice acting: 📈📈 Tearing up bc he unlocks his semblance and turns out to have been the support player of the group the whole time is so valid. crwby is dirty for the way they directly paralleled the shot of Weiss getting impaled by Cinder to the moment Cinder turns Pyrrha to dust. Not to mention having Cinder use a spear that looked very similar to Pyrrha’s weapon…. That’s also what made me start shipping whiteknight though ☠️

RetroBeastto

Whenever you see a watery light texture flash over someone that’s their Aura getting damaged and at times breaking. You can see that when Leo launches that dust cluster at Oscar. Aura is the ability to Sheila one’s self from damage and heal themselves over time. However, one’s someone’s Aura is broken they’re left vulnerable and the next hit they take can be fatal. That’s what that spear went through Weiss as her Aura was completely depleted from Vernal’s attack.

SauceyRed

LET’S FUCKING GOOO!!! I’m SO hyped for this! Such a fucking awesome set of episodes!

Karel Hill

There are so many great little hints that Raven has been the Spring Maiden the whole time too!

Dre

No need to rush yourself with finishing RWBY. Enjoy the ride. Besides, you tend to watch two episodes a week anyway so it’s at a decent pace. Oh! The mods should probably tell Elijah that there is a Volume 6 character short she needs to watch before starting Volume 6 proper.

CrowOfAFeather

YESS! Been waiting for this! Vernal having loyally acted as the decoy the whole time is kinda hinted early on if you squint, but it's such a great reveal! I'm genuinely so happy to see you enjoying the show as much as you do :)

Kiesen

Already a promising reaction from the thumbnail alone lmao: - That statue for the vault sure is interesting upon rewatch. - Raven's words about Salem are also interesting upon rewatch. I used to see it as her just being a pessimistic/backstabbing bitch but it's so much more than that. Throw in that "You sound just like your mother" line and we can only really speculate. - I adore how understated but sharp the darkness of Qrow's realization about the huntsmen is. It's always been one of RWBY's strong suits. No excess fanfare or melodrama, just an unsettling line or two that pieces it all together - That block of Leo's projectile is technically Oscar's aura being engaged. Though most people can't take a direct hit like that, but Oz's semblance was kind of a weird shield so probably not a coincidence that he's extra good at that. - RWBY never failing at making the coolest weapons possible. - "You're getting a little reckless too." Feeling like the baddest bitch ever with everything going your way and then having your plans a little fucked up will kind of make you unhinged. - Technically anyone can do that with dust crystals, but most people aren't crazy enough to do it/can't handle it. Hazel only can because of his semblance, which blocks pain. - Lmao yeah that's Hansel and Gretel. Hazel's allusion is Hansel if Gretel died- goes with the theme of (most) of Salem's lieutenants. Everyone but Tyrian is basically a protagonist if their fairy tale/story got twisted. - Qrow's aura didn't break, which is why Ruby isn't freaking out. - When Ruby hops in front of Yang, she does the same pose she does at the end of the Red trailer. - Yep, Cinder replaced her arm with Grimm. Though melding the materialized essence of raw destruction with the body probably isn't a great idea in the long run. - You technically guessed Raven being the Spring Maiden episodes ago when you said we've probably already seen the Spring Maiden. She didn't get the powers from Vernal though- a Maiden has to die to transfer the powers.

LikeCat

When she said thev,,or we probably seen the Spring Maiden" I was so giddy about seeing your reaction to Episode 12 (if I weren't already)

YNB

Adam: *exists* Elijah: and I took that personally

Nektis Noir

Raven being the spring maiden is genuinely one of the best twists in the show. We were trying so hard to not get that spoiled for you. There were several people making hints about it in the comments here and on YouTube that we had to tell to be quiet about it 😭

Potato

Oscar taking the hit and flashing the little green shield thing isnt really a power btw its just their aura and thats the way it works for everyone. While aura is up and active it allows them to tank hits until they have taken too much damage and it breaks and leaves them vonurable (And no not everyone can do what hazel did thats his own semblence) + yes raven always was the maiden, vernal was a front

Ryan

Catra, Sienna, and now Vernal. Every (cat) girl Elijah obsesses over dies. Blake must be protected at all costs.

