This is a pre written message, aiming to correct any misconceptions that will inevitably float around as well as talk about some drastic changes. There will be one for each saga. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that EPIC is first and foremost an adaptation of The Odyssey; Jorge Rivera-Herrans took MANY creative liberties with the story and songs, focusing on themes that is more or less a modernized idea of what Odysseus went through. All the while ignoring that the Homeric poem was primarily influenced by the cultural norms of his time. First off, the Olympians never interacted with mortals without a disguise in The Odyssey, save for Hermes who, as the closest thing to an actual trickster god for the Greeks, tended to do his own thing. Second, the idea of “greeting the world with open arms” would be ABSOLUTELY ALIEN to any Greek of the time; they were a warrior driven society, and the idea of being peaceful was completely foreign. The main focus of The Odyssey were the rites of hospitality: the duty of the host and the guests. What to do and not to do. A great YouTuber to help understand the changes is MadNBooks, who offers immense insight into the historical and mythological context of every conceivable source that can be found on Greek myths and tales.

LET'S GOOOO! I'm not feeling the best right now so I'll wait to watch this, but damn I'm hyped! Also seems it's a different playlist than Morgan's, so that should be fun! EDIT: Nvm about that last part lmao

Jordan Lynn Goodman

Elijah!! The voice of Oddy is the creator/composer, Jorge :) A lot of his family and friends voice various characters in the musical!

Sly

Oh man! Okay, im so keen for you to listen and watch Epic the musical. Its my favourite and ive been waiting for this reaction!!!

JJ415

Aw there's an even better animatic for open arms and warriors of the mind :/

Ben Disney

YES! I cannot WAIT to see you react to the rest of this! This is currently my favourite musical, and I'm SO glad this reaction came out before I had to go to work today!

Aiden N.

Polites I relate to the most so Open Arms is first and then Warrior of the mind as my favs

Stormyweather

Glad to see you welcoming this musical with open arms!!! My favorite song from the troy saga is most definitely open arms!! I love the little lotus eaters.

Gihellcy

ONE OF US, ONE OF US \o/ Personnaly, my fav song of the Troy Saga is Warriors Of The Mind, I mean, Athena's voice is STELLAR ~ Also, yeah, at the moment of The Horse & The Infant, Odysseus have left Ithaca for TEN YEARS, bro just want to see his wife and son again ~

lance freeman

Second part of The horse and the infant. The song just stuck itself in my head big time. Especially the the background vocals repeating what he said.

Potato

Its crazy to think that the entirety of that musical masterpiece is made by a single person (song writting wise, there are obviously other people who sing) Also good thing to note is that epic the musical is heavily inspired and a musical retelling of the story but not a word to word recreation so there are some changes

Annieme

Omg it’s here! “Warrior of the mind” is one of my faves, but “open arms” gets stuck in my head sooooo often lol

Dragon0921

So excited for you to tackle this musical! I know a lot of people are eager for the Neal Illustrator animatics, but I hope you have some from AnniFlamma as well! They do a lot of cool visuals for their animatics! Also they did a couple of Critical Role animatics in the past based on their 2nd campaign and they drew Odyssues VERY similar to how they drew Caleb Widogast, Liam O'Brian's character and I can't unsee it. 😆

seraineity

omg i love ur singing elijah i remember u also do music but i love hearing u sing to the songs of epic too

BGTitan

Alright so let's break down this crazy journey so far. Horse and the Infant: Honestly this is a pretty great intro into the musical. A nice set up leading into Just a Man (the first vid you watched had two songs that's why it was so long). And yeah my favorite part is everything from the little nursery chimes on. The second you hear those it's just like "well...crap." But also, Luke as Zeus is crazy good. Just a Man: Jorge absolutely kills it with this. I love his falsetto. To answer your question about how long he's been away, he said at the beginning of the last song that they'd been at war for ten years. Full Speed Ahead: Poor automated subtitles. Eurylochus and Polites' names got butchered. But to the part of music, I love the call and response set up for this song. Now we've got our main goal, make it back home. Open Arms: This is actually my least favorite of the Troy Saga, and a song I don't listen to often. Not that it's bad it just isn't my jam. I do appreciate Disney Princess Polites though. He's a sweetie. Warrior of the Mind: TEAGEN!!!! MY QUEEN!!! Best song of the Troy Saga in my opinion led by the ever fabulous Teagen Earley!!! Her voice! I can't! But her and Jorge's harmonies are also so good. Love how the first time they sing Warrior of the Mind together Ody does a little riff but Athena sings a straight note. The second time however, Athena sings the riff with him. So freakin good! Anyway, I can't wait for more! You are in for a ride!

jessie H

I love how Polities instantly becomes everyone’s favorite. Fun fact, each character has their own instrument that is associated with them. Odysseus is the Guitar; depending on what his intentions are, it will change. Eurylocus is the voice of the crew, so whenever he sings, the crew will often sing with him. Athena is represented by the piano. Gods also make their own backup chorus. Our boy Politese is the karimba and something else, he’s more positive so his instruments reflect that. Penelope’s instrument is the viola (please correct me if I got that wrong)

A.B.

