👁️ Padparatcha elf future vision: Elijah will get really mad at Viren

Christopher Malone

yeah, the pw for the last three eps of this season should just be Trigger warning , Trigger Warning DefCon 2 and Trigger Warning Oh God WHY for ep9... especially for episode 9

Vengerin

Yeah, this episode is hard to watch. I'm a mother, I know the fears and I understand them but I don't share the lenghts and less the blame. And if you see this episode and then return to watch the scenes of Claudia talking about her mother going and how she felt? It his harder.

.

The fact he burned the letter too...what a coward.

Nektis Noir

It's understandable that that scene of Viren and his wife was so uncomfortable. As someone who's been in abusive familial and romantic relationships myself, I wasn't too broken up about due to the context but it was still very uncomfortable nonetheless. I wouldn't say Viren isn't taking accountability. The fact he's admitting all this and willingly taking imprisonment *is* accountability. But it will never make up for what he's done. I'm glad the writers chose for him to not give Soren the letter. I feel it would not only hurt Soren more but also Viren doesn't deserve the chance to explain himself. He's wasted his chances and being revived doesn't mean he can just get those back. I can also get not being happy about the Rayllum rift that's been occurring since Book 4. I personally like it cause besides the natural falling for each other in Books 1-3, there was admittedly never really any "spice" or uniqueness to them becoming a thing besides "They believe in each others strengths when they themselves don't". So I think them having their gripes with each other (Callum with Rayla leaving for years and Rayla with Callum resorting to dark magic more than once) and getting over that in a slow-burn romantic recovery arc makes their dynamic all the more complex and stronger. It's not for everyone but I feel it works better than the idea of them just getting together in Book 3 and then just being a cute couple for 2/3 of the story, especially since they're the main romance. If it helps, just know that besides one more big moment this book, Viren isn't really relevant anymore and Aaravos takes center stage more so that should hopefully be more digestible for your reactions lol

Nektis Noir

I'd argue him giving the lettee would be more cowardly and despicable. He's hurt Soren enough and doesn't deserve to explain himself, especially in an "I became this to save you" fashion.

Flufux

If it's any consolation...next episode is way less dark and more fun. I won't say anything else because of spoilers, but it really isn't nearly as uncomfortable as the one you just watched.

L Frances

I'll say up front, if you're disliking the writing this much at this point, it may be time to leave this show behind after this season. Cause as much as I like watching your reactions, I don't want you to have to sit through something you don't like. Like, I'd almost not mind spoiling it at this point, cause I can sense there are only going to be more things that annoy you about it. I will say, for my part, I do appreciate this show, and I appreciate Viren's arc, even though I hate his character and that never changes. But I know that I appreciate it for personal reasons. I feel validated seeing that those who enact life destroying abuse on their kids are simply too ruined to be redeemed, even when they try to do good. Both my grandfather, and to a lesser extent my father, were deeply narcissistic, self-serving men who've hurt their families in irreparable ways, and even when they tried to make amends, they still left more scars & wounds than they ever healed. I like Viren's arc because it doesn't feel like they're trying to make us like him, and that makes it easier for me to look at those abusers in my own life and firmly turn my back on them. But I also understand not seeing that and only feeling angry at being subjected to this character. And I'll say that while Viren's arc is nearing its end, I do suspect you'll only find more things to make you upset in the writing of this show.

Deynix

Yeah, this was where I walked away from the series.

L Frances

I actually think burning the letter is the only selfless thing he's ever done. Directly from Cosmo's words, him giving the letter to Soren would only shift a burden onto him & throw him into despair over his life. Not doing that doesn't make him remotely good. It just means he's trying to stop doing harm just to clear his own conscience. It's 100% too little too late, but it's not the wrong choice in that moment.

Eliteguard99

For me watching TDP post season 3 with Elijah is like watching a train wreck with Elijah’s wonderful commentary but if she doesn’t like the show and wants to stop that’s completely understandable. I didn’t like watching post season 4 until Elijah’s GLORIOUS commentary made those seasons bearable.