Etheriell

Just as a fun non-spoilery fact: We had to wait 3 weeks between episode 11 and 12 because they dropped episode 11 in December, right before they went on vacation for Christmas. So everyone was stuck with that cliffhanger of Weiss being impaled for multiple weeks lol

Konrad Dunbar

and so starts the Maiden Bowl!!! the glowing eyes are the sign of using maiden powers! i'm not a fan of Ruby being knocked out BEFORE Weiss takes the blow, I think it would have had more weight for her silver eyes to activate when that happened not when jaune was clashing cinder.

Adrian ruiz martinez

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE REMEMBER THAT EPISODE 14 HAS 7 MINUTES OF CREDITS AND IS 16 MINUTES WITHOUT IT.

SportySpice

The Vernal decoy / Raven Spring Maiden reveal is one of the best twists this show pulled off. I binged V5 so didn’t have any week to week speculation, so it knocked me sideways. Love being surprised like that. There are hints in retrospect. Also love that spring had the decoy… “false spring” is apropos.

seraineity

i remember that one comment who mentioned to pay attention to the maiden eyes man was i worried it spoiled elijah 😭

SauceyRed

Bro I had all those weeks in-between to figure it out and I didn't, and a ton of other people didn't either. The misdirection was insane.

Moonas

Raven is spring maiden, Vernal couldn't gave her powers bc maiden can gave her powers by dying and thinking about u in final moments.

SauceyRed

I was honestly a bit worried a while ago that you would catch onto Raven being the spring maiden due to how many times you've predicted shit. Super happy you got plot-twisted! Next episode is my favorite of the volume! Also, as someone else mentioned, chapter 14 without credits is less than 20 minutes long, though there is a post-credits scene.

Janice Marie Audio

If you go back to Volume 4, there’s a scene in one of the episodes where Salem is with Cinder and she’s struggling in pain, while Salem is telling her “Not to fight it, and to make it dread her.” It’s a subtle hint to her arm being revealed as Grim

Solus

---I remember when these episodes first came out, I was still in the military at that point and I had gotten a friend of mine into the show, the episode of Weiss getting pierced by the spear was crazy because I had to wait a week to two weeks for each episode and the reactions I saw online of Weiss possible death at the time was crazy, me and my buddy both watched it out on post because it was a slow day on the base and boy was that a crazy ending to the episode, and then we had the Vernal reveal that she was a decoy and Raven was the maiden the whole time was crazy. ---Also, I highly recommend watching Haloid (A play on Halo and Metroid) and Dead Fantasy (A play on Dead or Alive and Final Fantasy) all video games, two of Monty Oum's (RIP) very beginning/early projects, years before he started working on the RWBY show, it will show you how far he had come as a creator at the time.

Ryan

The best cliffhangers are the ones that aren't "tune in next week!" but are "sit with those feelings for six months..." Or that one show that ended a season on an absolutely terrifying cliffhanger and then got canceled...

Sweg Money

Lots of memories with 11 Specifically, had a friend who was very invested in Weiss for personal relateability reasons, I gave them a content warning abouut this episode, they told me they were fine and weren't that attached. I knew exactly when they watched the episode due to the amount of sad texts they sent me. Also that was the episode when everyone started making the joke that the new show title was "RBY"

jessie H

Ugh, I remember that, I was so upset! That cliffhanger was foul!Crwby knew what they were doing when they put it out right before the break too

Martin E Melcher

We had to wait for each episode weekly at best. You get 2, so now you know a bit of what it was like for the fans in the day lol

Bryan Forquer

Oh man, I absolutely cannot wait till next episode!! It's my favorite of this volume, it's gonna be freaking epic!! ❤️🤍🖤💛

Sam

I am soooo excited for you to get to Volume 6. It is easily my favorite volume in the series

pneuma163

I've actually been thinking about watch order for volume 6 as well and, yep, completely agree that for the sake of creating reaction videos that that's a good order for the start of the volume (and the rest of the volume continues on more or less as usual in terms of lengths) I also really like this take on Elijah's understanding of aura.

pneuma163

It seemed pretty clear to me in the video that next week will be 13 and 14 together, so we should be good there

Xylia

So to clarify now that you’ve seen the reveal. Raven was always the Spring Maiden and Vernal was the cover. That’s why whenever the Spring Maiden’s power was shown, Raven was wearing the mask. And that’s why she wears the mask - to hide her eyes glowing from the power Can’t wait for you to get to Volume 6 😊