Hey Elijah, I'm sure someone else has pointed this out to you already but just in case. There are actually 5 songs in this saga. The song you thought was Horse and the Infant was actually a compilation of Horse and the Infant and Just a Man. They were just included in the same video because both animatics were made by the same artist Gigi (who has made both canon and fan-made animatics) for the musical. The song Horse and the Infant ends when Zeus says "...all you can choose is who's."

og.monstr

Retellings of the Homerian epics tell us everything about the promoted fanboys rather than the epics and their contexts in and of themselves. Me, I'm kind of sick and tired of these sorts of projects siding with the Greek heroes all the time. You can still enjoy the musical, obv. But I don't see how this isn't treading old ground yet again.

tapdisneyintome

Have you seen it? If so, you might get more than just siding with the heroes you are expecting.

tapdisneyintome

Ah Epic - I love the musical approach. It has been mentioned but it must be truly stressed that Epic takes inspiration from the Odyssey and has a lot of creative liberites to make it more palitable for a modern audience without fully departing from some of the harsh realities (like killing a baby because ignoring the gods warning would be lunacy) My favourite from this is Just A Man - starts soft and ends tragic

Red Demonica

Not to step on toes, but is there anyway you can contact Morgan and get their notes on Epic their mod put together? I’m sure whoever put this list together did their best and it shows, but Morgans mod gave them really good notes about the sagas that i think would be super beneficial to you! Just want to help you with context! So glad you’re doing this!

Vengerin

Great! You started with Epic. While isn't a 1:1 adaptation of the Odyssey (and I think doesn't need to be), it's very interesting, with very good music and voices. My favorite song from this part is without a doubt 'Warrior of the Mind'. Aside from that, even when other people already pointed to it, the creator of Epic and songwriter is also the voice of Odysseus. He sings fantastic, the same as Teagan Earley, Athena's voice. I'm so glad that you and Morgan started to react to Epic, with them has been very fun to watch, bet you will be also a delight ^^

Adrian

I had such a heart attack when you mentioned only four songs, thinking the playlist somehow lost Just A Man. Thank fucking god its that you got the one where Horse & The Infant and Just a Man were compiled in one video. As for how long he's been away: The Trojan War lasted ten years. I love the Open Arms animatic because despite how positive Polites is, this one reminds us that he was still a soldier with the death of many on his conscious, but he still chooses kindness

Andrew Pineda

[Mod] I gave the notes and this playlist directly to Elijah, seems like she might have forgotten to pull it up. I’ve reminded her

Red Demonica

Awesome! The videos you chose were amazing choices. Hopefully she reads the notes next time lol Good job!

Saiyasha

The Trojan war lastet ten years, so, yeah. Telemacheus would be about 11 by now.

Lil Ferret

The way I jumped when I saw that this was gonna be your next reaction. I love this musical so much. My personal favorite in this saga is Warrior of the Mind, Teagan's (the Voice of Athena) voice is sooo good! But Just a Man is close second just for how important it is to the story. (and the chorus omg) Also the first video you watched is actually Horse and The Infant + Just a Man, so it's two songs. That's why Open Arms was labeled as n4. The little creatures on the island are Jorge's (The creator, songwriter, composer of the musical and vocalist for Odysseus) representation of the original Lotus eaters in the Odyssey. He calls them 'winions' (pronounced Win-ñ-ons) They're kind of like the mascot for the musical lol

Saiyasha

The first Video actually had two songs in it, The Horse and the Infant and Just a Man

og.monstr

No, I haven't seen it. I do, however, get the impression that the protagonist is morally problematic and yet supposed to elicit sympathy from the audience. That's fine. I'm just going to express my point more bluntly: I don't care for Greek heroes. Especially not the ones featured in the Trojan War. I want Helen, Medusa, Medea, Circe, the Minotaur, the Trojans. They're far more interesting and more sympathetic. That, and I'm not interested in efforts to rehabilitate figures who don't fit modern notions of heroism.