Nektis Noir

This. Cause most people consider Book 6 to be one of the show's peaks after Book 3. So if Elijah isn't enjoying it, she probably won't enjoy Book 7 either (which imo is a noticeable downgrade from 6).

L Frances

Yeah, I also think as those who enjoy reactions, we enjoy watching *good* angst, when there's clear emotional tension & turmoil cause the reactor is invested in the story and characters. We don't want anyone to just be suffering through something they're very actively not enjoying whose investment is waning. It was visible in the tailend of Elijah's Harley Quinn S4 reactions, and it's honestly more visible now. If she decides to bail, I will not blame her.

Miranda Corvus

Oh Viren absolutely sucks big time, but he's not burning the letter to not 'face the music'. As Cosmos says: Sometimes you need to think about whether what you say will give clarity or transfer the burden elsewhere. Hes messed Soren up enough. He'd probably just blame himself. He's in no way at fault but kids, no matter how old internalizes that kind of stuff

Ryan

If you didn't know what happened in the episode, the juxtaposition of the thumbnail and the password would be bizarre. Viren's letter does not tell us anything about his character that we didn't already know. To him, the ends always justify the means. I think it is there to provide a foil to Callum and Rayla's adventure at the Star Scraper. Both arcs deal with the concept of truth and pain. The difference is that Kosmo *could* see how Callum handled the truth. Viren assumed. He couldn't know how Soren would have handled the truth, or how Claudia would have handled it if/when she learned. Had Viren given Soren the letter, it would have been interesting to see him process knowing that his life had been saved - twice - by dark magic. It would have been interesting to see Claudia learn why her mother left. That might have given her closure. Or it might have re-opened old wounds. It's as Callum said - "how your life would be different if you just changed one thing". We'll never know - although I bet there are fanfics that explore the idea. ---- You don't need to apologize - you did nothing wrong. This episode broaches some heavy subjects and the only mercy is that it was presented in narration and line drawings, not fully animated. Viren is a genuinely horrible person. Blaming your son for the consequences of a choice *you* made to save *his* life is a shitty thing to do. ---- Callum and Rayla's story gets overshadowed by Viren's letter, but it is nice that the two of them have finally gotten over themselves. Now if the writers will just remember that Rayla has an arc outside of being the hero's love interest, that would be great. IIRC, the next episode features exactly zero Viren, so there is that.

Miranda Corvus

Sent first time to soon- Okay so thing is I like Viren as a character...Not so much as a person. But when it comes down to it, the only choice he's ever made I can defend was the Magma Titan arc Every other choice he's made has in one way or another served himself. And when his 'ends justify the means' way of life in any way backfires, he turns it on others. HE hurt his wife, yes it was to save his son, but he hurt her regardless and she's not obligated to be okay with that. And he shifted the blame of his own choices onto his son. Aaaaaand as interesting as his realization quest is, considering people were forced to sit through 3 seasons of him detesting and gaslighting his son...Well yeah, his moment of clarity is just too late. Considering how many people have a Viren in their life, hes probably the worst idea for a 'flawed' character.

.

Unfortunately, I see it more as Viren hiding the truth of horrible things he did to the mother of his children, and what eventually drove her to leave. I understand your point but I'd argue giving the letter to Soren and have a scene of HIM burning the letter would've been more powerful. Viren choosing to withhold that information, choosing to burn that letter is robbing Soren from the truth. Give him the choice of reading it or not. Either way, it would've brought closure to Soren to have that power over the letter. That's just my perspective.

seraineity

dont worry elijah, im with you on all your complaints on the poor writing choices 🫂 ngl i miss when it was just s1-3 and i was like "wow the writing of this show is soo good i want more" then waited years and came s4 and disappointment 😅

seraineity

i wish i could defend u from the ppl who get mad at u just for having an opinion, and for a cartoon the way u feel abt character whose name will not be mentioned is honestly the same as i do so pls know ur not alone in this