LikeCat

Volume 6 is the peak of RWBY storytelling (the first 4-ish episodes),... And the aftermath of what happened... And it is trill to watch/ rewatch it alongside new RWBY fans.

pneuma163

Maybe I'm being over protective, but "the rest..." feels like over-leading to the point of spoiling to me, btw

Rachel Mae

Luckily she’s not reading these anymore but i just wish people would behave bc id love for her to at least have the option to read them 🥲 cue my *old man shakes fist at clouds* rant on how Patreon needs to allow for comment moderation by assigned mods

Phoenix_mercury

Makes sense to me, the last time she saw anyone go against cinder was Pyrrha aka the best in their year, no wonder she'd have a flashback to what happened last time with jaune going against her 1v1(can't say more cz spoilers but it doubly makes sense when a later conversation about the activation is added to what happened both times)

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah in hindsight it's really obvious cinder chose Weiss because she was the only one at that moment who had no aura to protect her at all thus the most vulnerable to a fatal blow

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah not watching the WOR's especially the aura one has taken a hit to her tbh

Phoenix_mercury

I think not watching tye WOR may have affected that, like I feel like watching an extra video about that sole subject really could have helped

dainbramage7

Imagine watching Episode 11 and then having to wait a week just to find out if Weiss was going to make it. It was torture at the time.

TheRavenWanderer

Yep! Considering how that whole "I'm here for you too." moment Weiss shared with Yang could've easily been interpreted as a death flag back then...

Eddie Murphy

For real, it was so rough, especially given that it was like 3 weeks because of the Christmas break! Edit: My memory is faulty, it was episode 10 that had a 2* week break after it.

Vex Valor

It's so nice to be able to just click next episode. Watching this as it aired with all those cliffhangers was painful. XD

Jittercritter

I’m glad she’s noticing a lot of small details with Raven! Raven imo is one of the most ambiguous characters, I feel like there’s a lot of ways to interpret her actions and motivations, she’s super interesting! And that Weiss fakeout though, imagine how viewers felt when we had to wait a week

Arashi

Seem to have forgotten that the Maiden power is a 'for life' deal. No passing to another unless/until the current holder dies. Vernal was a cover from the jump, thus why she had her eyes closed when 'proving' her power and Raven was behind her helmet. The only other possible time the Maiden power was used was in Yang and Weiss' aborted attack on the tribe. The lightning bolt interrupted everything and Vernal was then shown to be lowering her arm. It implied she cast it, but once again, Raven had her helmet on. ;) Juane isn't 'healing' in the way you are probably thinking of. His semblance is to recharge/amplify other's aura/semblance, and since an active aura can speed up healing/recovery.... *shrugs* Don't be deceived by episode 14's length. It's the volume finale so the end credits are massive to show absolutely everyone involved in the volume, the actual run time of the episode itself is closer to 16 minutes. (1:30 intro, ~4:30 outro, ~30 sec post credit scene and the rest are Rooster Teeth advertisements for other/upcoming shows they were doing.)

yearn xiao longing

absolutely loved how you parsed raven's moral ambiguity but didnt see it coming LOLLLL banger episodes man. hope you do 13+14 together cause that next ep.... wheeeew!

Vince

I was *screaming*, holy shit. Like I knew they wouldn’t kill *Weiss*, but man, they make you feel like they could’ve. The next week I did fully burst into tears when Jaune’s semblance activated tho, ngl.

Vince

And Vernal was dying in that moment, it’s not unreasonable to think she passed the power to Raven to protect her and keep it from Cinder.

BGTitan

I thought so, but then I second guessed my memory.

bloodyshadow1

just want to point out what a monster hazel is. Qrow was able to fight tryian, salem's other enforcer in a pretty even fight. yet hazel is tossing him around like he's the kids in that fight.

BGTitan

Raven didn't have her helmet on when "Vernal" summoned that lightning strike but you do see her also lower her hand in the background. It's only when there's a big show of Power that the Maiden eyes usually come into play. So like you said when "Vernal" made the weather get all stormy during their meeting with Cinder's crew. That would have been a flamey eye moment, thus why Raven wore her helmet.

LikeCat

Now that you saw Cinder's Grimm arm reveal, I can finally say this: When I saw Orthax be (?) Ripley's arm in Season 3 Episode 7 of TLoVM all I could think of was, ,,Where have I seen this before?" - The answer: Cinder with her (now iconic) Grimm arm.