Derek

You asked who voiced Odysseus at one point, it was the writer and composer for the musical, the brain behind it all, mr Jorge Rivera-Herrans. true triple threat dude, unofficial Carl Wheezer impersonator

Alexis Cardillo

Alright here we go! Now knowing that you're inter greek mythology this is right up your alley. To answer one question without spoiling they're been away for 10 years at this point and only now finally able to head home with he Horse ending the war. Favorite of Troy saga, a tie between "Just a Man" and Warrior of the Mind" Just a Man cause of what it sets up and still sounding awesome and Warrior of the Mind cause not only does it slaps but I disocovered Epic through a fav artist doing a cover of it.

Raine

I constantly fight between "Just a man" (an actual 2nd song but I can see that was already explained in the comments) and "Warrior of the mind" being my favorites from this saga. I'm so glad you're already enjoying Epic!!🩷

Henry

I’ve been wanting to see you react to this since it came out! Yaaay!

Andrew Pineda

[Mod] Fun fact, I am mutuals with Anniflamma, she and I were both posting Critical Role animatics at the same time, we were supposed to collab but that didn't end up happening, and then Epic happened. Super freaking proud of her.

Dragon0921

That's awesome! When Critical Role released their Winter's Crest Holiday Album, I was hoping Anniflamma would animate the "O Mighy Nein" song as a throwback to her old animatics. Especially since it's Caleb singing the song. 😆

Tone87

Welcome to the fandom, Elijah. You'll love it here. I am thrilled to watch you explore the show.

Verdant Crown

My favorite part from the first saga is "When does a man become a monster?" and the lyrics that leads up to it. The dual meaning of the question is just👌 Another favorite is when Odysseus meets Athena. He was such a smug little brat back then (which still hasn't changed tbh).

Miranda Corvus

Yeah it pretty much is the entire story, in song form Though Jorge has said he doesn't recommend it being used for a history test

Eric Cartman

PLEASEEEE PLEASEEEE WATCH ALIEN STAGE ON YOUTUBE

Andrew Pineda

[Mod] @Eric Cartman, this is not the place for show requests

DmC2025$

I- and I CANNOT stress this enough- am so HYPED for you to begin Epic. Just know I am singing along with every video 😁👍

Meganclare7

I love that you are reacting to this and all but I need to know where did you get the cat shirt I neeed it

Bug Catcher Jacky

Hey Elijah, if you really into Greek mythology I heavily recommend picking up a game called "Immortals Fenyx Rising" if you haven't already. Its gameplay is pretty standard but the story is super funny. It's narrated by Zeus and Prometheus and it's very comedic and overall a more joyful game for most parts. It teaches some of greek's mythology in a really funny and interactive way. Highly recommend, I had a blast playing through it

Fred Smith

Yeah, it's REALLY not in line with the original Odyssey. BUT, the beauty about a story like the Odyssey is that you SHOULD be reinterpreting it with time. It's a reflection on the culture, archetypes, and attitudes of its time. The themes and message should evolve with you, the same way Odysseus evolves over his journey. For example, losing most of Circe's wikipedia page is actually my preference.

Globe Blotter

Ok, was lowkey not excited for this because I really wanted you to react to Agatha, but this is fire! Also, I have the perfect book for you - The End Crowns All by Bea Fitzgerald!! Its a sapphic love story (Cassandra and Helen) set during the Trojan war and one of the characters is on the ace spectrum! Its perfect (just mind the TWs).

Angela

My favorite in this saga switches between Just a Man and Open Arms. Like others have said, Jorge voices Odysseus and also wrote the whole musical! His voice is great, and if you're a fan of motifs this will be a good one for you too lol. Super excited to see what you think of the rest of the musical!

DameBerch

I love all the reactors finding this amazing musical.

NamelessSoul

I am SO into this. My favorite for this Saga at least is either Just a Man or Full Speed Ahead. Can't wait to watch the rest! Edit: im knocking Full Speed Ahead down and replacing it with Warrior of The Mind, the more I listen the more obsessed I am ,XD

Fobbles

The journey begins…

Zora Brightwood

My favorite song is probably open arms I just vibe with it.

FernAndGames

Resubscribed specifically for this! Like, I was already considering it but then I saw that you'd started Epic & the decision was made for me lmao. This musical is such a wild ride from start to finish, can't wait!! 🫶

Mel

Love that you reacted to this musical!!! My favourite is "Warrior of the Mind"

Jadyn P

Did I come back to watch these again just because they're hitting YouTube now? Yes. Yes I did. 😂

spicydrumstix

You watching these motivated me to join your patreon so i can watch the unedited videos. <3