Serinthia Kelberry

Watching this along with you for the first time, i confess I felt the same way. Viren assaulted his wife. Maybe there wasn't a sexual component to it, but it was still an assault. He violated her personal space and her body. It would not surprise me that she would feel horribly violated after something like that. I agree with your assessment completely. Now, people can regret the things they do in life. They can be sorry for them. They can beg for forgiveness. But, it still happened. I've seen people forgive before, but it's not a requirement. There are people in my past who have hurt me in different ways that I would not forgive if they ever tried. There are others I might. It would depend. But for Viren. It was still assault. I believe he regrets what he did. I do not believe he should be forgiven for it. And I don't plan to. I am at least thankful he burned the letter. Soren didn't need a burden like that.

Potato

im gonna be real i completely forgot about the letter aside from him burning it this series ending was such a train wreck

SauceyRed

I honestly appreciate the different view that Elijah has given on Viren. When I first watched it, I never thought about any of what Elijah has had gripes with, but now I can see them. Don't get me wrong, I still like Viren as a character, but I see how the way they handled him could've been way better. Personally, how they handled him is enough for me, but I can see how it isn't for everyone. Everyone has their own opinions and experiences (I mean, I've seen several people on the TDP subreddit feeling bad for Viren, being emotional over some scenes of him, saying he's their favorite character, saying he's redeemed in their eyes, etc.), and that's okay (and you *shouldn't* have to repeat yourself about it being your opinion). As some others have mentioned, there isn't gonna be *as* much focus on Viren going forward, so hopefully you'll enjoy the show more. As a side note: I'd honestly like to see Elijah and one of the writers having like a podcast-like video where they talk about Viren. Just like, I don't know how it would go or how productive it would be, but I feel like it'd be very interesting at least.

LikeCat

You know what I wanna see? Her and James (Reel James - basically THE TDP review guy) having a discussion about the show (mainly about the Viren parts), mainly because I wanna see them share and talk about the show and their respectful views on stuff.

SauceyRed

Oh I’ve never heard of him, what’s his opinion on Viren?

LikeCat

While I agree that the writing post Season 3 is significantly worse than it was for Season 1-3... Partly (for S4 at least) it was our ,,fault", we (for obviously reasons - it has been amazing so far, why would it be bad from now) hyped it up way out of proportion (to be fair to us we had to wait like, what 3 YEARS for anything regarding Season 4 and onward). To clerify this does NOT justify the bad writeing AT ALL.

LikeCat

While he does not like his character (the kind of people he represents), he can kinda get behind his action... To a degree of course. Highly, HIGHLY recommend watching his reactions to the show. He gets access to the season a week or so earlier than it is out (Aron Ehas is a channel friend and such), so he does a spoiler free ,,discussion" about said season on Youtube than when the Season is out he slowly releases his (already recorded and edited) reaction. When I watch the show the first thing I do when I finish is to watch his reaction to stuff... Of course he has his gripes with the writeing at times, but he can set that aside to just enjoy the show as is... And do amazing theory/ analizis videos

Phoenix_mercury

Just from what I've seen/read, this ep will be a no go for me especially as I've seen many others(especially with the wording of the letter ect) confirm it does read parallel to SA in everything but the specific action and how it absolutely seems to be an allegory for such(makes sense they, likely, wouldn't be able to do such a thing, thankfully, in TDP)

Phoenix_mercury

The part about blaming his son for his(the fking adults) choices just reminds me of this parents that are all well I brought you into this world so you owe me🤦🤬

Jasmine King

I feel like everything Viren has done is true to Viren's character. Him blaming other people for his own crummy actions and doing the most vile things for 'the greater good' are his standard operating process. We saw it with Harrow, Sarai, Soren, and now the mother of his children. He is not a good person, and he never has been. He certainly dabbled in dark magic before putting his mentor in the coin. By this time his mentor had put dark magic away, but he'd certainly used it before. Possibly, it was his mentor who taught Viren about dark magic. Before Callum, no human (that we know of) had done magic naturally.