Mare

At least now, she knows why Raven kept wearing her helmet (To hide the flames in her eyes since that's a major sign of being a maiden).

Henkotron

Raven being the spring maiden is one of those Plottwists that you don't really see coming (at least imo) and they executed it so well. It is rare to find a Plottwists that in itself is creative and cool, but also very difficult to see coming.

Henkotron

Yeah the Raven Spring Maiden twist is the rare case of being difficult to forsee AND being a genuinely good twist!

dainbramage7

I actually had to look it up as I was also convinced it was the holiday break we had to wait but nope, just one week. Felt like 3 though.

Rachel Mae

fr it's legit storytelling sleight of hand bc the signs that Raven was the real maiden were there as far back as v4 before we even meet Vernal but they distract us with Vernal well enough that viewers still don't always see it coming

Mare

Came back here to share RWBY news but someone beat me to it. Yes it’s true that RWBY Volume 10 has been confirmed and in deep in pre-production. So July 5th an important date as they have major RWBY announcements and events that occur that day: - Announced on July 5 which is ALSO the anniversary of the RWBY debut at RTX, - as well as the same date that Viz announced that they now own RWBY. - And today (July 5) is the day that it started streaming in Hulu/Disney + https://youtu.be/-gP6VEdfI0I?si=neI7Sp_tE2l7nAfu

Eric Smith

One of my favorite executions of a twist. Just enough people had started to theorize it ahead of time that the clues were pre-collated but it hadn't become considered obvious by the FNDM as a whole

Eric Smith

I'm always reminded of the ColeyDoesThings RWBY video. "Adam is... cancer?"

Hollyhock

I love that you caught the joke of Raven calling Qrow her 'little' brother despite being twins. Raven is so hilariously petty at times. grown ass 40 year old woman bullying her twin about being like 6 minutes younger. Very realistic twin behavior, speaking from (secondhand) experience XD

Cinder's Apologist

I was not around for when v5 dropped but as others have no doubt said, yes, that cliffhanger with Weiss must have been torture back then. (ofc plot armor saves her :P) wanted to say something about Hazel's deal but that's gonna be covered next episode... but for now, he is absolutely a monster fighter. and fun fact: the voice for Hazel is the guy that did the Grimm vocalizations! I was so, so excited to see her reaction to the Spring Maiden reveal, and I was not disappointed! more will be explained so can't say much but there are definitely little clues that it was Raven all along. visual things that seem so insignificant but with hindsight, you know... for example: in v4 right before Raven dips out after her chat with Qrow, a candle on a nearby table goes out after Qrow says "without [the Spring Maiden], we're all going to die" which seems so random BUT makes sense when you realize it's the tiniest indicator that IT IS RAVEN. hoping she's gonna watch the last two episodes together even though the finale is one of the longer ones in this show. so much action and so much plot stuff!

LikeCat

Three of my all time favorite twins in fiction are all from shows Elijah watched/ watching: ToH (Edric and Emira), RWBY (Raven and Qrow) and TLoVM (Vax and Vex)

Diesel Marcus

HERE IT IS!!!!! LET'S FUCKING GO!!!!

acenerdsbian

I wonder if she noticed that Cinder didn't just summon A spear to throw at Weiss. She summoned PYRRHA'S spear. Or at least that's what it always looked like to me.

Aaron williams

Trust me your SECOND watch of RWBY from the beginning is going to be even better because then you’ll catch the foreshadowing and the hints to all the plot point and twist. Like every time vernal was using her powers raven wore her mask to cover up that it was actually her for example. Or Salem being the big bad and her narrations at the beginning of the series basically being her taunting us with the fact that she’s winning. There’s so much. Can’t wait for next volume because THAT is coming up. You’re going to be shook.

Aaron williams

I still remember that week I was PISSED crying and throwing up.

NamelessSoul

The Raven reveal is one of the coolest moments thus far. I am so happy youre enjoying RWBY so much, its such a special show to me.

Silverbell_TTV

I remember in the director, cast and crew commentaries they would talk about how, since this all started out as a youtube series, with the episodes being so short, when you watch the volumes in movie form, they have way more dramatic twists and turns than a normal feature length film, since every week there had to be some hook, or interesting development.

Kev Rink

Only note. Yang should've said something to Mercury like "This time I'll break both of your legs!"