Bug Catcher Jacky

You don't have to skip the entire episode. The Rayllum parts are actually quite wholesome. Just fast forward whenever Viren shows up or the scene shifts away. There's only two povs in this episode

Bug Catcher Jacky

You know, Elijah, in moments like these I don't think any patron would mind if you paused and took a break to try and distract yourself for a little bit. We'rr all mostly here for you, after all. Regarding Viren... I think the general idea of his character is not so bad. A lot of his overall traits and such are quite compelling but the writing (or execution) totally wreck all of that. Viren is, ironically, a good example for what's wrong with this show. Viren, just like the show, claims to be a certain way but then goes out of his way to prove he's not. He claims to love Soren, but we've never seen any glimbses of regret or hesitation (a good example of this done right is in How to train your Dragon. In one scene after Stoic tells Hiccup he's 'not one of them', he leaves and then staggers—putting emphasis on hiw his own words impacted Stoic himself). Viren claims he does things for the sake of his people, but we never truly see him care. This is a theme in the show. Like how the show tries to pretend that the conflict between the countries is both people's faults; but then keeps portraying the humans as the sole evil. I hope I'm making sense. It's a bit tricky to write cuz the app is being super laggy

Bug Catcher Jacky

Also the fact that Viren is so, so sorry but doesn't make ANY attempts to do right by his fricken (ex) wife. After what he did, the least he could do is try but he's clearly not sorry for that. He only feels sorry for the things involving Soren directly, and I imagine even that he doesn't truly feel sorry for. Else he'd drop this constant 'me, me, me' and 'you bad, he bad, everyone bad but me'

Bug Catcher Jacky

If it doesn't feature Viren, then it probably features Viren 2.0 aka Karim. Who, honestly, isn't much of an improvement lol

Ryan

I think calling Karim "Viren 2.0" is an insult to Viren since, as Elijah has pointed out in previous reactions, Viren at least put in the work. So far Karim has had others do the work for him. Which is worth it's own discussion when you consider how the three princes in the show - Ezren, Karim, and Kasef - have acted so far.

Eliteguard99

FR one of the worst aspects is that the characters will say one thing then act in a way that's 100% opposite, and it feels like the characters don't possess any agency and their actions are entirely determined by the writers and plot. It's really frustrating to watch.

Chris P3

If a human mage wanted to use natural magic, they needed a primal source, like the stone Callum used in the first season until he gave it up so Zym could hatch, or the heart of the Magma Titan used to end the famine across Duren and Katolis. But even those would often require dark magic or other inhumane methods to obtain.

Luís Pacheco

Totally agree. I'm watching the show for the first time, and I'm currently keeping up with it in the same pace as Elijah; and it's interesting to see how she has a completetly different view from my own (especially on Viren's ark). Every time I watch an episode I think "hm, I wonder what Elijah will think of that". If anything, I think that makes her a great reactor: one that, even when I disagree, I kind of look forward to seeing what she'll think.

Alyssa Hernandez

I've been so confused by people who defend Viren or gave her such a hard time about him. I never saw his as someone who was getting or deserved a redemption arc. He is a shit person, a horrible father, and a monster who thought he was some "savior" who saw everything he did as the "greater good". Even after seeing his daughter follow his footsteps he still chose to be selfish. I hope the writers weren't trying to make him someone we would sympathize for, if so it was waaaaaay off the mark.

ARogueMaiasaura

Gosh, I knew this was gonna be a hard one to get through as it was for me too but I do want to clarify some things just from my own personal point of view. I absolutely hate Viren as a character as well, I hate him there just isn't anything else to it and the Viren defenders confuse me a ton but I do think Viren is very "human" to me only because I've had family members that think and behave exactly like that and in that sense I believe he's written well, in my eyes this was never a redemption arc but only something that would thoroughly explain how warped his mind is. This particular episode for me is what just furthered his villain arc and I do agree they should have added a trigger warning beforehand, I'm actually shocked a kids Netflix profile can access the show.

Rye-Ah

Commenting this before starting the video because I'm already expecting very harsh words (in the reaction or comments) about people "defending Viren". I just want to gently raise the point that S6 hadn't been released yet when S1 and 2 were being reacted to. I'm not going to go analysing every comment under every video, but I wouldn't be surprised if the number of full-on defenders dropped significantly after fans saw this episode...or at the very least they took a different approach when talking about Viren

Rye-Ah

Update (post-reaction): I don't feel like talking about Viren. Nothing I say will contribute more to the conversation than my previous comment What I DO feel like talking about is Rayla and Callum because they were BEYOND endearing this episode. I never really saw them as being angsty with each other this season? Aside from E3 being a brief clash about sacrificing themselves for each other - they've been a solid team! They're both affectionate and sharing personal details, and need very little convincing to trust each other (e.g., Rayla about Callum's dream, Callum about Rayla and Esmeray). As far as I'm aware the only angst in their storyline is caused by outside variables

Jasen Phillips

Understandable response and I have a family member experience such a thing and I do believe viren how do you turning over the new leaf is too late and such crimes in my eyes are unforgivable and it's clearly attempt to clear his own connections apologies for any spelling mistakes writing is not my strong point

Joey Quixote

Valid. You are valid. Your feelings are valid. If something like this should pop up in a future reaction to anything, please take a moment for yourself. Get some air. Get some water. Hug your mom. Pet the doggos. Show us the progress you're making on a game you're playing. Gush about your girlfriend. You're a reactor. We're here fir a reaction. We appreciate your honesty and in-the-moment feelings. And yeah, sometimes we pick things for you to watch that are gonna hurt. But if you are ever distressed by a reaction the way you were here, take a breather. Self-care is important.

Christopher Malone

so first off Elijah... thank you for articulating something I had felt when I first watched this episode. I am not a Viren fan but I do find him to be an interesting character but he is still a POS and there was something about this episode that made me uncomfortable but I could not name why. I can now so thank you for that, and good news is that we are just about at the end of Viren story and while I completely understand being done with him, I would like to know your thoughts on how he chose to end his story. And there is the other piece of good news, we are a step closer to Aaravos story which honestly, I think will be a sad palate cleanser after this

Iron117Prime

I am going to tell you right now... WATCH THE CREDITS IN THE NEXT EPISODE! STICK TILL THE END!

graave

i personally think that viren is a character we're not supposed to like? the writing for his "wanting to be redeemed" is def frustrating and coulda been done better, but i never saw his backstory as we need to feel bad for him but just as a "ahhhh he's BEEN a selfish a-hole" LOL i think so much of his character was wasted on him being in a weird coma for a whole season XC

Suplee215

I think the writers try to be too subtle on this show. And it works a lot better during a binge than once a week but it still doesn't work. The sickness for Soren is clearly something from the early seasons but the sudden reveal here makes it feel so jarring. Claudia hinted at soren being sick as a child when he was wounded by a dragon ajd I think that episode should have gone into fuller details ajd explained that Viren healed him then.

Suplee215

I do think hes more complicated a character than you seem to, and thats valid of you. Part of the bar writing is they keep his story so tight to the vest that by the time we get a little bit of things the audience is already biased against him. I do not like him. I do see him as a tragic figure who went to the dark side due to a love for his family that was handled the wrong way. It could be used to explore how the most positive of emotions can be used for evil if its nurtured wrongly. Watching these reactions i realize I gsve this show a lot of benefit of the doubt and put in things that weren't written.

Elaina

When you asked if the way viren was treating his wife was like SA, I think it is 100%. I was SA'ed a couple years ago and that perfectly describes how it feels. Helpless, betrayed, scared, devastated. Idk if that was how his wife was feeling, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

Elaina

Agreed! I was like "how tf did they get away with this?!" I mean it's literally rated TV-Y7! I really think it should be rated TV-PG for all of the blood they show and very sensitive topics like ptsd, r*pe (or at least the depiction of it), and even mental abuse.

ARogueMaiasaura

Wild, huh 😭 I don't get it, maybe cause it's Netflix they can kinda get away with it easier
